Wireless Network Setup for Windows XP (Service Pack 2)

It is not recommended to use vendor utility for your wireless network adapter (for example,
Intel PROSet/Wireless, D-Link Air Utility).
1.
On your computer desktop, right-click on the My Network Places icon and then choose
Properties from the pull-down menu.

If there is no My Network Places icon on desktop, from Start menu click Settings > Network
Connections (for the Classic Start menu).

For default Windows XP Start menu, click Start and then right-click on the My Network
Places and choose Properties from the pull-down menu.

If there is no My Network Places icon, from Start menu click Connect To > Show all
connections (for default Windows XP Start menu).

In the Network Connections window, right-click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and
choose Enable from the pull-down menu.

In the Network Connections window, right-click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and
choose Properties.

On the General tab, make sure the Show icon in notification area when connected check box
and the Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity check box are checked
(for your accommodation).

At the top of the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box, click the Wireless
Networks tab.
If there is no Wireless Networks tab, at the bottom of the Wireless Network Connection
Properties dialog box, click the OK button.
From Start menu click Settings > Control Panel.
Then in the Control Panel window, double-click on the Administrative Tools > Services.
Make sure that the Wireless Zero Configuration service is set to Started.
Else double-click on the Wireless Zero Configuration and in the service properties window
click Start button, and then click OK button.
Then in the Network Connections window, right-click on the Wireless Network Connection
icon and choose Properties again.
On the Wireless Networks tab, make sure the check box labeled Use Windows to configure my
wireless network settings is checked.
Then in the Preferred networks section, click the Add... button to continue setup.

On the Association tab, in the Network name (SSID) field, type MIAN (all uppercase letters).
In the Network Authentication field, choose WPA from pull down menu.
If there is no WPA, update driver for your wireless network adapter.
Then in the Data encryption field, choose TKIP from pull down menu.
Make sure the check box labeled This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network; wireless
access points are not used is not checked.

At the top of the Wireless network properties dialog box, click the Authentication tab.
In the EAP type field, choose Protected EAP (PEAP) from pull down menu.
Uncheck the Authenticate as computer when computer information is available check box.
Make sure the check box labeled Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is
unavailable is not checked.
Then click the Properties button to continue setup.

In the Protected EAP Properties dialog box, uncheck the Validate server certificate check box.
Make sure that the Select Authentication Method field is set to Secured password
(EAPMSCHAP v2).
Check the Enable Fast Reconnect check box.
Then click the Configure... button.

In the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties dialog box, uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon
name and password (and domain if any) check box.
Click the OK button.

In the Protected EAP Properties dialog box, click the OK button.
At the top of the Wireless network properties dialog box, click the Connection tab.
Make sure the check box labeled Connect when this network is in range is checked.
Click the OK button.

In the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box, click the OK button to finish
configuring your connection.

When Windows XP attempts to connect for the first time, you should see a balloon pop up in
your taskbar area.
Click once on this balloon.

13.
In the Enter Credentials login box, type your network identification information in the User
name field and Password field.
Leave the Logon domain field blank.
Click the OK button.

14.
When your network connection appears, you will see a balloon announcing it pop up from the
taskbar.
