A MAN who hid his castle-home for four
years is now being ordered to demolish
the structure.
Robert Fidler, a farmer from Surrey,
constructed the mock-Tudor property
without planning permission and put up
bales and a tarpaulin to hide it. He hoped
to take advantage of a law stating that if
there are no objections to a building within
four years, the owner can keep it.
The 61-year-old completed the house,
which cost £50,000 and features cannons
and battlements, in June 2002 and he and
his family moved in.
Fidler, his wife Linda, 40, and their
nine-year-old son Harry lived there for four
years before removing the bales, thinking
they were immune from prosecution. But
in 2007 Reigate and Banstead Borough
islands are considered part of the British
Overseas Territories.
Full diplomatic relations were restored
in 1990 and both sides have since largely

Pancake Day Falls Flat In
Modern-Day Britain
SHROVE Tuesday or Pancake Day, February
16, passed without much recognition here in
the new world, and sadly, for most Britons
back home this traditional precursor of Lent
has lost much of its former excitement. A
more religious Britain that celebrated 40
days of Lent, used the sugar, fat and honey
to make pancakes as the last sweetener
before the days of denial and to rid the larder
of any temptations. Today, the High Streets
boast branches of IHOP, while grocery store
mixes are easily available. Pancakes are
not the yearly culinary delight anymore and
the occasion has lost much of its former
significance.
It’s not completely uncelebrated however,
and pancake races do occur in the smaller
communities where women running with a
frying pan and tossing pancakes in to the air,
endeavor to cross the finishing line first. Brit-
ain’s most famous pancake race is at Olney,
Buckinghamshire, which reputedly started
this tradition back in 1445. Another famous
pancake race is run at North Somercotes,
Lincolnshire. The pancake races bring out
the crowds, where contributions raise money
for local charities.
Shackleton’s Scotch Supply
Salvaged From Antarctic Ice
THE JANUARY story in Today’s Britain,
about the scotch whiskey beneath the icy
Antarctic wastes that had been left by Sir
Ernest Shackleton’s 1907-9 expedition
came to fruition last month, when the New
Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust removed the
frozen booze from its 100-year-old icy burial.
They had expected to find only two crates of
the MacKinlay brand, but there were three,
while an unexpected surprise revealed two
crates of Brandy. Some of the bottles had
broken and the nearby ice was permeated
with the smell of whiskey, but Al Fastier of
the NZHT reckons that the majority of the
bottles are intact.
It’s good news for master blender Rich-
ard Paterson of Distillers Whyte & Mackay,
(the company that took over Mackinlay)

Owner Nan, Passes On

BRITAIN’S oldest fish and chip shop owner
died last month. Constance (Nan) Brown of
Pembroke, Wales, was still serving behind
the chip shop she and her husband opened in
1928. At that time cod and chips, plus a cup
of tea and a round of bread and butter cost
just sixpence. She was 102-years-old.
The Anstruther Fish Bar in Fife, Scotland,
was named the best Chippy in Britain after
winning the 22nd National Fish and Chip Shop
of the Year competition, sponsored by the
Sea Fish Organization. Robert and Alison
Smith took over the business in 2003, and
have won Scotland’s top fish shop award
four times. “This is the Oscars of our indus-
try,” said a very proud Robert Smith.
Britain’s first fish and chip shop opened
in London around 1870, and by 1927, there
were some 35,000 chippies nationwide.
Today, there are some 11,500 shops, but
chippies still outnumber MacDonald outlets
eight to one.
Drink Driving Offender Had
Supped 15 Pints Of Lager
A 29-YEAR-OLD Coventry motorist, recently
pulled over for drunken driving recorded one
of the highest breathlyser readings in the UK.
Marcin Ziebacz admitted to drinking fifteen
pints of strong lager, and was monitored with
a reading of 191 micrograms of alcohol per
100mls of his breath. He was six times over
the limit. His license was taken from him and
he was jailed for four months, and referred to
a drink-driver rehabilitation course.
The record for the worst drinking and
driving violation goes to Peter Banks,44,
of East Grinstead, Sussex, whose record
of 210 milligrams of alcohol per 100mls of
breath put him top of the list at an breathlyser
in 2008.
Six times over the limit, he was banned
for five years and sentenced to four months
jail time.

A POSH restaurant in Britwell Salome, Ox-
fordshire, which was recently awarded a Mi-
chelin star for a gourmet menu that included
French style scallops, veal sweetbreads, and
muntjac deer with lobster amongst other
delicacies, is in turmoil after the whole staff
quit. The owner of the Goose, a Mr Castle,
loved his Michelin star, but wanted more
business coming through the door. He told
head chef Ryan Simpson, he wanted some
regular pub fare on the menu like burgers
and chips.
The head-chef was absolutely flabber-
gasted that the Goose could be turned in to
a gastro-pub, and when the owner insisted,
Ryan Simpson and four staff resigned en-
masse forcing the restaurant to close.
“He wants to change it to a pub and serve
burgers and chips,” said the thoroughly
disgusted head-chef.
The owner remains unrepentant however,
and has scheduled a re-opening this month
with a new chef and new staff, accompanied
by a menu that which will include burgers.

nightmare where he defended his family
and he was exonerated on all charges. It
had taken nine months to reach court. The
family were utterly relieved and delighted
that the case had finally been decided and
said it had lifted a shadow from their lives.

Fullard’s unusual but successful defence of
his family.
“You cannot stand around and do nothing
when someone comes to your house and
starts threatening your family,” affirmed the
father of two, who was most irate that the
two young men had previous convictions but
were not given jail time.

TWO BRIDES scheduled within an hour of
each other at the Bickley Manor Hotel in
Bromley, Kent, needed a sense of humour
when both women turned up wearing the
exact same wedding dress. The civil-registry
service brought Emma Johal, 31, ahead of
Lisa Goodhew, 26, but while her party was
taking photographs, members of Lisa’s wed-
ding who were assembling for her nuptials
noticed the similarity. The two women saw
the coincidence without animosity however,
and both were later photographed smiling
together in their identical, white full-length
strapless garments. It later turned out that
both women had used the same shop, the
Bride & Groom, to purchase their gowns and
both wore head-veils. They had also used the
same local restaurant for their hen parties.

Blair Fights For His Legacy As He Defends Iraq War

HE WAS RIGHT and he’d do it again.
That was Tony Blair’s message last
month as he fought for his place in history
against critics who contend it was folly
to join the Americans in invading Iraq
based on intelligence that was faulty and
weapons of mass destruction that turned
out not to exist.
The highly anticipated testimony before
an official inquiry into Britain’s role in the
Iraq conflict provided both a reprise and a
coda to the Blair years: The former prime
minister showed his impressive rhetorical
skills and high-minded principles, but left
unanswered whether the war that defines
his mixed legacy was justified.
Many in the audience, including the
relatives of soldiers and civilians killed in
the war, were not impressed. Blair’s claim
to have no regrets drew an angry outburst.
As he left, one man stood up and shouted
“You are a liar!” A second added: “And
a murderer.”
The six-hour session capped a wide-
ranging inquiry that since November has
heard extensive evidence from government
lawyers and ministers who raised doubts
about the legality and wisdom of the
2003 Iraq invasion, which was extremely
unpopular in Britain.
The Iraq Inquiry panel plans to issue
a report next year, but does not have a
mandate to apportion blame or the power
to bring any criminal charges.
Many Britons blamed Blair for blindly
following the Americans – he was dubbed
“Bush’s poodle” and accused of making a
backroom deal with the US president.
But while Blair showed signs of nerves
during testimony – even nibbling on the
wings of his spectacles at one point –
he was unrepentant as he defended the
decision to topple Saddam Hussein and
warned that today’s leaders face similar
tough choices as they confront Iran over
its nuclear program.
TV Presenter Gosling Confesses To Killing Lover
VETERAN TV presenter Ray Gosling has
been arrested on suspicion of murder by
Nottinghamshire Police after he admitted
on a television show to killing his lover.
The 70-year-old’s confession that he
had smothered the unnamed man who was
dying of Aids was broadcast on the BBC’s
Inside Out programme last month.
The Nottingham filmmaker said he had
made a pact with his lover to act if his suf-
fering increased.
Police questioned the presenter over
his claims. A police spokesman said: “A
70-year-old Nottingham man was arrested
earlier on suspicion of murder following
comments made on the BBC’s Inside Out
programme on Monday evening.”

In the BBC East Midlands programme,
he told how he smothered the man with a
pillow while he was in hospital after doc-
tors told him that there was nothing further
that could be done for him.

changed everything, showing that religious
fanatics were determined to inflict mass
casualties. That made it too dangerous to
leave Saddam in power, he said, because
Saddam’s Iraq – or other rogue states, like
North Korea or Iran – could form links to
terror groups and attack the West.
Blair conceded there were no known
ties between Saddam and the al-Qaida
architects of the 9/11 atrocities, but said he
feared such links could have developed if
Saddam and his sons remained in power.
Blair also insisted the US-led invasion
would have been called off had Saddam
changed course and proved to UN inspec-
tors that he had destroyed his arsenal.
That was met with a rebuff by one panel
member, renowned historian Sir Lawrence
earlier.

was flawed. He said his government did not
anticipate the role al-Qaida and Iran would

The mood in the hearing room was
strained. The audience included many

them away from the building.
It was an uncomfortable return to the lime-
light for the once popular Blair, who swept
to power with a landslide victory in 1997 but

Civilian Force For
Trouble Spots
GORDON BROWN says a new
1,000-strong pool of civilian specialists
will provide expert help to failing states
and countries that have suffered conflict
or natural disasters.
Brown said last month that Britain’s
civilian stabilization group is now estab-
lished – almost two years after he first
announced plans to create the group.
Members include economists, gover-
nance experts, lawyers and police train-
ers. They will work alongside military
and humanitarian experts.
Brown says the new force will be able
to deploy in 24 hours, and bolster work
in places including Afghanistan, Iraq
and Sudan.
He confirmed civilian experts are
traveling to Haiti to help rebuild prisons
and assist the World Bank in identifying
priority projects.

