TRANSFORMER PROTECTION PD300

INTRODUCTION

PD 300 MODELS

PD300 units are digital based protection relays that incorporate simultaneously in a single unit a great number of protection functions to create a solution adapted to any users
need.

There are two different models of PD300:

2 Model: Two winding transformer protection
PD300-2
3 Model: Two or three winding transformer
PD300-3
protection

Apart from the protection functions, they incorporate a wide

range of optional characteristics as listed below:
Automatisms
Measurements
Communications
Oscillography
Events
Fault records

MECHANICAL CONSTRUCTIONS
The units are available in the following mechanical constructions:
PD 300 Horizontal case

PD300 unit incorporates a frontal communication port and

up to two rear communication port, that allow:
To link the units to a Protection and Control Integrated
System, by means of various communication protocols.
To access the status, historical data, and settings information locally and/or remotely through telephone communication.

APPLICATION

PD 300 Vertical case

PD300 differential protections are used as the main protection and control units for two and three winding power
transformers, for both internal faults and faults in the influence area of current transformers.
PD300 units require no intermediate transformers to adjust
connection set ratio, as these adjustments are made by the
relay itself. Moreover, it has homopolar filter.

PD300 Integrated in TCP

Includes the same protection functions as PD300 and additionally incorporates enhanced control and local automation
functions of TCP units (see TCP catalogue).

2)

Three-phase differential protection

Digital correction of vector group and ratio
Homopolar component filter: Enables homopolar component to be removed from phase currents.
Instantaneous trip via adjustable differential current
2nd and 5th harmonic restraint, adjustable

This unit is used when a transformer winding is earthed. It

compares residual neutral current with current through the
grounding transformer. If the difference is greater than the
programmed threshold level (once the relevant transformation ratios are applied) a trip signal is given. It takes into
account the direction to allow a trip.

The differential unit operation characteristic is the following

one:

Phase overcurrent (3x50/51)

This unit gives backup protection for transformer external
faults. If these external faults are not cleared by the primary
protections, this overcurrent unit will actuate, otherwise the
transformer will be seriously damaged due to overloads.
Each winding features two instantaneous levels and one
time delay.
Ground overcurrent (50G/51G) (Only PD300-2
2)
This unit gives backup protection for transformer external
faults. If these external faults are not cleared by the primary
protections, this overcurrent unit will actuate, otherwise the
transformer will be seriously damaged due to overloads.
Each winding features two instantaneous levels and one
time delay.
Ground overcurrent (50G/51G) (Only PD300-2
2)

Different differential percentage characteristics are available,

depending on "Idifferential" and "Ires" settings.

This is an overcurrent function used on the current measured at the grounding of a power transformer, being its function to detect faults to earth. Each unit features two instantaneous levels and one time delay. It can be used as tank
protection.
Neutral overcurrent (50N/51N)
This is an overcurrent function applied to the vectorial sum
of phase currents, being its function to detect faults to
earth. Each winding features two instantaneous levels and
one time delay.
Current unbalance (46)
This function protects the installation against current unbalances resulting from anomalies in the power system or
unbalanced loads.
Thermal Image (49)
The thermal image unit protects the transformer against
damage resulting from heating up during overloads. This
unit is based on the calculation of winding temperature via
thermal image.

Breaker failure protection (50BF)

Overexcitation protection (24) (Only PD300-2

2)

It verifies the breaker correct actuation clearing a fault, causing, otherwise, the trip of the necessary breakers to clear
that fault

The overexcitation unit prevents transformers from working

at a greater flow density than that for which they were
designed. Avoiding heatings and consequent damage in
the transformer due to overexcitation.

Frequency protection (81O/U) (Only PD300-2

2)
PD300-2 units features 5 frequency steps that may be independently set as maximum frequency or minimum frecuency units, allowing load shedding.

PD300-2 units has two overexcitation units, based on different overexcitation detection methods:
V/Hz ( two independent levels)
5th harmonic

Overvoltage protection (59) (Only PD300-2

2)

PD300-3 incorporates a 5th harmonic overexcitation unit.

This unit protects transformers against overvoltages, giving

a trip command when the voltage exceeds a set level for a
set time.

AUTOMATISMS
Programmable logic

Lockout relay (86)

The user can configure up to 10 logic signals, that can be

assigned to output relays, LEDs, or inputs for protection
functions blocking features.

Relays programme with this function will act when the differential unit acts (instantaneous or percentage type) so that
they can be used as a locking device for breaker close circuits.
Protection function locking
Each protection function may be locked via a digital input or
a logic function.

MONITORING FUNCTIONS
Breaker monitoring
Breaker supervision by winding, generating stadistics of:
Breaker actuation
SkI2 cut
Generates an event and sends a signal to the control unit
when:
The SkI2 counter, after a trip, exceeds the threshold set.
The trips exceed a preset number in a set time.
Trip and close circuit supervision (74/C/CC)
Detects any anomalies in the circuit with the switch open or
close.
