Doctors and Patients

In pairs you will do two role plays according to the role cards
that the teacher will give you. First one student will be the
doctor and the other the patient and then, you will change the
roles. Write down the advice/treatment that the doctor

The class will be divided into two groups. First, one group will be
patients (you will have to think of what health problem and
symptoms each of you has) and the others doctors. Each doctor
will have a different consulting room and each patient will see
all the different doctors to finally choose the best

Prescription Drugs vs. Natural Alternatives

Y3U1A2

BY J O H N G I B B | M E D I C I N E

66

With the lots of information we have, people can become educated more
quickly. Now that health and nutrition information is published in doctor's
office, on television and radio, in grocery stores, and on the Internet, people
have the opportunity to become more informed. You now have access to
more varying opinions and open debates such as whether prescription drugs

Y3U1A2

or natural alternatives are better.

67

Being diagnosed with a serious condition (or illness) is probably one of the
scariest moments a person can experience in their life. Usually doctors give
a prescription medication and people begin their treatment quickly in fear of
becoming sicker. However, there are people who are trying something
different. More and more people are considering natural alternatives to
prescription medication because many medications prescribed for serious

Y3U1A2

health conditions have side effects. Comparing natural alternatives to

68

prescribed medication can help you and your doctor determine which route
is best for you.
Those who defend natural alternatives believe that prescription medications
go against what the body really needs, but there is no concrete data that
proves that natural alternatives are better. However, its well known that the

Y3U1A2

pharmaceutical industry and the medical profession are close associates and

69

that doctors often offer the latest drugs (medication) and only a few of them
consider natural alternatives. Until natural alternatives are investigated and
approved by organizations, such as the United States Food and Drug
Administration that oversee nutritional standards, the debate between
prescribed medication and natural alternatives will continue.

Y3U1A2

Every child has heard the healthy-eating mantra "You are what
you eat." But there may be a closer similarity between good-foryou food and your body than you thought. We found 10 foods

80

To look like(v): to have the

appearance of.
To provide for (v): to make available
or supply.
Though (conj.): even if
To target (v): to direct an action to.

Coincidence? Maybe. Though
these healthy foods are
beneficial to all the body, the
list below is a fun reminder of
what to eat to target specific
areas.