Tis the Season…H-1B Cap Season That Is
WHILE IT isn’t as anticipated as Christmas,
many people look to April as the time of giv-
ing, when the H-1B cap season begins. Like
accountants, immigration attorneys have a
busy season that starts in March and ends
in April. While accountants hunker down with
their calculators and review the tax codes to
find deductions for their clients, immigration
lawyers work fastidiously to file H-1B cases
on behalf of their clients with the US Citizen-
ship and Immigration Services (USCIS) by
April 1, with the hope that USCIS will grant
these cases. April Fools Day has become
known as H-1B Cap Day for immigration
practitioners and employers around the
country who need the skill sets of certain
professional level foreign nationals.
An employer that seeks to employ a
foreign national has limited options. The
H-1B visa program is a nonimmigrant visa
category available to companies to sponsor
professionals that will be employed in a
specialty occupation. A specialty occupation
is one in which the position requires the theo-
retical and practical application of knowledge
normally gained through a bachelors degree
program.
The USCIS permits H-1B visa cases to
be filed six months before the US fiscal year
starts on October 1. As a result, thousands
of H-1B cases are filed with USCIS on April
1, or “H-1B Cap Day”. USCIS estimates that
in 2007 and 2008 it received over 150,000
H-1B cases in the first week of April. An
unintentional result of this rule that permits
cases to be filed six months before the start
of the fiscal year is that USCIS has held a lot-
tery to decide which cases will be considered
but the conservative advice is to file cases
on April 1 to ensure that the case will have
an opportunity to be considered in another
H-1B lottery in the event there is one. As a
result, it is important for employers who have
identified H-1B candidates either from their
existing work force (perhaps in another visa
category where there is a strategic reason
to change visa categories to H-1B) or new
candidates, to initiate an H-1B cap case as
early as possible so that it can be prepared
and filed to USCIS by April 1. If H-1B cap case
filings do not reach the annual quota in April,
USCIS will continue to permit case filings until
the H-1B Cap is reached. It is unknown if this
will be in April or extended to December as
it was in 2009. It’s best to be proactive and
initiate any H-1B cases so that they can be
filed to USCIS as quickly as possible. A com-
mon population for employers to consider are
foreign students that are graduating or who
may have already graduated and are working
pursuant to Optional Practical Training may

Not all H-1B application are subject to the
annual cap. A person is no longer subject to
the H-1B cap once he or she is the recipient of
an H-1B case approval perhaps with another
employer. Additionally, there are many people
that have H-1B status with educational insti-
tutions or non-profit research organizations
that are exempt from the H-1B cap rules.
Such individuals may become subject to the
H-1B cap in the future if they were to seek
employment with a company that is subject
to the regular H-1B cap rules.

A COMMITMENT has been asked by
a cross-party parliamentary group to

70 million. The group hopes to include
this call in their manifesto for this year’s
general election.
The Cross-Party Group on Balanced
Migration said that political commit-
ment to reduce net immigration to the
levels of the early 1990s – around 40,000,
compared to 163,000 in 2008 – was the
first step towards avoiding reaching the
70 million figure by 2029.
The group’s Declaration on Popula-
tion, entitled “70 million is too many”
was signed by 19 parliamentarians,
including former Archbishop of Can-
terbury Lord Carey, former Commons
Speaker Baroness Boothroyd, five La-
bour MPs and peers, 10 Conservatives
and two crossbenchers.
The declaration warned that the
current scale of immigration is “unprec-
edented” and said that failure to stem
it “would be seriously damaging to the
future harmony of our society”.
ACCUSED
It accused the major political par-
ties of failing to address intense public
concern over the issue, and warned that
their silence has provided an opportu-
nity for the far-right British National
Party.

DECLARATION
The declaration noted official projec-

migration on such a scale “will have a
significant impact on our public services,
our quality of life and on the nature of
our society”.
The signatories acknowledged that
returning to immigration levels of two
decades ago “will not be easy to achieve”
and could take several years.
But they argued: “The first require-
ment is a clear political decision to put
in hand the measures required to restore
control over our borders, to break the
present almost automatic link between
coming to Britain and later gaining
citizenship, and thus take a range of
further measures to limit the growth in
our population.”
DEMOCRATIC Unionist Party leader
Peter Robinson says he has resumed his
duties as leader of Northern Ireland’s pow-
er-sharing government after a state lawyer
cleared him of any ethical wrongdoing.
Robinson temporarily stepped aside last
month as Northern Ireland’s first minister
after a BBC documentary accused him of
failing to report his wife’s questionable
financial dealings to parliamentary watch-
dogs. His wife admitted having an affair
with a teenager and funneling £50,000
from businessmen to him. Peter Robinson
was accused of playing a role in returning
money to the businessmen.
Robinson announced last month that an
investigating lawyer found “no breaches
whatsoever” of Robinson’s code of
conduct, pledge of office or other ethics
rules.

Confirmed As UK’s
Youngest WWII Death
A 14-YEAR-OLD who died at sea in 1941
has been confirmed as Britain’s youngest
World War II casualty.
Officials say Reginald Earnshaw was
killed under enemy attack aboard the SS
North Devon. He had lied about his age in
order to join the Merchant Navy.
The Commonwealth War Graves Com-
mission confirmed that Earnshaw was the
youngest service member to be killed dur-
ing the war. His sister placed flowers at his
grave last month to mark his birthday.
His remains were buried in an unmarked
grave in Edinburgh, Scotland, for decades
until a fellow shipmate launched an inves-
tigation that led to him being identified and
given a headstone.

without review. The reason for this lottery
system is that the law prescribes a numerical
limitation to the H-1B visa program each year.
This quota limitation is commonly referred to
as the H-1B Cap. The law provides for a total
of 85,000 H-1B visa applications per US Fis-
cal Year. This number is deceiving though, as
20,000 of the H-1B numbers are specifically
reserved for individuals that have obtained
advanced degrees from US universities. Of
the remaining 65,000 another 6,800 are
supposed to be made available to citizens
of Singapore and Chile based on free trade
treaties with those two countries. In the event
that the H-1B quota has been reached, USCIS
established an H-1B lottery to fairly decide
which cases would be reviewed of the ones
filed on the day the cap was reached.
It was widely reported in 2009 that the
H-1B cap was not exhausted until close to
the end of December. This was the first year
in many that the H-1B quota was not quickly
reached by employers in need of university
educated, specialty workers to fill critical
professional level positions within their
companies. It is unknown if there has been a
continued build up of cases to be filed in April,

UK Auditor: 392 Lawmakers Profiling For Airline

MORE THAN half the lawmakers in
Britain’s House of Commons made exces-
sive or bogus expense claims, an auditor
reported last month after investigating a
scandal that tarnished British politics.
Thomas Legg, appointed after legisla-
tors’ leaked claims caused an uproar, said
392 of the 752 current and former House
of Commons legislators have been asked
to repay funds, including Prime Minister
Gordon Brown. The total to be repaid is
£1.12m.
He said a “culture of deference” and a
“prevailing lack of transparency” created
the scandal, because officials in Parliament
whose job it was to check expense claims
were too timid to overrule lawmakers’
wild demands.
Procedures that allowed lawmakers
to fund expensive second homes were
“deeply flawed – in particular, the rules
were vague,” Legg said, adding there was
a “widespread lack of proper evidence” to
support the lawmakers’ claims.
EXPOSURE
The exposure of lawmakers’ expense
claims showed how legislators manipu-
lated housing rules for profit and attempted
to bill the public for items including porn
movies, horse manure and an ornamental
duck house. One legislator demanded
reimbursement for cleaning the moat sur-
rounding his country mansion.
The scandal – which touched every
political party – provoked deep anger in
Britain, coming as voters struggled with
a daunting recession and rising unem-
ployment. Brown saw nine ministers quit
and suffered heavy losses in local and
European elections as voters deserted
mainstream parties.
Two legislators have been ousted over
their claims and about 150 others are not
running in the next national election –
which must be held by June – as a result
of the furor.
DISCLOSED
Details were disclosed only after a five-
year freedom of information campaign and
repeated attempts by Parliament to use
British courts to block their release.
Legg initially ordered lawmakers to
pay back a total of £1.3m, but the amount
was reduced to £1.12m following suc-
cessful appeals by 44 lawmakers. Brown
was ordered to repay £13,000, mostly in
excessive claims for a maid.
His report showed that Barbara Follett, a
lawmaker with the governing Labour Party
and wife of novelist Ken Follett, repaid the
highest amount of any legislator – £42,458
wrongly claimed for security patrols,
CCTV monitors and a burglar alarm.
Nick Clegg, leader of the opposition
Liberal Democrat party, said Legg’s report
should mark the end of “the rotten system
of expenses we had in the past.”
An independent body is drafting new
rules to govern expense claims. Details
already announced include a ban on leg-
islators using taxpayers’ money to employ
family members as staff.
CHARGES
Meanwhile, it was announced four Brit-
ish lawmakers will face criminal charges
and the prospect of jail for alleged shady
accounting practices during Britain’s ex-
pense claims scandal, the country’s chief
prosecutor said last month.
Keir Starmer, Britain’s director of
public prosecution, said three members of
the House of Commons and one member
of the House of Lords had been charged
with false accounting offenses.
Investigations into six cases followed
the exposure last year of the misuse of
claims by hundreds of British lawmakers,
who used taxpayers’ money to fund ex-
penses on everything from swank second
homes to horse manure, porn movies and
a mole catcher.
Starmer said three Labour Party law-
makers in the House of Commons – Elliot
Morley, David Chaytor and Jim Devine
– and a Conservative Party member in the
House of Lords – Paul White, known as
Lord Hanningfield, had been charged.

