Paper is collected in all offices in

plastic sacks which are placed in
waste collection points for regular
weekly collection by the Porters.
The sacks of paper are transported to
a large locked container.
Our secure shredding contractor
empties the container and removes
the sacks of paper weekly, taking
them to their depot, shredded and
then pulped.

Cardboard is collected in offices,

broken down and placed in waste
collection points for the regular weekly
collection. The Porters collect and
transport to site skips.

Where does it go?

Once a week contractors visit site to

empty the skips and transport the
cardboard to their depot in Corby.
Metal

All suitable metal is stored on site, we

are able to recycle both Ferrous and
Non-ferrous metals.

this is then used to power the delivery

vehicles of one of our main foodstuff
providers.

Contractors transport the metal to

their depot in Milton Keynes, where it
is sorted and smelted. All metal
processed is sold on to UK
manufacturers.

Plastic & cans

WEEE (Waste Electrical &

Electronic Equipment)

Plastic bottles, packaging and all types

of cans are collected from offices, staff
kitchens and catering outlets by our
cleaning staff using clear sacks.
If other items end up in the recycling
sack (such as blue roll), they will be
viewed as contaminated waste and
will go to landfill.
Please help us to reduce our
proportion of landfill waste by
being vigilant.
CDs

Electrical and computer equipment is

transported by the Porters to the
WEEE skip which is kept locked.
When full the waste is transported to a
depot in Daventry, where it is sorted
into components that can be re-used
and metal & plastic that can be
recycled.
Food waste
We are currently reviewing options for
the recycling of our food waste.
Eliminating food waste from
refuse collections can significantly
reduce waste collection and
landfill charges.
An excellent example of how we can
re-use our resources is the conversion
of our used cooking oil to bio-diesel,

We have expanded the recycling of

CDs and are now able to recycle:

Audio cassettes

Video cassettes

Floppy discs

They are boxed and palletised then

delivered to the processing plant by
our Porters.
Compacted Waste
This used to be sent to landfill,
however recent developments in
extracting materials from waste
means we can now convert a high
percentage of this waste to fuel. The
remainder is further sorted, turned
into usable fibres and re-used.

Non-contaminated glass
Staff are encouraged to remove glass
from office areas and place in
receptacles, which are located on the
glass recycling map
To avoid the risk of injury glass
should not be put in the normal
waste stream. If you cannot take
it to the bins provided you should
take it home for recycling

batteries can be found in catering
outlets as follows:

Bins are provided in The Hub, Berrill
Caf, Michael Young Caf and East
Campus Caf for compostable items.
Please deposit the following items
only in these bins:

Disposable coffee cups (please

put the lids in the cans and
plastics bin)

Sandwich packaging (brown

cardboard)

Salad boxes (brown cardboard)

For compostable packaging food

contamination is not an issue.
The plastic salad and yoghurt pots can
be placed in cans and plastics
recycling but will need to be rinsed
first.
Please do not put the following in
recycling or compostable bins (these
must go to landfill).

When items that cannot be

recycled are included, sacks are
classed as contaminated waste
and sent to landfill.
