ANTIBIOTIC FOR CELLULITIS. Treatmentofinfectionsdue


tosusceptibleorganismsinskinandskinstructures,intra
abdominalinfections,andgynecologicinfections.

Ampicillininhibitsthefinalstageofbacterialcellwall
synthesisbybindingtospecificpenicillinbindingproteins
(PBPs)locatedinsidethebacterialcellwall,thusdestroying
thecellwall.Sulbactaminhibitsbetalactamases,most
frequentlyresponsiblefortransferreddrugresistance.Thus
thespectrumofdrugsaffectedbythecombinationofthe
twoisincreased.

3. What are the major side effects/adverse effects of


this medication?

BodyasaWhole:Hypersensitivity(rash,itching,
anaphylactoidreaction),fatigue,malaise,headache,
chills,edema.GI:Diarrhea,nausea,vomiting,
abdominaldistention,candidiasis.Hematologic:
Neutropenia,thrombocytopenia.Urogenital:Dysuria.
CNS:Seizures.Other:Localpainatinjectionsite;
thrombophlebitis.

4. What are the important nursing considerations


related to administering this medication?

MONITOR I/OS, AND LAB TESTS. Determineprevious


hypersensitivityreactionstopenicillins,cephalosporins,
andotherallergenspriortotherapy.Reportpromptly
unexplainedbleeding(e.g.,epistaxis,purpura,
ecchymoses).Monitorpatientcarefullyduringthefirst30
minafterinitiationofIVtherapyforsignsof
hypersensitivityandanaphylactoidreaction