At the reception Sir George gave us a brief
account of how it all came about and how he
first started working at Abbey Road Studios
making £7 a week. (He’s lucky. I made all of
five quid working for Liberty of London and
45 shillings and six pence went on accom-
modation). Sir George really liked music as
he started playing at age five, playing by ear.
It wasn’t until he was in his early twenties that
he first took lessons.
Martin’s credits are very diverse, and
so much more than the Beatles producer.
His accomplishments: conductor, writer,
composer, working with legendary artists
which include jazz band leader Humphrey
Lyttleton, comics Peter Sellers, and Mi-
chael Bentine, singer Ella Fitzgerald, rock
acts Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas, Peter
Gabriel and Celine Dion.
A really fascinating man, I’d first met Sir
George when he received recognition by the
Grammy Foundation of America at a two
day event at USC in LA July 2008, when it
seemed like the whole world turned out to
honor and pay tribute to him, recognizing him
as probably the greatest producer of the last
century. Many of the top artists in the music
world each went on stage and performed
one of his songs (I’d never seen that kind of
“love”) or that many ‘stars’ in one place. See
our column August 2008. The next night he
took us back in time through film, video and
narration for an evening I will never forget. It
was like living my youth all over again.
As guest of Brooks Firestone and his
English wife Kate, they were able to put this
special occasion together. Whether it is the
magic of Sir George or the effect he has on
everyone around him, the following night
was another unforgettable evening, this time
at the Granada!!
The Granada is a masterpiece theatre.
Originally built in 1924 and destroyed by
earthquake in 1925, The Santa Barbara
Center for the Performing Arts took over the
property in 1983, raised $60m, and spent
four years rebuilding the eight storied building
to its present grandeur with a state of the art
theatre. They’ve really out done themselves.
The quality of shows they produce is a tribute
to their efforts.

Murder and Mayhem: It’s just another
month in Albert Square
ARCHIE’S evil plans have finally been re-
vealed: He wants The Vic. But he doesn’t
just want The Vic the way Scarlet O’Hara
wants Tara; he wants to cheat Peggy out of
it and leave her with nothing. His plan: To
get Sam to skip town so that Peggy loses
all the bail money she put up to keep her out
of jail. He enlists Janine, to befriend Sam,
but Janine has her own plans; she wants to
help Archie get The Vic but then cheat him
out of it, keeping it for herself (and she’ll do
anything to get it – even sleeping with crinkly
old men). He also enlists Jack to sleep with
Sam and convince her to go, but Jack doesn’t
have the heart to do it . . . Archie then tries to
burn down The Vic and frame Billy (on a night
when he thinks everyone is out), but stops
and douses the fire when he hears Peggy. He
claims he was walking by, saw the fire and
saved the day. But Peggy is suspicious. She
knows he set the fire. So she punishes him
by sleeping with him.
And by the way, not for nothing but Sam is
supposed to be engaged to Ricky, but starts
sleeping around with Jack within a week of
getting the ring. It’s clear: Ricky is head over
heels for Sam, but for Sam, Ricky is just OK
for now (while across the Square, Bianca is
pining away for him).
Bradley announces that he’s about to start
a new life in Canada and Stacey pretends she
doesn’t care. Stacey has taken to hiding her
medications instead of taking them, leading
her to descend into a manic storm. Her be-
havior has become so publicly erratic though,
that when she says that Archie attacked her,
at Bradley’s leaving do, no one believes her.
They just think it’s the crazy talking. But he
apparently did rape her in the Launderette.
And her mum Jean finally realizes that she
needs professional help and so the doctor
arranges to have her committed. But Walford
style, that commitment happens publicly, in
the Square, as she is trying to get to Bradley
to say goodbye.
Christian and Sayed are hot and heavy,
and also busted: Someone spots them and
starts sending anonymous letters threaten-
ing exposure and demanding money. Turns
out it was Lucy Beale and their secret is still
safe. For now.
Elsewhere, Jane wants a baby and Ian
refuses so Jane walks out . . . Ronnie also
wants a baby and has resorted to sleeping
with random men to get one . . . And speak-
ing of babies, Heather has hers, naming
him George Michael, and we finally find out
who the daddy is: Darren. Yes, THAT Darren
(who is newly engaged to Libby). Turned
out it all happened last Valentine’s Day Eve
when he was comforting her. They both
want to keep it a secret and you know what
that means: Everyone will soon find out and
in a big way.

THIS MONTH Gail Platt hit at the altar for her
fifth marriage to her fourth husband (she
married Brian Tilsley twice in a fit of optimism
over experience). Tearful dad Ted tells Gail
how pleased he is for the opportunity to give
her away on her big day. Well, he did miss the
first four times. With Gail dolled up in a lace
frock with a high neck she exchanges oaths
at the church with Joe. “Repeat after me…”
the registrar says although Gail should surely
know the words by now. The reception’s held
at the Rovers, with Twiglets and Cava keeping
the small amount of people who are there
quite happy while an appropriate tune plays
on the jukebox – it’s Madness. Gail’s son Nick
eyes up Joe’s daughter Tina who pretends not
to notice. As they settle into married life, Gail
tries out her new name, writing her signature
over and over, well after five weddings she
probably has problems remembering what
surname she’s got. But Gail’s new husband
has a secret. He’s desperate over mounting
debts and eyes up the collection box in the
Rovers the girls have started for Sally’s
cancer charity. Bill gives him what-for when
he spots Joe lusting after the loot.
Meanwhile, Peter Barlow’s plans to open
a new bar to rival the Rovers Return forge
ahead when he’s given the all-clear from the
Council – with a little help from his dad-in-law
George. George is the sort of fella who’s in the
funny handshake brigade and he’ll have met
Ban Asked On Paper Lanterns, Help Protect Cows
LEGISLATORS are calling on Britain’s
government to ban Chinese paper lanterns,
because of a risk to cows, sheep and other
livestock.
Some members of the House of Lords
called for a ban last month, following
concerns expressed by Britain’s National
Farmers’ Union.

contain a candle and are made of paper
and a wire frame, are often released into
someone from

Tyrone’s first wed-
ding anniversary
and Molly goes
through the motions of playing the dutiful

there’s someone else involved. Tyrone tries
to woo his wife back by bursting into the
shop when she’s dusting the tinned puds but
she blanks him by the cheese and he leaves,
forlorn. Molly’s Aunty Pam is furious with Mol
and says she might as well have stamped
on a kitten when she dumped Tyrone. Jack
Duckworth’s straight round there once he
hears the sad news and over a few beers in
the Rovers, and well-meaning words from Fiz
and John, Tyrone’s heart bleeds over losing
his wife. Jack coos pigeon-speak to Tyrone:
“Lost birds allus come back.”
Up and down the Street, the sad news
breaks about Sally Webster’s breast cancer.
She has her lumpectomy in hospital and it’s
good news, she’s given the all-clear as the
cancer hasn’t spread but she’ll still need
radiotherapy, just in case. It’s champagne
all round in the Webster house as they toast
Sally’s health but Kevin loses control when
Sophie tells him she prayed for her mum.
Kev wants to know what use prayer will do
and loses his temper with his youngest. He
also comes close to hitting his eldest when
he finds out that Rosie’s selling her car to
pay for a boob job. Rosie’s on the phone to
the air to mark weddings, birthdays or
other celebrations.
Often the lanterns can drift for several
miles and land in rural fields.
Baroness Janet Fookes says the pretty
decorations pose a danger to animals.
Cattle have eaten the wire frames and
died as a result.
Rural affairs minister Bryan Davies
urged manufacturers to make the lanterns
biodegradable.

Elsewhere, the opening bars of Sheena
Easton’s hit ‘9-to-5’ ring out from the in-car
stereo as the wonderful Mary returns to the
Street. She invites Norris for dinner in her four
wheel drive but he turns her down, calling her
motorhome: “A venus fly tray with central
locking.” She’s matahari in an anorak, that
one, a femme fatale as styled by Marks and
Spencer.
It looks like things are perking up for Dev
as his ex-wife Sunita draws closer. It’s their
twins birthday and Dev hosts the party it in
his flat. Jesse provides the entertainment with
Sean finding his calling as the new Hiyalowa
to Jesse’s General Custard. Dev’s really
happy to be back in Sunita’s good books.
Not long now and he’ll be back under her
duvet too.
And over at the Rovers, barmaid Becky re-
ceives bad news when she finds out that her
mum has died, but she doesn’t tell anyone.
She’s still not speaking to hubby Steve who
wants to have a baby when she’s dead set
against it. So Becky’s imploding with grief
while Steve acts like he’s single again, buys
a motorbike and takes leggy Kelly Crabtree
for a spin around the block.

