This place has won our hearts. The
owners, Johanna and Carl, are just
the sweetest and most conscious
people imaginable and the natural
food restaurant they created is a
gem. Located in the Lumberyard
shopping center in Encinitas, right
on the Coast Highway 101, the Lotus Cafe features a predominantly vegetarian
menu with a few chicken and fish options for non-vegetarian patrons. Vegans
and the growing number of people who are finding themselves gluten intoler-
ant will also be happy with the menu. We love their homemade soups and sal-
ads (all their dressings are made from scratch). The atmosphere has a peaceful
and somewhat spiritual vibe, and beautiful paintings of lotus flowers adorn the
walls. The flooring in the dining area is made of fossilized bamboo, the chairs
are recycled, and the stained glass pane is repurposed from an old building in
Oregon. The next time you are in Encinitas, treat your body (and soul) by stop-
ping in. Be sure to try a vegan cupcake (chocolate or carrot with vegan “cream

Hike: Palomar Mountain
Observatory Trail By Sheri McGregor
Location: From I-15 N., take the Highway 76 exit. Drive east approximately
20 miles then turn left onto a northeast fork marked “South Grade.” Continue
6.5 miles to a “T” intersection. Turn left here onto S-6 and drive approxi-
mately 3 miles to the Palomar Observatory Campground entrance on the
right. Follow the campground loop to a small signed turnout near camp
spaces 19 and 20.
Difficulty: Moderate Distance: 3.8 miles roundtrip

Dog Friendly: No Hours: Daily, May to November
Entrance Fees: Cleveland National Forest Adventure Pass (One-day $5 or
Annual $30). A National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Annual Pass

Just a few steps onto the Palomar Mountain Observatory Trail you’ll find
woodland splendor and quietude. Dense oak and conifer forest envelops you
in beauty and peace on this well-defined, meandering trail. Give yourself
plenty of time to enjoy the scenery. At about half a mile, a picturesque
overlook of Mendenhall Valley framed by pines awaits you. This postcard
view changes with the seasons: the soft greens of new spring growth, golden
summer meadows dotted with small water bodies that reflect blue sky, vivid
fall colors, or the crisp white of winter snow.
In spring, you’re likely to see lots of blooms. Fleabane, goldenrod, and

yellow monkey flower brighten spots where dappled sunlight filters through
the stretching limbs of mature oaks and pines. Seasonal watershed gurgles
alongside the climbing trail, and beneath plank bridges. Benches are placed
sporadically along the path that leads through shaded forest and grassy
meadows to an abrupt endpoint at CA S6. Here, you can make your way
through the parking lot and visit the observatory (open daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.),
or head back the way you came.
Be sure to bring along extra water, give yourself plenty of time to absorb
nature’s serenity, and perhaps even stop for a rest among the lichen- and
moss-speckled boulders. The Palomar Mountain Observatory Trail climbs
from 4500 to 5500 feet above sea level in 1.9 miles. Although the trail itself is
not difficult, activity in this thinner mountain air can be physically taxing, so
don’t overdo it. Watch for possible rattlesnakes and poison oak. Mountain
weather can change swiftly, so dress in layers. Restrooms are located near the
parking area.

“Coming Clean Campaign,” they are calling out companies that are using

with the goal of restoring and protecting the integrity of the organic label
and industry. They are pushing for USDA enforcement of organic label-

Sustainable fashion involves clothing that is
made from materials that reduce harm to the
environment, and support the health of the
consumers, as well as the people who make and
distribute them.
In general, they are Fair Trade and made to last,
using sustainable and organic raw materials. They are
also colored without the use of harmful chemicals
(such as bleach).
Look for these terms when shopping:

Bamboo-is a natural and renewable resource that can
be made into beautiful (and silky-soft) fabrics. It grows
very quickly and does not need fertilizers or pesticides.
Tencel-is a strong fabric made from 100% biodegrad-
able cellulose, extracted from wood pulp using a non-
toxic process. It is buttery-soft and quite luxurious.
Organic Cotton-is grown without the use of
pesticides, herbicides, or artificial fertilizers, and
is free of formaldehyde finishes. In contrast,
conventional cotton is grown using one pound
of toxic chemicals per three pounds of cotton
(these chemicals ultimately end up in our water system and food chain).
Hemp-is a very durable, breatheable, and naturally UV resistant fiber.
The feel is similar to linen, but softer. The plant grows easily, without
the use of pesticides or other chemicals.
Recycled, Repurposed, or Reused-High-quality clothing can be
made from recycled textiles and even recycled plastic bottles, saving on
landfill space and the amount of raw materials used.
Fair Trade-means that the people who make the clothing are paid a fair
price and have decent working conditions.

is farming that is supported by the local
residents. The farm will sell “shares” or
boxes of their goods, usually fresh-picked, organic produce, and sometimes
diary and meat, to participants. The purchaser pays the farm directly and will
pick up their goods at the farm or a nearby location. They can choose how
much and how often they receive their boxes to suit their needs. The prices are
very competitive to the grocery stores and many times will “out-deal” the local
markets depending on the available supply.
CSAs are a wonderful way to support your local farm and to receive the freshest
possible goods. It is also a way to buy from a clean, safe, and trusted source.
With the worries of pesticides and food-borne illnesses, many people choose the
CSA to avoid those issues. Becoming a member is also a great way to stay
connected with your community and grow a good relationship with and a new

Every week in most areas of San Diego, a street becomes alive with colorful flowers,
glistening fruits and vegetables, herbs, farm fresh eggs, free tastings and gourmet
food, all grown and produced locally. Going to a farmers market and meeting the
person who planted, grew and harvested the food you will eat is a special experience.
Shopping at your local farmers market helps to keep small family farms in
existence. When you purchase food from a Farmers Market, more of the pro-
ceeds will also go directly to the farmer as it eliminates the middle man.
It is also an enjoyable way to get some exercise, stimulate your senses, meet other
members of your community, and support local farmers. Make it a weekly ritual and
don’t forget to bring along a large canvas shopping bag!

