MarketDefinition/Description
Integratedsystemsarecombinationsofserver,storageandnetworkinfrastructure,soldwith
managementsoftwarethatfacilitatestheprovisioningandmanagementofthecombinedunit.The
marketforintegratedsystemscanbedividedintothreebroadcategoriesofintegratedsystems,someof
whichoverlap.Thesecategoriesare:
Integratedstacksystem(ISS)Server,storageandnetworkhardwareintegratedwith
applicationsoftwaretoprovideapplianceorappliancelikefunctionality.ExamplesincludeIBM
PureApplicationSystem,OracleExadataDatabaseMachineandTeradata.Notethatthisresearch

rackbasedsolutionsaswell.

throughthelifeofthesystem.ThemajorityofIISandISSsolutionsarereallyeffectivepackagingof
server,storageandnetworkingcomponentsthataresoldasseparateproductsintheirownright,while
HCISsolutionsarepurposedesignedandbuilttoformpartofanintegratedsystem.Whiletheindividual
buildingblocksofbothHCISsolutionsandIIS/ISSsolutionsmaybeassmallasasinglesocketrack
optimizednodeorbladeserver,itiscommonforIIS/ISSsolutionstoscaletodozensevenhundreds
ofnodes.HCISsolutionsofferbroadscalingintheory,butareusuallylimitedtosmallerconfigurations.

somesupportforreducedinstructionsetcomputer(RISC)variantslikePowerandSPARC,andthe
emergingmarketforARMandIntelAtomprocessorswillhaveapplicabilityforsomeintegratedsystem
usecases.

InDecemberof2014,EMCacquired90%ownershipofVCE.Ciscoowns10%withlongtermagreements
withVCEregardingengineering,customersupportandresellers.VCEisnowamemberoftheEMC
Federation.AsaresultoftheownershipchangewenolongerassessVCEindependentlyofEMC,andthis
year'sreferencetothevendorasEMC(VCE)reflectsthetransitioninprogress.Withitsmajority
ownershipofVCE,EMChasbecomeaformidablesourceofintegratedsystems,providingcombinedEMC

VCEengineeringdesigns.EMChaskeptVCE'sorganizationintactincludingengineering,sales,support

hascreatedgrowingconfusionoveritscompanystrategyandcommitment.In2014,Fujitsusimplifiedits
