Model answer
Todays families are generally much smaller than families during our fore fathers
time. A typical family today consists of four or five members, including the parents. If I
were given a choice, I would prefer to be in a big family. This is because I would be a
happier person.
My siblings can be my playmates both at home and outside. I will not be so lonely.
On the other hand, being the only child will make feel lonely. I have to look for playmates
outside of my home. Moreover, my older siblings will help me in my studies if I have
problems.
Besides, I learn to practice the give and take attitude with my brothers and sisters.
This helps me develop a caring and understanding character during my formative years.
In contrast, a person who is raised from a small family tends to be selfcentered and
selfish. At home, he or she does not have to share their things with others. An only child
might be spoilt for he or she might expect others to give in to him or her all the time.
I know that in a big family, the parents attention for their children has to be divided
among all of them. But that does not mean that they lack parental love. In fact, when
parents give equal attention to my siblings and me, it promotes a sense of fairness and
equality. This is a quality I can always carry and practice in my life.
Despite having to share my things with my brothers and sisters, I still think that life is
happier and meaningful in a big family. I am not lonely, I am a better person and life is
certainly more purposeful.

PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The pie chart above shows the enrolment of students attending classes for six subjects at
Perfect Tuition Centre. The enrolment is shown in percentages. Below is a report of the
enrolment for the six subjects at the tuition centre. The report describes the trend for
enrolment of classes at the tuition centre.
A. Identify the Present Tense and Present Continuous Tense used in the report. Underline
the Present Tense once and the Present Continuous Tense twice.
The pie chart shows the enrolment of students for the six subjects at Perfect
Tuition Centre.
From the chart, we know that the two subjects with the highest enrolment are the
two main languages, Bahasa Malaysia and English. The total enrolment for these two
subjects is 50%. This is because the subjects are compulsory and many students are
weak in them. Recently, English has increased in importance with the emphasis by the
Government. A good command of English is necessary to join the job market.
The other subjects like Mathematics, Science and Commerce have an enrolment
of 15% each. Many students face difficulty in studying these subjects too. Moreover, with
todays emphasis on technology and industry, Mathematics and Science subjects are
increasing in importance.
The subject with lowest enrolment is Art, which is only 5%. This is not surprising for
only students who want to pursue a career in Art will take this subject seriously. It is
encouraging to see a certain level of diversity in students interest at a young age itself.
The enrolment of students at Perfect Tuition Centre depends on the importance
and level of difficulty of the subject. Enrolment is higher if the subject is either important or
difficult.

Dear Sir,
Services To Clear Drains
I am a resident of Taman Pokok Assam. I would like to inform you that several drains in
the area are clogged with rubbish.
2
For your information, the drains have not been cleared for almost over a month. As
the water is stagnant, Aedes mosquitoes are beginning to breed here.
3
I hope you can kindly send a team to clear the drains. I suggest that the drains
along Jalan Merbok and Jalan Kunyit be cleared first because many children go to the
playground nearby.
Thank you in advance.
Yours faithfully,
Melissa

Uncollected Garbage
On behalf of the residents in my area, I wish to bring to your attention the problem of
uncollected garbage in my area, that is, Taman Orkid.
2 The garbage has not been collected for two weeks. The garbage bags are pilling up
on each other. Some garbage has even split on the road. The dogs have made a terrible
mess. The whole place smells. Some of the garbage have also fallen into and clogged
the drains. To make things worse, it has not been raining for more than a week. So the
garbage is stuck in the drains all this time.
3 Due to the garbage and smell, the flies are everywhere. This is bad for children when
often play on the road. We worry that the garbage will cause sicknesses among them.
4 I suggest the council look into this matter and arrange for the garbage to be collected
immediately.
Thank you in advance.
Yours faithfully,
Lim Chin Tong

Luckily, we had expected the flood. So, we moved our electrical gadgets
upstairs. We had previously saved our important documents and valuables in the
bank. Luckily, that was taken care of.
By noon, we had to evacuate to higher ground. The Town Council sent
boats to bring us to a safer place. That night, we stayed at a community hall that
was located on higher ground. I did not realize how kind people were till this flood.
You should see the donations pouring in. There were donations of blankets, clothes,
and even money to help us. It is during such crises that nice and compassionate
people come forward to help.
When the water subsided, we moved back to our home. Now my family and I
are still cleaning the house, which is full of mud. It is a lot of hard work.
How about your place? Was it flooded during the heavy rain? I have to stop
now for I still have to scrub the mud off in my bedroom walls. Goodbye and take care.