What does ‘Organic’ mean?

‘Organic’ is a labeling term for products that have been grown or produced natural-
ly, without the use of synthetic (or petroleum derived) chemicals such as pesticides,
fungicides, herbicides, and fertilizers. The certified label also lets consumers know
that the product was not grown with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or
sewage sludge, and has not been irradiated.
Animals raised organically must eat 100% organic feed that does not contain any
animal byproducts, and they must not be given antibiotics and growth hormones.
They must have access to the outdoors (although the definition of “outdoor access”
for chickens is ambiguous because they can have extremely limited access to the
outdoors and still meet the criteria).
Organic production uses practices that enhance the ecological balance of natural
systems. There is respect for the health of interdependent communities of plants,
animals, people, and the soil. With healthier soils, nutrient content is higher and
many people notice that organically grown foods taste better than their convention-
ally grown counterparts.
By choosing products and food that are organic, you will be helping to keep pes-
ticides and chemicals out of our air, water, and food. You will also be giving your
financial support to farmers who are using responsible agricultural methods.

Washing reduces pesticide residue but doesn’t eliminate it. Some pesticides are absorbed
into the plant and others bind to the surface and can’t be washed off easily. Peeling the fruit
or vegetable reduces the problem but takes out valuable nutrients.

Tiers of Organic Labeling:

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has developed a fixed set of standards
that must be met by anyone using the “organic” label in the United States (whether
or not the product is from the US or imported). Here are the meanings of some
common labels you might encounter while shopping:
-USDA 100% Organic:

These products are certified by the US Department of Agriculture as containing 100%
organic ingredients and can display the USDA Organic Logo and/or the certifiers logo.
-USDA Organic:
These products are certified by the US Department of Agriculture as containing at
least 95% organic ingredients. The remaining 5% must come from non-organic
ingredients that have been approved by the National Organic Standards Board
(NOSB). These products can also display the USDA organic logo and/or the certi-
fiers logo.
-Made With Organic Ingredients:
Food products labeled as “made with organic ingredients” must be made with at
least 70% organic ingredients, three of which must be listed on the back of the pack-
age and again the remaining 30% of the non-organic ingredients must be approved
by the NOSB. These products may display the certifier’s logo but not the USDA
organic logo.
-No Spray:
This term is used to indicate that no pesticides were sprayed on the crops them-
selves. However, this term is usually not 3rd party certified so you have to take the
word of the grower. Chemical fertilizers and herbicides may have been sprayed on
the soil before the crops were planted.
-Transitional:
The grower is using all organic methods, but has not done so for the required 3 years
straight to receive organic certification. May or may not be certified transitional. Natural Food Stores
-Natural:
This label doesn’t really mean much except on meat and poultry, where the USDA
says that the meat must not contain artificial ingredients such as dyes, preservatives,
flavorings, antibiotics, and hormones. There is no certification or verification pro-
cess for the use of this label, however, which means that it is largely unregulated.
Before a product can be labeled “organic,” a government approved certifier must inspect the
farm where the food or plants are grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules
necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Here are two commonly used organic certifiers:
Oregon Tilth Certified Organic (OTCO)
California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF)
Enforcement of these standards appears to be less rigorous on personal care products than on
food products. Many personal care products claiming to be organic also contain synthetic and
petroleum derived ingredients that have not been reviewed by the National Organics Standards
Board.

CAFE
L otus Café is now my new favorite restaurant in the San Diego area. The ambiance
inside is peaceful and serene, and their comforting food will leave you feeling
healthier than when you came in. The owners, Johanna and her husband Carl, opened
this delightful place in the Lumberyard shopping center in Encinitas in September of
2009. Both are dedicated yoga practitioners and have been vegetarians for 16 years.
The name, Lotus Café, came to Carl after a morning meditation and the theme is
carried throughout their restaurant with beautiful artwork and a soft spiritual vibe.
Every aspect of Lotus Café was thought through with love and positive intentions -
from the fossilized bamboo flooring in the dining area and the recycled redwood
tables outside, to the hand carved statue of Ganesha that greets people at the entrance.
On the menu at Lotus Café you will find predominantly vegetarian offerings, with
lots of vegan and gluten-free choices. They do offer some poultry and fish (sustainably
sourced) options for non-vegetarian patrons. The food is fresh, natural, and their prices
are very reasonable. The selection of salads, sandwiches, pasta, and entrees are priced
anywhere from $4.75 to $9.95. They also offer a fresh juice bar (squeezed to order),
shakes, wheatgrass, acai bowls, and smoothies. Soups and vegan desserts, like
chocolate and carrot cupcakes, are made fresh from scratch each morning. The curried
cauliflower and chickpea soup is delicious, as is the lotus salad (a vibrant mix of
organic baby leaf lettuce adorned with radish, jicama, sprouts, and other goodies). You
