After a triumphant stretch in which she

soared at the rst Democratic debate and
withstood a GOP assault at the Benghazi
hearings, Democratic presidential frontrunner
Hillary Clinton found herself playing defense
again, this time taking criticism over the 1996
Defense of Marriage Act.
The ap began when Clinton, during
an interview with Rachel Maddow,
characterized DOMA as a defensive

move to thwart a threatened constitutional

amendment that would have banned
same-sex marriage.
And there had to be some way to stop
that, Clinton said. There wasnt a rational
argument because I was in on some of those
discussions on both Dont Ask, Dont Tell
and on DOMA, where both the president,
his advisers and occasionally I would chime
in and talk about, You cant be serious. You
cant be serious. But they were.
When Clinton called DOMA a line that was
drawn that was to prevent going further,
Maddow asked if she would call it a defensive
action. Clinton apparently liked the term,

Houston voters to decide fate of pro-LGBT ordinance

Following a high-prole campaign that has grabbed national headlines, all
eyes will be on Houston next week for a vote on a pro-LGBT non-discrimination
ordinance and the outcome may set the stage for enacting similar protections
across the country.
The Houston Equal Rights Ordinance, which will gobefore voters on Tuesday as
Proposition 1, would prohibit discrimination in several categories, including sexual
orientation and gender identity, in the areas of employment, services, contracting
practices, housing and public accommodations.
Matt McTighe, executive director of Freedom for All Americans, is among the
supporters of the campaign to pass the ordinance and said his organizations
priority is ensuring the strongest possible turnout of voters in Houston.
Weve been on the ground providing communications and digital strategy, eld
organizing, and nancial support in collaboration with our partners at Houston
Unites, McTighe said. A victory for nondiscrimination protections in Houston
would rearm that people of all backgrounds are valued and welcome in Americas
biggest, most business-friendly cities.
The weeks leading up the vote have been contentious as opponents of the
ordinance have aired anti-trans ads stoking fears about transgender people using
the restroom consistent with their gender identity. Proponents of HERO have
repudiated that assertion by insisting untoward behavior in public restrooms
would still be punishable under the law.

