Competences and full-time engineering practice exposure

required of an applicant applying for registration as a


Professional engineer with the
Council of Registered Professional Engineers of Mauritius

Applicant for an eventual registration as a Professional Engineer with the Council of Registered
Professional Engineers of Mauritius are kindly requested to take note of the minimum
requirements of the registration process as listed below, which should be over a minimum of
24 months supervised training carried out on a full time basis
Applicants should demonstrate his/her theoretical knowledge, understanding, and ability
[involvement over a minimum of 24 months of supervised training on full time basis]
Applicants ability to apply that knowledge to optimisation of existing and emerging
technologies in their own area of practice.
Applicants should demonstrate his/her application of theoretical knowledge to Engineering
Solutions, Design and Research
[involvement over at least 45 weeks, as detailed below]
A.

Analysis and Solving of Engineering Problems.


[Minimum 15 weeks]

B.

Ability to apply theoretical knowledge to engineering design (to meet specific needs:
purpose and performance).
[Minimum 15 weeks]

C.

Ability to conduct investigations of technical issues consistent with applicants level of


knowledge and understanding, and ability to design and conduct experiments, analyse
and interpret data towards designing and developing an engineering solution
[15 weeks equivalent]

Applicants should demonstrate his/her Management and Leadership Skills


[involvement over at least 40 weeks]

Knowledge and understanding of, and ability to use, the techniques, skills, and modern
engineering tools, including management practices and procedures, necessary for
engineering practice.
Ability to see through the operation of supply and execution of a contract.

Responsibility for Environment, Health and Safety

Applicant to demonstrate that he/she has knowledge of the impact of engineering design
on quality of environment, health and safety, and quality of life, and,

Applicant is able to recognise and assess risks to quality of life, and, consequently, to
design and implement measures and safeguards to enhance quality of environment and
life, and ensure sustainability.

Applicants should demonstrate his/her Interpersonal and Communications Skills


[involvement over a minimum of 24 months of supervised training on full time basis]
Applicant to have awareness of need for developing and enhancing his/her ability to interact
with individuals and groups, including peers, subordinates, clients, administrators, policy
makers and the public.
Applicants should demonstrate his/her recognition of Need for Broad Education, Recognition of
Limits of Professional Competence, Values and Ethics in Professional Practice, and
Commitment to Life-long learning.

A.
A broad education in engineering and allied fields, as may be necessary, for optimum
performance in the course of his/her professional practice,
B.

Ability to recognise limits of personal knowledge and skills, while exercising independent
judgement;

C.

A commitment to a high ethical standard, responsibility in professional practice, and


commitment and ability to engage in a process of life-long learning;

D.

Knowledge of contemporary issues.