Corrie Gets A Royal
Visit From Camilla
PRINCE CHARLES’ wife turned bar-
maid during a visit to the set of a British
TV soap.
Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, got
behind the bar of the Rover’s Return, the
fictional pub on Coronation Street.
The duchess says she is a lifelong fan of
the show, set in the fictional working-class
community of Weatherfield.
Camilla visited the set in Manchester,
northwest England and watched the cast
film a scene from the long-running soap.
She said the show was “a wonderful
British institution.”
Last month’s royal visit marked the 50th
anniversary year of Coronation Street,
which began in 1960.
Camilla says she would like to appear
on the show. Her husband Charles, the heir
to the British throne, had a walk-on part
10 years ago.

A Moral Tale Of Our Times
I DISCOVERED last week that the captain
of England’s football team is John Terry.
I have to admit that it is more than a little
remiss of me not to have known that since
I gather that he must have been captain for
quite some time.
And now, of course, he is skipper no more.
He has been sacked by England’s football
supremo, Fabio Capello, a man incidentally
whose command of English is not quite what
you’d expect from a bloke earning £6m a year
running an English team. Apparently it took
Capello a mere 12 minutes to complete the
deed. Well, six minutes probably, to allow for
the interpretation.
So Terry has gone. His unpardonable
crime was to sleep with the partner of a
fellow-international, one Vanessa Perroncel.
The couple rather enthusiastically took their
relations a bit too far, leaving the fragrant
French underwear model in what is some-
times called an interesting state. In order to
cover his blushes and wreak less havoc on
the underwear model’s figure, the couple
arranged to terminate the pregnancy, leaving
both somewhat lighter, she on the scales, he
in the pocket.
ASSUME
Neither of the partners emerges with any
great credit from the affair. Terry seems to
assume that as England captain he has the
droit de seigneur as far as his team-mates
go. I should imagine that Fabio in his cracked
English managed to disabuse him of that
idea but frankly I really don’t know what an
England football captain is for.
As I write there are twelve Premiership
teams engaged in kicking lumps out of each
other and I haven’t the faintest notion of the
name of any of their captains.
England’s first football captain was
Charles W Alcock who arranged the first-ever
international, for England against Scotland in
1870. He was an old Harrovian, noted as a
centre-forward with an accurate shot. Ten
years later Alcock arranged the first-ever
cricket international between England and
Australia. Altogether a bit of a mover and
shaker, our CW, a bloke who got things
going. In his grave in the West Norwood
Highest Judo Ranking For Scottish Pensioner
GEORGE KERR became one of only
seven people alive to hold judo’s highest
rank last month.
Kerr, 72, was named a 10th Dan black
belt at a ceremony held by the International
Judo Federation in Paris. He is one of only
five non-Japanese recipients of the award,
which honours his contribution to the
sport, reported the BBC.
Kerr, who runs a judo club for 200
youngsters in Edinburgh, said he was
“humbled” by the award.
Fewer than 20 people have ever re-
ceived the honour, which recognises Kerr’s
contribution to the sport as a competitor,
coach, referee and administrator.
Kerr said: “I feel humbled and proud to
be the first Scotsman to receive this award.
I was slightly embarrassed because most of
the people that get this award are in their
80s while I am only 72 – and just a young
72 at that.”

SACKING
Given that arrang-
ing football matches
is no longer the pre-
serve of the England
captain, why was
sacking Terry such a big deal? The likelihood
of his being able to raise the World Cup into
the South African summer night sky seems
remote, so if having an adulterer captaining a
national side is an enormous national embar-
rassment, it seems an eventuality roughly on
a par with a Blackpool donkey being led into
the winner’s enclosure at Aintree.
Perhaps it was because he spent a great
deal of money getting a court injunction pre-
venting publication of the story in the News
of the Screws so that when the details finally
escaped it obviously had to be a big story.
On the other hand, Mlle Perroncel is not
entirely blameless in this matter. It may
be that she forgot she already had one
international footballer boyfriend when she
accompanied Terry in an act of pleasurable
mutual fulfilment. It may be that in the sheer
excitement of the moment she forgot too that
the key thing about being an underwear model
is keeping the silk on the body.
FLOUTING
Mind you, Terry is quite well-known for
his flouting of what is customarily accepted.
Back in March 2008, he indulged his passion
for fine food at a Pizza Express in Esher, Sur-
rey, treating his wife and twins to a two-hour
banquet at the said establishment, having
first carefully parked his Bentley in a disabled
drivers’ bay. It is quite reasonable to suppose
that he showed similar disdain for conven-
tion in completely undressing the underwear
model, so perhaps the girl should not be too
highly castigated.
At all events, the act (or acts) in which she
participated with the England captain led in
short order to an altogether natural conse-

All well and good, except that she has
now adopted a very strange course of action.
Seeking the privacy to which all right-minded
wealthy people are surely entitled, she
contacted the publicist, Max Clifford, who
appeared with her on television stressing (a)
her desire for a quiet life and (b) her distaste
of publicity.
UNFAMILIAR
For those of you unfamiliar with the name,
Max Clifford is the man who claims to have
discovered the Beatles and in a busy life
since then has also championed the privacy
of shrinking violets like Freddie Starr (he was
responsible for the Sun headline, ‘Freddie
Starr ate my hamster’), Mohammed Al-Fayed,
OJ Simpson (during his trial) and Jade Goody
(during her final illness).
The upshot of it all was that Fabio Capello
sacked John Terry, replacing him with a
different role model, Rio Ferdinand. He is
of course a far more impressive character.
Admittedly, he is as I write suspended for
foul play, elbowing a Hull City player in the
face. He has been England captain before,
back in March 2008, though this apparently
represented public forgiveness for having suf-
fered an eight-month suspension consequent
on failure to attend a drugs test in 2003.
All of which brings me to the concept of a
role model in modern Britain. My dictionary
defines the job as being someone whose
“character and behaviour are imitated by
others who would like to be in the same or
similar position or situation.”
That seems a fair enough description of
our nation’s morals.

Reader’s Digest UK In Administration
BRITAIN’S sector of Reader’s Digest,
famed for its magazine of the same
name, has gone into administration in
the UK, putting 117 jobs at risk.
The decision comes
after talks between
the company’s US
parent group and the
UK Pensions Regula-
tor broke down. The
dispute centred on
how to pay down a
£125m deficit in its
UK pension fund.
Administrators
said the magazine,
which was founded
in 1938 and has more
than 540,000 UK sub-
scribers, will continue
to trade while a buyer was sought.
Reader’s Digest had agreed a deal
with the Pension Protection Fund to
pay off a small part of the deficit, but
the regulator vetoed the agreement.
As a deal could not be done, the UK
publisher said it would not be able to
meet its pension obligations and so
could not sustain operations.
The UK edition of Reader’s Digest
was founded 16 years after the US
version. Published in 35 languages,
it is available in more than 100
Two Left Feet For Artifical Limb Patient
AN ELDERLY patient was fitted with
the wrong artificial limb by a prosthetics
expert who was struck off for his error
last month.
Patrick Morrison was looking forward
to walking properly again with a new
prosthetic foot after his right limb had to
be amputated. Morrison, 76, of Bathgate,
West Lothian, found himself leaning to
one side but thought it was part of the
breaking-in process.
So he was devastated when he discov-
ered that prosthetist Malcolm Griffiths had
given him a second left foot, reported the
Daily Mirror.
The grandfather only spotted the blun-
der five months on from the operation
when wife Alexia, 75, removed the fake
limb’s protective sock.
To make matters worse, the specialist
failed to notice the extraordinary gaffe
during two separate check-ups – or that he
had given him a size eight instead of a size
nine. Morrison said: “Me and my wife got
a big surprise. You just don’t expect this
kind of thing to happen.”
The pensioner’s ordeal began when he
had to have his big toe amputated three
years ago. The wound became infected

THIS MONTH all you readers will be the ben-
eficiaries of my considerable expertise and
knowledge of motor car racing as I am going
to give you my prediction on who will win this
year’s Formula One championship. So read on
to find out who will be the 2010 F1 number one
and then proceed briskly down to your local
betting shop for a wager. I must warn you
though I have seldom got it right so don’t put
your shirt on it. For example, last year, never
in my wildest imagination could I see Jenson
Button winning the championship. After all, this
time last year Button wasn’t sure if he would be
competing at all, after Honda announced that
they were pulling out. Thanks to Ross Brawn
though the team survived and both Ross and
Jenson deserved their victory.
Is this the team to repeat their success?
It is now Mercedes GP Patronis Team and
Jenson Button and his team mate Rubens
Barrichello have been replaced by Michael
Schumacher and Nico Rosberg to make
Team Mercedes an all German affair. I write
all German, Mercedes certainly is and their
drivers certainly are but the car, the engine
and team are about as British as you can get
but don’t tell any Germans that.
In 1984 a couple of ex-Cosworth engineers
got together and started their own engine com-
pany, they were funded by Roger Penske who,
in turn, had the backing of General Motors. The
engineers were Swiss born Mario Illien and
British born Paul Morgan and following in the
footsteps of their former employers, Cosworth,
Mario and Paul merged their surnames to form
the Ilmor Engineering Co based in Brixworth,
Northamptonshire. Because of their financial
involvement both Roger Penske and the Chev-
rolet division of GM owned 25 percent each of
the company with the remaining shares split
between Illien and Morgan.
This Northamptonshire outfit initially sup-
plied Indy car engines to Team Penske and
the first Ilmor engine debuted in 1987 at the
Indianapolis 500 powering Al Unser’s car.
The engine was badged the Ilmor-Chevrolet
265A and a year later re-badged as the Chevy
Indy V8 when Rick Mears won the 1988 Indy
500 using it. From 1987 to 1991 this North-
hamptonshire made V8 engine went on to
win 64 out of 78 races in Indianapolis Cart
racing. In 1991 Ilmor took the ambitious step
and entered Formula One as the exclusive

Heroin In London May Cause Anthrax
BRITISH health authorities have
warned that contaminated heroin be-
ing sold in London may cause anthrax,
after one addict was hospitalized with
the potentially fatal disease.
The warning follows a similar out-
break in Scotland that has infected 19
heroin addicts since December, includ-
ing nine deaths. Authorities suspect the
heroin or an agent mixed with the drug
was likely contaminated.