College Park race, Fairfax ght draw attention

Slate backed by anti-LGBT group eyes takeover of school board

Gay attorney Patrick Wojahn, a City Council member in College Park, Md., whos running for
mayor of his city, is one of six openly gay candidates on the ballot on Nov. 3 for various elective
oces in the D.C.-area suburbs of Maryland and Virginia.
Although there are no LGBT candidates running for any of the 12 seats on the Fairfax County
School Board up for election on Tuesday, LGBT activists in Fairfax are campaigning hard for
the re-election of eight LGBT-supportive incumbents.
Activists say the eight incumbents and two other board members who are not seeking
re-election were instrumental in the approval over the past year of two important LGBTsupportive school policy initiatives.
Five of the eight LGBT-supportive incumbents and four other LGBT-supportive candidates
on the ballot are being challenged by a slate of candidates backed by the anti-LGBT Traditional
Values Coalition. The aim of the TVC, according to its leader Andrea Laerty, is a majority
takeover of the school board and a reversal of the LGBT-supportive measures approved by
the current board.
It will likely come down to who gets more of their voters out, and that is why it is vital that
our community and our allies take these races seriously, said Fairfax gay activist Joshua Israel.
In College Park, Wojahn is being challenged by fellow Council member Denise Mitchell. With
both candidates popular in their respective districts, most political observers are saying its
hard to predict who will emerge as the winner.
Supporters of the two say each would make history if they win. Wojahn would become
College Parks rst openly gay mayor and Mitchell would become the citys rst AfricanAmerican woman to become mayor.
Also running in College Park is gay Council member P.J. Brenan, whos vying for re-election
to a second term. Brenan, who holds a masters degree in business administration from
the University of Maryland and works for the federal government, is being challenged by
businessman and former Army satellite communications technician Daniel Blasberg Jr.
LGBT activists in Takoma Park, Md., meanwhile, have been extending their best wishes to
a popular gay ocial who isnt on the ballot this year. Takoma Park Mayor Bruce Williams,
whos completing his fourth term in oce, is retiring, a development that will result in the
progressive city no longer having an openly gay elected ocial for the rst time in 22 years.
Williams holds the distinction of being the rst openly gay elected ocial in Maryland, D.C.
and Virginia. He rst won election in 1993 to the Takoma Park City Council four years before
David Catania became D.C.s rst out gay Council member in 1997.
Another Maryland contest involving a gay elected ocial outside the D.C. metro area is
also attracting attention. Gay two-term Mayor Jim Ireton of the Eastern Shore city of Salisbury
surprised the citys political establishment in September when he announced he would run for
a seat on the City Council rather than seek re-election as mayor.
Ireton is running against local businessman Roger Mazzullo for the 4th District Council seat
in a race whose outcome is uncertain.
Back across the Potomac River in Virginia, gay State Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-Alexandria) and gay
State Del. Mark Sickles (D-Fairfax) are considered strong favorites to win re-election on Tuesday.
Gay rights attorney and talk show host Mark Levine is running unopposed for an open State
Delegate seat representing Alexandria after winning a hotly contested Democratic primary in June.
Rounding out the gay ticket in Northern Virginia is Alexandria City Council member Paul
Smedberg, an out gay Democrat who is running for a fth three-year term. Smedberg is one
of 11 candidates ve incumbents and six challengers running for six at-large City Council
seats under Alexandrias electoral system. Most political observers expect Smedberg to be
among the six top vote-getters to enable him to retain his seat.
In the Fairfax School Board election, LGBT activists and their allies are also campaigning
for two pro-LGBT candidates running in districts with open seats and for an LGBT-supportive
candidate running against one of the two incumbents not supportive on LGBT issues. The
other non-supportive incumbent is running unopposed.
The pro-LGBT incumbents seeking re-election to the boards three at-large seats are Ryan
McElveen, Ilryong Moon and Ted Velko, all of whom are Democrats. The LGBT-supportive
incumbents running for re-election to their district seats include Megan McLaughlin (Braddock
District), Janie Strauss (Dranesville District), Pay Hynes (Hunter Mill District), Tamara Derenak
Kaufax (Lee District), Karen Corbett Sanders (Mount Vernon District) and Sandy Evans (Mason
District). Each is running as a Democrat.

Brian T. Carney shared exciting news with us.
Carney, a Blade freelance writer, was recently
elected to a two-year term on the Steering
Committee for PennGALA (the Lesbian Gay
Bisexual Transgender Alumni Association of the
University of Pennsylvania). PennGALA connects
and represents LGBT Penn alumni and supports
the needs of students.
Carney graduated cum laude in 1984 with a
bachelors degree in economics from the Wharton
School, with a concentration in management and
a bachelors in urban studies from the College of
Arts and Sciences. He is a produced playwright
BRIAN T. CARNEY
and published author and holds an MFA in theatre
from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Carney has held senior
leadership positions at a number of Washington non-prots, including the
Washington Project for the Arts, the Advocacy Institute, the World Resources
Institute and, most recently, AIDS United. He serves as a judge for the Mentor
Capital Network Annual Business Plan Collaboration. He and his husband
Brian K. Long, a senior internal auditor for the State Department Federal
Credit Union, live in Wheaton, Md., with their cats.
David Franco has been nominated to the D.C.
Zoning Commission by Mayor Bowser. Franco
is a native Washingtonian and successful LGBT
businessman and developer. Recently Jack Evans,
Ward 2 Council member, asked Council Chair
Phil Mendelson to hold a conrmation hearing
for Franco. Mendelson has so far declined to
do so, citing concerns with Francos work as a
developer. But Mendelson has previously voted
for developers to serve on the commission, raising
questions about whether he is holding up the
nomination for other reasons, including a dispute
with the mayor. Franco is more than qualied to

