ofhydrogenembrittlementandhydrogenreductionbyheatingbutitis
necessaryforcompletingtheplating.Weadvisethatsomehighstrength
materialsshouldnotbeplated.Analternativetozincplatingwhichentailsa
verysmallriskofhydrogenembrittlementismechanicalzinccoating(also
referredtoasRotalyt).Thisiswherethesurfacecoatingisapplied

economicalalternativetostainlessmetals,especiallywhencomponent

resistance.Galvanizingismadehotbeforecoldrollingordrawingwhich
eliminatetheriskforhydrogencontamination.

Nickelplating
Nickelisusedfordecorationandcorrosionprotectionbutshouldnotbeused
onspringswherethewirewillbesubjectedtoconsiderabletwisting.Thisis
becausethesurfacelayerishardandwillbeavictimofcrackingatratesof
highdeflection.ExamplesforwhichNickelisoftenusedincludethe
underlyingcoatingfortin,silver,goldetc.

Chromeplating
WeuseChromiumwithunderlyingnickelplatingbecauseitcanbepolished
toaverybrightsurface,meaningitisgenerallyusedfordecorationpurposes.
Thefascinatingelementofthistypeofplatingishowthesurfacebecomes
veryhardandwearresistant.Wedoadviseourcustomershoweverthat
chromeplatingshouldnotbeusedonspringswithlargedeflection.

Tinplating

Silvering/gilding
Mainlyusedfordecorationandcorrosionprotectionforcomponentsin
electricalandelectronicequipment.Thiselectrolyticsilverplatingischosenin
manyapplicationsbecauseofitsexcellentelectricalconductivityanditsbright
attractivefinish.

Phosphating
Therearemanydifferenttypesofphosphatesbuttheonewechoosefor
springsisnormallyzincphosphate.Itisgenerallyusedassubstratebefore
thepaintingasitgivesgoodprotectionagainstcreepcorrosionifthepaint
layerhappenstoreceiveanydefects.Ironphosphateisusedassubstrate
beforepowderpaintingwhenthedemandforresistanceagainstcorrosionis
lower.Ironphosphateisalsousedwithoutpaintfordecorationasitneedsto
besealedwithoilifcorrosionwantstobeavoided.Phosphateincreasesthe
adhesionbetweensteelandpaintsobecomesanidealcoatingtousefor
springswhichareusedforcontinuousmomentum

Blackoxide
Usedtoincreasetheresistanceagainstcorrosionandalsofordecoration,
BlackOxideconsistsofalayerofironoxide.Wemakesuretheproductis
oiledaftertreatmenttoachievemaximumfunctionality.

Electropolishing
Electropolishingisatreatmentwhichisusedforstainlesssteelsandmetal
alloys.Thisparticularsurfacetreatmentremovesthematerialresultinginan
evensurface,givingoffahighglossfinish.Thefatiguelimitforthespringis
raisedaswellascorrosionresistancebeingdramaticallyincreased.

Painting
Paintinggenerallydependsonthespecificdemandsforcorrosionresistance,
meaningitsometimesmustbesprayedwithsaltspraytotestperformance.
Paintingcanbeusedforvarioustypesofsystemsofprotectionandcosmetic
appearance.Wet,powder,primersandzincpaintsystemsareallusedbut
generallyaredismissedfortensioncoilspringswithinitialloads.

DeltaMKS
Thisparticularcoatingsystemcanconsistofabasecoatalone,orcansimply
beabasecoataswellasanorganic/inorganictopcoatdependingonspecific
requirements.Thesetypesofcoatingsarestovesystemswhichmeanthey
chemicallycrosslinkattemperaturesbelow250C.
Thezinclamellasystems,DELTAPROTEKTKLandDELTATonearemicro
layerformingbasecoatswhicharepackedwithzincandaluminiumlamellae
providingcathodiccorrosionprotection.
Thistypeofprotectioncanbegreatlyincreasedbyapplyinganorganictop
coatsuchasDELTASealorusingsilicatewaterbasedproductsfromthe
DELTAPROTEKTVHseries.Theseparticularsystemsgivegood
protectionagainstcorrosionanddonotgiveanyrisksforhydrogen
brittleness,somethingwhichwearealwaysaimingtosolvehereatEuropean
Springs.
Forthehighestadhesion,thecomponentscanbealkalinewashing,shot
peeningandfinecrystallinezincphosphatedbeforethetreatment.

Riskofhydrogenembrittlement!
Hydrogencaneasilycontaminatesteelatcertaincontentsmakingthesteel
brittle.Addingtothis,verylowstressescanleadtoaruptureifhydrogenis
present.
Hydrogenabsorptionoccursduringallreactionswherehydrogenisproduced
onthesurfaceofthesteel.ThisiswhyEuropeanSpringssuppliesSurface
treatmentswhichincludepicklinginnonoxidisingacids,cathodiccleaning
andcathodicsurfacetreatmenttoavoidhydrogenembrittlement.Oil
temperedspringwireformsandflatspringswhichhavebeenhardenedafter
formingarespeciallysensitivetoembrittlement,howevertheriskfor
embrittlementandfailureisreducedthelowertheultimatetensilestrengthis.
Wehavefoundthatingeneral,nohydrogenembrittlementoccursinsteel
below1000MPaorhardnessbelow30Vickersasalargeproportionofthe
hydrogencanberemovedbyheatingprocesses.Wecanalsoprovideyou
withmuchinformationonhowtoavoidhydrogenproblems.

differenttestingmethods,wegiveoutrecommendationsoftestmethodsand