LOTUS has unveiled its car for the 2010
season ahead of its return to Formula One
after 16 years.

“All heroin in London carries the
risk of anthrax contamination,” said
Brian McCloskey of London’s Health
Protection Agency.
Anthrax is a bacterial disease that can be
treated with antibiotics if caught early.
Heroin can easily become contami-
nated with anthrax spores while being
manufactured in poor countries in
Africa and Asia where the disease often
infects people.

Britain To Tighten Student
Visa Requirements
BRITAIN is tightening its rules on student
visas to prevent people from flouting the
rules and working illegally.
The changes – which are effective im-
mediately – won’t stop genuine students
from traveling to Britain to study but will
close an avenue that has been exploited,
Home Secretary Alan Johnson said last
month.
“There’s an awful lot more of adults,
not young people, not coming to study
degrees at universities but coming on short
courses into this country,” Johnson told
the BBC. Asked if many of those students
were “bogus,” Johnson said, “Yes, yes.”
Under the new rules, those from outside
the European Union who come to Britain
for short courses – less than six months
– can no longer bring their dependents.
Johnson said the number of hours foreign
students will be able to work will also
be cut from 20 hours a week to 10, and
that a higher standard of English will be
required.
Britain’s rules have been criticized for
being too lax and open to potential abuse
from economic migrants and people with
more dangerous intentions. Last year, a
Nigerian man accused of trying to destroy
a trans-Atlantic airliner in December had
his application for a student visa rejected
by the British government.
Johnson said genuine foreign students
– who make up about 30 percent of the
people coming into Britain – are still
welcome.
“(But) we will come down hard on those
that flout the rules,” Johnson said.
British Airways Suspends
15 For Online Comments
BRITAIN’S largest union says British
Airways PLC has suspended 15 cabin
crew members because they allegedly
posted inappropriate comments on their
Facebook pages.
The Unite union called the move unac-
ceptable.
Airline spokesman Euan Fordyce said
Thursday about a dozen cabin crew were
suspended while internal investigations
were being carried out.
Fordyce said there were a number of
reasons for the suspensions including inap-
propriate comments posted online. He gave
no details, saying only that the airline “will
not tolerate intimidation of our staff.”
British Airways is locked in a long-
standing dispute with cabin crew over
issues including wages, job security and
working conditions. Unite has called for
a strike vote by members.

Police Drone Arrest Deemed ‘Illegal’
AN ARREST of a teenager by police
has been ruled illegal due to the use
of a flying surveillance drone in the
tracking of the teen leading up to
the arrest.
The landmark arrest, by Mersey-
side Police, was hailed as a step
forward in policing history in a state-
ment released to the media last month.
But the force may have committed a
criminal offence since it did not have
permission from the Civil Aviation
Authority to fly its new Unmanned
Aerial Vehicle.
Officers used the UAV, which is
equipped with thermal imaging cam-
eras, to pursue two suspects travelling

Britannica has apologized to Ireland for a
past version of its concise edition that man-
gled the history of the Irish Civil War, but
says it corrected the mistake years ago.
Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc was on
the defensive when Irish students com-
plained last month that its concise elec-
tronic version wrongly says the war was
between the Catholic south and Protestant
north. Ireland recently agreed with the

Brown’s Tears Could Signal
Emotive UK Election

HIS VOICE strained and his eyes welling
with tears, Britain’s usually guarded Prime
Minister Gordon Brown showed rare
public emotion in a television interview
as he discussed the trauma of his newborn
daughter’s death in 2002.
Brown’s unrestrained display in a con-
versation with celebrity journalist Piers
Morgan, excerpts of which were broadcast
last month, comes ahead of a national elec-
tion that experts expect to focus on leaders’
private lives like never before.

Party has trailed in opinion polls for more
than two years to the main opposition
Conservatives, led by David Cameron, a
43-year-old ex-public relations executive
seemingly at ease with offering the public
glimpses of his family life.
“I could hold her hand and I could feel
that she knew I was there and there was
nothing that you could see that was actu-
ally wrong, but she just wasn’t growing,”
Brown said in the interview, referring
to his daughter Jennifer, who suffered a
brain hemorrhage and died 10 days after
her birth.

Brown’s wife Sarah, who watched from
the audience as the interview was taped
last month, also appeared emotional as he
described their grief and spoke of their son
Fraser’s cystic fibrosis.
Some analysts believe Brown’s in-
terview, which was broadcast in full the
following Sunday, was aimed at showing
a human side to the sometimes taciturn
former Treasury chief before he and the
amiable Cameron begin vying in the
campaign.
Britain’s national election must be held
by June 3.
“This is, in part, about making Gordon
a more likable person to the voters,” said
Ben Page, chief executive of polling group
Ipsos-MORI. “Voters see him as remote
and out of touch.”
Page said Brown’s unlikely show of
feelings would appear genuine to most
voters.
“He’s not sobbing into his handkerchief,
which would be regarded as cynical,” Page
said. “What they want from a politician is
authenticity – Brown seems to have man-
aged to display that.”

Cameron has published domestic video
clips from his home, including conversa-
tions with his young children as he washes
dinner plates, to burnish his image as an

haven’t served my children up for spreads
in the papers. And my answer is simple.
My children aren’t props, they’re people,”
Brown said in 2008.
Yet Brown later led the tributes in
Parliament when Cameron and his wife
Samantha’s severely disabled six-year-old
son Ivan died last February. Brown spoke
of the “unbearable sorrow” both families
had borne.
Cameron has spoken movingly about his
son in interviews, and credits his family’s
experience with British medical workers
for influencing his staunch defense of the
country’s health service – previously a
target of his party’s scorn
In the interview, Brown also described
his proposal to Sarah, discussed his love
life as a younger man and spoke in unusu-
ally frank terms about his clashes with his
predecessor, Tony Blair.

Brown confirmed he and Blair forged
a pact in 1994 that allowed Blair to run as
Labour Party leader unopposed by Brown
on the understanding he would step aside
for his colleague sometime in the future.
Blair quit 13 years later in 2007, under
pressure from a restless Brown.
“I don’t deny that, that there were fights
about different issues, but it’s always the
case,” Brown said in the interview with
Britain’s ITV channel.
Page said the broadcast sets the tone
for an unusually personal election cam-
paign – noting that in a previous Morgan
interview Liberal Democrat leader Nick
Clegg discussed the number of his sexual
partners.
“The two leaders of the main parties
have spoken openly about their children,
their private lives, even how they met their
wives – and the leader of the third party
has told us how many women he’s slept
with,” Page said. “Things are going to be
very different from elections in the 1980s
or 1990s.”

Village Terrorised By ‘Unpleasant’ Pheasant
RESIDENTS of a Yorkshire village are
being terrorised by a pheasant which has
been trapping people in their homes and
swooping down at them on the street.
Men, women, children, prams, bikes,
dogs and cars are said to have have
fallen foul of the bird in Newsham, near
Richmond.

St Patrick’s Day. And I find it hard to learn
that March 28 is supposed to be the start
of the British summer? Riiight, they’ve got
to be joking eh?!
I thought I would feature a lovely chicken
dish, so that if your Mum’s are here can
be prepared for her, for the UK Mum’s day
on the 14th. However it is a very flavourful
recipe, adapted from one in the BBC Good
Food magazine a while back, they suggest
flambéing the brandy in it, however I just stir

AS I write this, it’s early spring here in
Portland, with flowers abloom and abundant
sunshine. Ironically, while luxuriating in the
present, I have been reading books that
embrace the past.
In my quest to ex-
plore both technology
and books, and some-
times their combination, I
listened to Phillippa Greg-
ory’s riveting fictionalized
retelling of the war of the
Plantagenets in The White
Queen: A Novel (Cousins’
War). Gregory’s master
storytelling, delivered by convincing narra-
tor Bianca Amato, is suspenseful, romantic,
and fascinating, especially as she explores
the unsolved mystery of the princes missing
in the Tower of London. Because the story
is told as if it were happening in the present,
I was lost in this 15th century era story and
fell asleep as if I were a child listening to a
bedtime story. Happily, The White Queen is
the first in a series. The audio version lasts
about six hours.
Sometimes it’s just wrong to be the nar-
rator of one’s own audio autobiography.
Barbara Walters and Julie Andrews, two ac-
complished women I admire, led remarkable
lives and have worthy stories to tell. Nonethe-
less, both women, reading their own words
aloud, ended up sounding like they were full
of themselves at times, while at other times
whining … which was not my impression
when I read their words on paper.
Barbara Walters’ book. Audition, is rivet-
ing in its historically significant and rather
personal detail, while Julie Andrews’ autobi-
ography, Home: A Memory of My Early Years,
takes readers through her surprisingly difficult
early life and improbable, yet well-deserved,
rise to success. Both books provide the
private context against which readers can
place the public lives of both women. Wal-
ters’ audio book was about 25 hours, while
Andrews lasted about half that. For these two
autobiographies, I would definitely recom-
mend an old-fashioned book.

religion, politics, and the supernatural—all
set in the 17th century.