serve and Mendelson should schedule a hearing
as soon as possible on his nomination.
Travis Wright was recently appointed deputy
chief of early childhood education by Chancellor
Kaya Henderson at D.C. Public Schools. Travis
graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University
of Tennessee, Knoxville with a bachelors in
College Scholars- Summa Cum Laude in 1998. I
met him in 1999 where he worked for a year as a
teacher at the Gage-Eckington Elementary School.
We had long conversations about how dicult it
was for a rst-year teacher in a class with many
special education students and no support from
the administration. Travis committed himself to
making things better here in D.C. for all children.
TRAVIS WRIGHT
He attended Harvard and earned his masters of
education emphasizing human development and psychology and went
on to earn his doctorate of education there in June 2006. His dissertation
was titled, Making It vs. Satisfaction: Well-Being and the Lives of Women
Raising Young Children in Poverty.
Travis took a leave from his position at the University of WisconsinMadison where he is assistant professor of Early Childhood Education.

Pintauro defends comments on oral sex HIV transmission

Former child star Danny Pintauro says

hes been unfairly criticized by some AIDS
activists for saying he thinks he became
infected with HIV through oral sex, and
that his decision to raise the subject
has drawn needed attention to HIV
prevention eorts.
In an interview with the Washington
Blade, Pintauro says he never made a
denitive statement that he was certain that
oral sex was the means through which he
became infected more than 12 years ago.
Everybody has their own version of
the truth. And Ive since said a couple of
things about how Im not 100 percent
sure, he said, recalling that he has long
reected on his intimate relations with a
male partner through whom he believes
he became infected.
You never know, he said, adding, I
spent the last 12 years sort of trying to
gure out what happened that day, and
thats my best guess.
Pintauro, 39, is well known for his
portrayal of Jonathan Bower on ABCs
1980s sitcom hit, Whos The Boss?
He made national headlines when he
disclosed just over a month ago on Oprah
Winfreys Where Are They Now show
that he was HIV positive and had been
addicted to crystal meth.
He has since announced he plans to
tour the country to generate a renewed
phase of AIDS activism and to deliver to
young people his personal message on
how he overcame his struggle with crystal
meth abuse and how staying away from
the drug scene can help people avoid HIV.
Last Saturday, Oct. 24, D.C.s WhitmanWalker Health presented Pintauro with its
annual Courage Award for a person with HIV
who has shown remarkable courage and
leadership in the ght against the disease.

Pintauro and Atlanta AIDS and womens
rights activist Dazon Dixon Diallo at the
conclusion of the organizations Walk
to End HIV, which drew close to 5,000
participants and was expected to raise
more than $600,000 for WhitmanWalkers local AIDS programs.
Pintauro and Diallo were among those
who led the annual Walk to End HIV through
the streets of downtown Washington.

The public response to Pintauros
disclosure on the Oprah program that
he was HIV positive appeared to be
overwhelmingly supportive.
But his comment less than a week
later on The View that he thought he
became infected through oral sex drew
immediate criticism from a number of
AIDS activist bloggers. Among other
things, they pointed out that no case
of oral transmission of HIV has been
scientically conrmed.
Experts on HIV transmission, including
researchers with the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, have
said transmission through oral sex is
theoretically possible but dicult if not
impossible to conrm because virtually
all of the data they have is based on
personal reporting of sexual practices by
people infected with HIV.
Receiving fellatio, giving or receiving
cunnilingus, and giving or receiving
anilingus carry little to no risk, the CDC
says in a statement on its website. The
highest oral sex risk is to individuals
performing fellatio on an HIV-infected
man, with ejaculation in the mouth, the
CDC statement says.
The statement adds, Even though oral
sex carries a lower risk of HIV transmission
than other sexual activities, the risk is not
zero. It is dicult to measure the exact
risk because people who practice oral
sex may also practice other forms of sex
during the same encounter.
Dr. Raymond Martins, WhitmanWalkers senior director of clinical
training and the organizations former
chief medical ocer, said his view based
on the voluminous data and scientic
studies on HIV transmission that hes
seen is that transmission through oral
sex is extremely unlikely.
According to Martins, some studies
based on patient interviews show that