Royal Shakespeare Company Plans 2011 NY Visit

Great Britain’s Royal Shakespeare
Company will take up residence at New
York’s Park Avenue Armory in 2011, pre-
senting five Shakespeare plays in repertory
July 6-August 14, Lincoln Center Festival
and the armory announced last month.
The plays will be chosen from the com-
pany’s 2009 and 2010 seasons and could
include Antony and Cleopatra, As You Like
It, Julius Caesar, King Lear, Romeo and
Juliet or The Winter’s Tale.
The six-week engagement will be part
of Lincoln Center Festival 2011, accord-
ing to festival director Nigel Redden, who
called the visit a “unique opportunity to
experience Shakespeare’s plays performed
by an ensemble of actors whom they (audi-
ences) will get to know over the course of
watching five different productions.”

gram. RSC members most likely will visit

York run, and there are tentative plans for it
to present its Young People’s Shakespeare
productions of Hamlet and Comedy of Er-
rors in Columbus.

atre, film and television.
Known for his bald head, baritone voice
and bristling moustache, the London-born
actor trained at RADA before making his
screen debut in 1950.
In later years he played the loveable
Grandad in children’s TV show Woof!
According to a family friend, Jeffries
died in a nursing home in Poole, Dorset.
Actress Jenny Agutter, star of The
Railway Children, remembered him as
being “an extraordinary character” and
“wonderfully funny”.

Dick Francis has died
in his home in the
Cayman Islands. He
was 89.
Francis was the
author of 42 novels.
He was also a successful jockey, winning
over 350 races.
Francis sold some 60 million books
worldwide and his novels were published
into 20 languages. His works were also
regularly featured in volumes of Reader’s
Digest condensed books. They were all
written in the first person and were meticu-
lously researched and written in longhand.
Francis went on to win numerous ac-
colades for popular fiction in his genre,
including Crime Writer’s Association
told the BBC. “He very much created a
family on set.”
He was seen (with Madge Ryan) in a
1992 episode of Casualty
Born in the East End in 1926, Jeffries
served in Burma during World War II and
would later blame its humidity for his hair
loss. His career saw him play an array of
larger-than-life characters, notably the odi-
ous Marquis of Queensbury in 1960 drama
The Trials of Oscar Wilde.
Despite the success of The Railway
Children, whose script he wrote, he only
made four more films as a director. These
included The Amazing Mr Blunden in
1972, Wombling Free in 1977 and The
Water Babies the following year.
Jeffries’s features served him well
over the years but would often consign
him to authority figures and elderly rela-
tives. He played Dick Van Dyke’s father
Grandpa Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,
despite being the US actor’s junior by six
months.

During his racing career, Francis’s
most famous moment was when his horse,
Devon Loch, fell when he was close to
winning to 1956 Grand National.
In 2006, Francis said of the famous

happened I might never have written a
book, and my books have certainly helped
keep the wolf from the door.”
After he retired from the saddle, Francis
was the Sunday Express racing correspon-
dent for 16 years.
He spent his final years in retirement in
the Cayman Islands and his family said he
“died of old age”.
His spokeswoman, Ruth Cairns, said the
writer is survived by two sons, five grand-
children and one great-grandson.

at age 82.

Sir John, known
as Johnny, died
in a London last
month. He had been ill for several
months.
His wife, the singer Dame Cleo
Laine, announced his death at a
concert at their Buckinghamshire
theatre, where she was performing
with their children.
The concert was celebrating 40
years of the theatre, which the couple
founded in the grounds of their home
in Wavendon. Dame Cleo broke the
news to the artists before the concert
began but did not tell the 400-strong
audience until the finale.
The theatre’s chief executive said
the family had shown “incredible”
bravery.
“I think the audience had a great
sense of shock,” said Monica Fergu-
son. “There were a lot of gasps and
people I spoke to afterwards were
visibly shaken and moved by it.”
Sir John died at the King Edward
VII Hospital in central London.
He was hailed by Jazzwise maga-
zine as “one of the totemic figures
of British jazz” and the UK’s “first
major jazz musician”.
Sir John and Dame Cleo met in
1950 while he was auditioning for
singers with his band, the Dank-
worth Seven.
In 1993 Sir John formed the
Dankworth Generation Band, with
his son Alec.

IAN CARMICHAEL, the British comic
actor who starred in I’m All Right Jack on
the silver screen and played Bertie Wooster
and Lord Peter Wimsey on TV, has died.
He was 89.
Carmichael, who had been ill for more
than a month, died February 5 at his
home in Grosmont
in northern England,
his family said. The
cause of death was
not announced.
Carmichael was
a master at embody-
ing a certain type of
Englishman: diffi-
dent, awkward, often
put-upon, but unfailingly courteous and
well-intentioned.
He appeared in a series of comedies for
the Boulting Brothers including Private’s
Progress (1956), Brothers in Law (1957),
Lucky Jim (1957) and I’m All Right Jack
(1959), in which he played Stanley Win-
drush, a recent graduate and product of the
upper class who takes a factory job and
becomes embroiled in labor strife.
Carmichael also played Windrush in
Private’s Progress.
“I didn’t enjoy I’m All Right Jack as
much as Private’s Progress because I was
simply repeating the part,” Carmichael
said in a British Film Institute interview
in 2002.
McQueen’s Death Hurts London

YES, THERE are other big names: Vivi-
enne Westwood, Stella McCartney and
Paul Smith come to mind. But the sudden
death of Alexander McQueen leaves a
gaping hole at the center of London’s
fashion universe.
McQueen was Britain’s shooting star, a
man who helped make London cool again
in the 1990s. And his personal history
helped inspire others.
The son of a London cabbie, the
youngest of six siblings, McQueen was
a product of the streets, not a posh dilet-

Wodehouse’s upper-class twit, Bertie
Wooster, agreeing only after a short,
unhappy stint in New York in 1965 in the
stage version of Boeing Boeing.
DELIGHTED
“I’m delighted to say, the play flopped,”
he said in the BFI interview. “I hated New
York, I loathed it.”
“The World of Bertie Wooster” was a
hit, running to 20 episodes though it didn’t
soften Carmichael’s attitude toward the
character. “Bertie had only one facet: he
was a complete bloody idiot,” he said.
“Cary Grant roles are ones I would
love to have played, but I was never given
any,” he said.
Carmichael was the driving force for the
television productions of the Lord Peter
Wimsey, which provided him a meatier
role as Dorothy L Sayers’ insouciant but
keen-minded amateur detective.
“It’s the one I wanted to do very much
because I wanted to get away from the
stupidity,” Carmichael said, but typecast-
ing nearly thwarted him.
Prospective producers, however, want-
ed someone else to star. “They all felt
that I was going to turn him into another
Wooster, you see, purely because he wore
a monocle every now and again.”
Carmichael is survived by his wife,
Kate Fenton, and two daughters from his
first marriage to Pym Maclean, who died
in 1983.

THE 21st Winter Olympic Games, February
12-28, opened under a cloud in Vancouver,
after luge competitor Nodar Kumaritashvili
of Georgia died during a training run. While
the rest of North America was under several
feet of snow, Canada’s Olympic officials
looked hopefully skyward, as the white
stuff was not plentiful in British Colombia.

medals in 86 events. Shelley Rudman led

bell saved him. The 22-year-old continued
his aggression during the fifth and the referee
stopped the fight. The Welshman already

FORMULA ONE
The New Formula One season starts

The 2010 schedule is 19 races with 13 teams

This year there are five new teams com-
peting. Sir Richard Branson is sponsoring a
British effort called Virgin Racing with drivers
Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi.
Lotus are fielding a team for the first time
since 1994, and the Americans return to For-
mula One after a 25 year absence under the
eyes of Peter Windsor and Ken Anderson.
BMW have dropped out, but former driver
Pete Sauber takes up the challenge, while
a Spanish team, Campos Meta with Bruno
Senna adds their name to the list of newcom-
ers. Seven-time world champion Michael
Schumacher comes out of a three-year
retirement to drive for Mercedes.
YACHTING
After nearly three years in a New York
Court, the delayed America’s Cup took
place off the coast of Valencia, Spain, mid-
February. Yachting’s biggest extravaganza
proved anti-climactic however as Larry El-
lison’s monster trimaran BMW Oracle with a
223 foot wing sail beat Swiss holders Alinghi,
twice in the three race series by a margin of
five minutes in each contest. The America’s
Cup returns to the United States after a hiatus
of 15 years, since Dennis Connor was beaten
by Team New Zealand in 1995.
GOLF
The WGC Accenture Match-Play champi-
onships in Tucson, Arizona, had an all-British
final, February 21. Ian Poulter over-whelmed
Sergio Garcia in the semi-finals 7 and 6,
while Paul Casey needed an extra six holes
before beating Camilo Villegas of Colombia.
In the final, Poulter would claim his first
American victory winning 4 and 2 over his
British rival.
Earlier, Lee Westwood was beaten in a
play-off for the Dubai Desert Classic, Febru-
ary 7, when Miguel Angel Jimenez took the
honours on the third play-off hole. They had
both finished with 11 under 277
DARTS
An offer by darts magnate Barry Hearn
to merge his Professional Darts Corporation
with The British Darts Organisation was re-
jected by BDO chief Olly Croft. The PDC split
from the BDO in 1993, and the rivals have
had separate world championships since.
Croft called it a “cheap publicity stunt,” but
will turn the offer over to the Counties. Hearn
offered £1m and said he would honour all
existing contracts with sponsors … BDO
world champion Martin “Wolfie” Adams,
won the Dutch Open beating England team-
mate Scott Waites 3-1 in the final.
EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS
FOOTBALL
The last sixteen clubs left in the Cham-
pions League, began the knockout phase
of the competition with first leg ties played
February 16-17.
The media was quick to note David Beck-
ham’s appearance for AC Milan at San Siro,
where he turned out against his former club

for the first time. Wayne Rooney received the
attention however, with a brace in 66th and
74th minutes that gave Manchester United a
3-2 win over the Italians. The game drew a
sellout crowd of 80,000. Ronaldinho had put
Milan in front after just three minutes. Paul
Scholes grabbed an equalizer nine minutes
from the break. Clarence Seedorf replaced
Beckham in the second half, and scored five
minutes from time.
Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasc Fabianski
fumbled the ball in to his own net in the 11th
minute in Portugal, but Sol Campbell levelled
the game seven minutes later. Garcia found
the net in the 52nd minute to give Porto a
2-1 advantage to take to London. Chelsea
will play away at Inter-Milan, February 25.
Second legs March 9-10.
EUROPA LEAGUE
Down to the last 32, the Europa League
commenced its first legs, February 16 and18.
Everton carved out a 2-1 win against Sport-
ing Lisbon at Goddison Park with a goal in
each half by Steven Pienaar and Sylvain
Distin. Sporting scored from a penalty three
minutes from time. A David Ngog goal in
the 81st minute gave Liverpool a 1-0 win
over Unirea Urzceni of Romania at Anfield.
Fulham owner Mohammed Fayed ejected
Shaktar Donestsk players from his fashion-
able Harrods store, concerned there were
much too big a group and interfered with
business. At Craven Cottage, the Ukrainians
received a second hostile welcome with
Fulham winning 2-1. Zoltan Gera put the
Londoners ahead after three minutes, while
Luz Adriano made it 1-1 after 32 minutes.
Bobby Zamora got the winner in the 63rd
minute. Second legs, February 25.
JOHN TERRY OUT
Allegations of a affair with a team-mate’s
girlfriend has resulted in Fabio Capello taking
the England captaincy from John Terry, and
giving it to Rio Ferdinand. Terry had allegedly
formed a close friendship with then Chelsea
team-mate Wayne Bridge’s paramour, Van-
essa Perroncel, a lingerie model.
Capello met with four members of the
English Football Association before mak-
ing his decision. He was concerned about
team morale. Terry said he respected the
coaches decision, while Perroncel said she
will not be selling her story to the tabloids.
England’s next fixture is a March 3, friendly
at Wembley, against newly crowned African
Cup Champions Egypt.
FA CUP
The fourth round replays of the FA Cup,
February 2-3, saw two premier sides ousted
by teams from the lower divisions. Wigan
were held 2-2 at Notts County, but in the
replay the feisty second division outfit took
the lead with a goal in the 75th minute cour-
tesy of Stephen Hunt. A Gary Caldwell own
goal three minutes later gave the County
a 2-0 win. Crystal Palace had ten points
deducted from their league total because
of financial irregularities, but it didn’t show,
when Wolverampton Wanderers showed up
after a 2-2 result at Molyneaux.
Danny Butterfield dashed the financial
blues away with a hat-trick in six minutes
giving the Palace a 3-1 victory. Manchester
United conquerors Leeds Utd, tied 2-2 at
White Hart Lane, and were looking to take
down the high flying premier side Totten-
ham Hotspur at Elland Road. The visitors
showed loads of confidence however, that
resulted in a Jermain Defoe trio, leading
to the Division one side’s ouster as Spurs
clocked a 3-1 win.
The fifth round February 13-14, saw Ports-
mouth discard their money problems and win
4-1 at Southampton. Chelsea moved forward
with a 4-1 drubbing of Cardiff City at Stam-
ford Bridge. Fulham drove over Notts County
4-0, while money troubled Crystal Palace
held Aston Villa 2-2 at Selhurst Park.
SCOTTISH SOCCER
The semi-finals of the Co-op Insurance
League Cup, February 2-3, saw Rangers find
the net twice in the first half at Hampden Park,
beating St Johnstone 2-0. Stephen Davis
and Lee McCulloch were the marksmen.
In the other semi-final at Fir Park, a Billy
Mehmet goal six minutes after the break
gave St Mirren a 1-0 win over Hearts. The
League Cup final is scheduled at Hampden
Park, March 21.
The fifth round of the Active Nation Scot-
tish Cup, February 6-7, paired the League
Cup finalists together at St Mirren, where
Rangers tussled for goalless draw. At Ibrox
in the replay, Kris Boyd saved red-faces and
netted in the 86th minute to give Rangers a
1-0, entrance to the next round. Celtic moved
to the quarter-finals winning at Dumfermline
4-2, where new signing Robbie Keane
scored from the penalty spot for his first goal
for the hoops. Kamara, Rasmussen and an
own goal by Callum Woods provided the

Ireland 29, Italy 11
THIS WAS just what the doctor ordered for
the Grand Slam holders, Ireland – a straight-
forward home
fixture against
the Six Na-
tions’ wooden
spoon men. It
was predict-
ably boring.
The Irish were
never going to

and the Italians
were never going to win. Simple.
So it turned into a game where the home
side played with a little adventure in the first
half, posting a 23-8 interval lead, thanks to
nicely worked tried from Jamie Heaslip and
Tomas O’Leary. The visitors decided that
there were two possibilities of restricting the
scoring – either by kicking the ball aimlessly
a long way downfield or by retaining posses-
sion at the ruck and waiting for something
to happen.
Nothing did. Ronan O’Gara kicked four
penalties and converted the tries. Brian
O’Driscoll was as brilliant as ever but this
was a lesson in somnolence.
England 30, Wales 17
This stirring contest ended in the 33rd
minute. This was the moment when Alun Wyn
Jones poked out a leg to trip Dylan Hartley
as he trundled aimlessly somewhere out on
the halfway line. Wyn Jones went to the sin
bin and Jonny Wilkinson proceeded to score
from the penalty. In the next ten minutes
spanning the interval, England rammed home
their one-man advantage with 17 unanswered
points, a try apiece for James Haskell and
Danny Care.
Back at full strength, Wales fought back
to 17-20 running in two tries of their own,
one a marvellous solo effort from James
Hook. With under five minutes on the clock
and Wales pressing again, an away victory
seemed the likeliest outcome. But a stray
pass from Stephen Jones found the hand of
Delon Armitage who streaked away upfield
with three men in attendance. The killer try
was scored by Man of the Match James
Haskell, converted by Wilkinson who also
added a last-minute penalty.
England needed luck to kill off the game
and though Wales looked good in the final 30
minutes, it was their indiscipline and sloppi-
ness that let England off the hook.
Scotland 9, France 18
Possibly the most interesting thing about
this match was the absence of Euan Murray
who chose to withdraw from the national
side since the game, played on a Sunday,
offended his religious principles. Shades of
the 1924 Olympic gold medallist, Eric Liddell
but this story had a more prosaic outcome
– Scotland lost!
One of the main reasons for this was
the talented French outside-centre, Mathieu
Bastareaud . At 17 stone 4 pounds, he takes
some stopping – and twice Scotland failed
to do that in this match. The 21-year-old
sparked off a diplomatic incident in New Zea-
land last year when he claimed to have been
mugged on a night out in Wellington. After
police investigations he admitted that he had

Ross County’s 9-0 home slaughter of Stirling
Albion. Gary Wood got three. Aberdeen were
ousted by Division One’s Raith Rovers, who
held the Dons 1-1 at home, and then won
the replay at Pittodrie 1-0, with a goal by
Gregory Stade.
Rangers opened up a ten point gap over
Celtic in the Premier Scottish League mid-
February. The Hoops chase was not furthered
at Kilmarnock, February 3, where the hosts’
claimed a first home victory over the green
and whites in nine years. The game marked
the debut of Celtic’s recently signed Robbie
Keane from Tottenham, but it was on-loan
Aberdeen striker Chris Maguire who hit
the net in the 52nd minute for a celebratory
one goal victory over the Glasgow side. A
goal-bonanza ensued at Pittodrie, February
13, where Aberdeen came from behind to
tie 4-4 with a Celtic side that thought it had
produced the goods.
AFRICAN CUP
Egypt won the African Nations Cup for the
third consecutive tournament and a record
seventh time, after a 1-0 win over Ghana in
Luanda, January 31. A 45,000 crowd watch
substitute Mohamed Gedo break the ice five
minutes from time. The Pharaohs gained
revenge for their World Cup ouster by Algeria,
beating the north Africans in a bad-tempered
semi-final 4-0, which witnessed Algeria down
to eight men. CAF have banned Togo from
the next two African Cups, and fined them
$50,000, citing government interference in
the decision to withdrawal after a terrorist
attack saw three men killed on Togo team
bus. A big demonstration in Lome, loudly
denounced the decision. Togo will appeal.

his New Zealand counterpart.
All of which is far more interesting than this
match was: a creaky Scots pack never im-
posed themselves on the French and needed
three penalties from Chris Paterson to make
the score line respectable. France moved on
in ominous comfort.
Wales 31, Scotland 24
– An astonishing conclusion
This was the score you would have
expected but the way it was reached was
absolutely astonishing. In the 33rd minute
of the second half Scotland were 24-14
up and heading for a shock yet thoroughly
deserved victory.
At that moment, the Scottish hooker, Scott
Lawson, was sinbinned for yet again killing
the ball in the maul. Wales steamed up for
Leigh Halfpenny to score under the posts
with four minutes on the clock. Back came
Wales straight away and when Lee Byrne
kicked ahead for a score under the post he
was tripped by Phil Godwin who was im-
mediately sent off. Stephen Jones took the
resultant penalty with seconds left on the
clock - 24-24.
Instead of hitting the kick-off straight into
touch, Mike Blair’s drop-out landed cleanly
in Welsh arms. A series of sweeping moves
ensued with the ball eventually popping up
to Shane Williams four yards from the line
under the posts. Jones’ conversion meant
that Wales had scored 17 points in seven
minutes to record an incredible and totally
unmerited victory.
Later that evening, possibly believing after
this game that all Welsh players can now walk
on water, flanker Andy Powell was one of two
men arrested for driving a golf buggy on the
M4. Both were breathalysed!
France 33, Ireland 10
Ireland’s twelve-match unbeaten run came
to an inglorious end in Paris with another
storming performance from a French side
that look likely Grand Slam winners. Their
pack was strong, pacy and skilful, while
outside Gallic flair allied to the same sort of
speed and strength made them irresistible
in this match.
Ireland have only won twice in Paris in
the last 60 years. Brian O’Driscoll reflected
ruefully on his ‘huge disappointment’ but he
did not accept that defeat meant the end of
an era. Ireland, though, did look pretty tired
at times and new blood is vital.
Italy 12, England 17
Italy had a little to offer in this deadly
dull encounter in Rome. Just occasionally,
instead of kicking the ball into the air, they
would run with it. England had little more
to offer. They are technically competent
but completely lack the ability to improvise
and excite.
Even Jonny Wilkinson’s kicking was awry
in this match, missing at least two sitting
ducks though it was his injury-time drop-goal
that finally dispelled Italian hopes of a first
victory in 16 meetings.
For the record, Matthew Tait scored the
game’s only try in a move of sweet simplic-
ity which showed that if England could play
with more adventure and less reliance on
defensiveness, they could be good. But is it
asking too much?

Players Could Avoid Red
Cards Over Penalties
SOCCER’S lawmaking body will recon-
sider whether players who concede penalties
should also be sent off.
The current triple-punishment means a
player who denies the opposing team a goal-
scoring opportunity is red-carded, handed a
suspension and the opposition is awarded
a penalty kick.
FIFA has put the issue on the agenda for
the annual International Football Association
Board meeting, which takes place in Zurich
next month. England’s outgoing refereeing
chief Keith Hackett recently urged IFAB
members to change the rule.
“Why are you sending a player off when
you have already reinstated that goal-scoring
opportunity as a penalty kick?” Hackett said
in an interview with The Associated Press.
“If you take the logic of that, the penalty kick
is actually reinstating the opportunity. Just
award the penalty kick if it is inside the penalty
area and caution the player.”
Eriksson Quits Notts County
After Takeover
NOTTS COUNTY’S new chief executive says
Sven-Goran Eriksson has quit the English
fourth-tier club following a takeover.
Jim Rodwell told the BBC that the former
England coach has “resigned his position
today as director of football.”
Eriksson, former coach of the national
teams of England and Mexico, has accepted
the role of joint life president but Rodwell
expects the Swede to “move on to bigger
and better things.”
Executive chairman Peter Trembling has
sold his 90 percent majority shareholding to a
new group of investors and is leaving the club
immediately. Eriksson joined Notts County in
July with the aim of taking the club back to the
topflight for the first time since 1991.
Ashley Cole Out For Three
Months With Broken Ankle
ENGLAND left back Ashley Cole has broken
his left ankle during a challenge from Landon
Donovan, an injury that will sideline him for
about three months but should allow him to
return for the World Cup.
The injury raises the possibility England
coach Fabio Capello could start Wayne Bridge
alongside John Terry for a March 3 exhibition
game against Wembley.
Cole was injured while playing for Chel-
sea against Everton in the Premier League
February 10, and a scan revealed the extent
of the injury.
Cole’s backup on England’s national team
is Bridge. Terry was dropped as England’s
captain last month following reports that Terry
had an affair with Bridge’s former girlfriend.
Leeds United Investigating
Attack On Players
LEEDS UNITED CEO Shaun Harvey confirmed
that the club will contact the FA to express
its concern over the apparent lack of security
at Carlisle following the conclusion of last
month’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Area Final
second leg.
Leeds alleges that its players were ac-
costed by Carlisle fans immediately after
the match, which Carlisle won in a penalty
shoot-out.
Leeds manager Simon Grayson said that
three of his players were punched by fans in
the post-match melee.
John Nixon, Carlisle’s managing director,
said in a statement that the situation was dealt
with “in textbook fashion.”
Stoke’s Fuller Arrested Over
‘Nightclub Incident’
STOKE CITY striker Ricardo Fuller was arrest-
ed last month over what the Premier League
club calls “an incident in a nightclub.”
Stoke says that Fuller was arrested by
police in the early hours of Sunday in the
Hanley suburb of Stoke.
Fuller had played in Saturday’s 3-0 win
over Blackburn without scoring.
Fuller scored 11 Premier League goals
in 2008-09 but has just one in 22 games
this season.
Bolton’s Cahill Out For
‘Months’ With Blood Clot
BOLTON defender Gary Cahill may miss the
rest of the Premier League season because
of a blood clot in his arm.
Cahill was treated in hospital last month to
dissolve the clot but needs more treatment.
Manager Owen Coyle says Cahill “wanted
to play on Saturday, but we took the decision
out of his hands because his well-being is of
paramount importance.”
Coyle says Cahill will be out for “a number
of months,” likely ending any chance he had
of making England’s World Cup squad.
Portsmouth Owner Says
Administration Now Likely
PORTSMOUTH owner Balram Chainrai said
the club will go into financial administration
unless new owners can be found by Febru-
ary 26.
Pompey has six days to prove it can
continue to operate with debts reported at
£70m and facing a winding-up order from
the government’s Revenue and Customs
authority over unpaid tax.
But Chainrai – the fourth different owner
of the Premier League club this season and
only holding the position on a short-term
basis – issued a statement saying he and
fellow investors were in talks with several
potential buyers.
Chainrai said it was unlikely a deal would
be done before the March 1 court hearing and
that administration, which would suspend the
winding-up order but result in Portsmouth
being deducted nine points, would be the
only route left open.
Only two years ago, the club won the FA
Cup and finished eighth in the league.

Cook Prepares For Captaincy
DOUBTS persist over the wisdom of Andrew
Strauss in taking a break from the national
captaincy on England’s current tour of Ban-
gladesh. His replacement, Alastair Cook, is
very much up for the job.
Cook’s other serious contender for the
role when Strauss eventually retires is Kevin
Pietersen. Cook’s admiration for the man is
evident, ‘You can’t keep world-class players
down for long…I’ve never seen a guy work so
hard on his game, even in South Africa when
it wasn’t going so well…Everyone is looking
forward to doing something maybe great in
Australia but that’s not going to happen if we
get ahead of ourselves.’ Whatever that means.
One thing is certain: that Cook would be happy
to see Pietersen appointed as vice-captain to
help him with on-pitch decisions.
Decision Review System Approved
The International Cricket Council has
approved the use of the television Decision
Review System.
Its written report reads, “In 13 Test
matches the percentage of correct decisions
has risen from 91.3 percent to 97.44 percent.
The board supported a desire for work to
continue to build on the encouraging results
from the first 13 matches and will discuss
further technological improvements with
broadcasters in March to improve and refine
the DRS further.”
One limitation of the system was its reli-
ance on host broadcasters, not all of whom
are able to afford technological aids such as
“hot spot” or the “snickometer”. But that has
not yet been resolved.
The ICC also approved a process for
Ireland’s application for full Test status to
be implemented. We all want to see speedy
action on this.
Another move the ICC wish to see encour-
aged is the day/night Test match. While Test
cricket remains popular in England and Aus-
tralia, the recent developments in Twenty20
cricket have depressed Test cricket’s popu-
larity in places like India. Much to their credit
the ICC seem determined not to let the longer
game wither on the vine.
Afghan Success
Now here’s a good question for the sport-
ing polymath. What is Afghanistan’s most
popular sport?
Yes, it really is cricket. The Afghanistan
Cricket Federation was founded in 1995 In
2006, they played their first game against
MCC in Mumbai, beating them after Mike
Gatting was out for a duck. The next year
they toured England, winning six out of seven
games against country second elevens.
They progressed up the bottom two divi-
sions of the World Cricket League, winning
Division Three in 2009. They followed this with
victories over Denmark, Bermuda, Ireland and
Scotland but just missed out qualifying for the
World Cup. This year they reached the final
qualifying rounds for the Twenty20 World Cup
in the West Indies later this year.
In the Dubai final they beat Ireland by
eight wickets, booking their berth in May’s
12-team World Twenty20 tournament. By
any measure, there is an astonishing rise to
prominence.
English Spinner Tops Ratings
Graeme Swann has been officially recog-
nised in the ICC ratings as the world’s best
spin bowler. He is the foremost spinner in
the list, coming third overall with Muttiah
Murilitharan one place behind him. This is
an enormous achievement for a man who
barely twelve months ago was struggling to
get into the English side.