the chance of becoming infected with HIV
by performing oral sex is less than one in
every 10,000 acts.
He notes that the anatomy of the
mouth, unlike the anal canal, has a
thicker lining of protective cells, making
it much harder for the virus to get close
enough to either blood in the mouth or
white blood cells in the mouth where the
virus could enter.
And then at the same time, the saliva
is protective, he said. It doesnt allow
HIV to be as viable.
Added Martins: In the anal canal the
lining is very thin and so it tears easily
and so a lot of times HIV comes in direct
contact with blood or with the white blood
cells that are directly below the surface.
Martins and CDC experts have said
due to the easier transmission through
the anal canal, people engaging in anal
intercourse should always use a condom
for protection.
Pintauro has said since coming out as
HIV positive that he may have had sores
in his mouth due to his abuse of crystal
meth, which can cause mouth ulcers, and
that could have facilitated his becoming
infected through oral sex.
Martins said the studies showing that
the risk of infection from oral sex with
someone who is HIV positive is less than
one in 10,000 must have included people
who have had abrasions in their mouths.
It seems not to increase the risk
dramatically if at all, he said, even when
ejaculation occurs in the mouth.
Pintauro, while not disputing data
showing oral transmission is unlikely,
points to the CDC statement saying oral
transmission is possible.
Yeah the chances are incredibly slim,
I admit that, he told the Blade. But youd
be surprised about the number of people
who contacted me in the last week and a
half saying that thats the same way that

they believe theyve contracted it, he said.
And you have to remember that Im
throwing meth into the picture. So any of
these statistics are going to change or any
of the chances are going to be dierent
when you put in that factor that Ive been
doing that for God knows how many
hours, he said.
Asked if he was surprised by the
criticism over his statement about oral
transmission, Pintauro said he was not.
You cant go into doing something
like this and expect to get 100 percent
in support, he said. But I was a little
surprised because the backlash was
coming from the people that I wanted to
become these AIDS activists mostly.
And I was surprised because I didnt
expect that the negativity would come from
within the community, he said. I thought
if anything it would come from outside the
community where stigma is based.
He said he was also taken aback when
some of the AIDS activist critics accused him
of being uniformed on HIV transmission
and the scientic data on HIV.
And Im saying, now wait a minute.
Why dont you go and look at the CDCs
website and look at the fact that they say
that it is possible all be it very dicult,
said Pintauro. I feel like youre the one
whos uniformed, right?
Added Pintauro: But the idea is sort
of to get past that and get to the bigger
issues and get to the broader topics that
we need to focus on. And lets get there.
Its time to skip that and talk about taking
better care of each other.
Pintauro came out as gay in 1997, a
development that also drew widespread
coverage in the entertainment media.
Last year he and his partner, Will Tabares,
were married.

Intersex person sues

over passport denial
Lambda Legal on Monday led
a federal lawsuit against the State
Department on behalf of an intersex
person who was denied a passport
because they do not identify as male
or female.
The lawsuit notes that Dana Alix
Zzyym, a resident of Fort Collins,
Colo., who is the associate director of
the U.S. aliate of the Organization
Intersex International, applied for a
passport in September 2014 in order
to travel to Mexico City this week for
an international conference that will
focus on intersex-specic issues.

Aairs conrmed the gender listed on
the birth certicate as unknown. The
State Department said Zzyym could receive a passport with a male or female
gender marker or withdraw the application.
Zzyym on Dec. 19, 2014, provided additional documentation to the Colorado
Passport Agency for the State Department to prove their intersex identity. This
second application was denied 10 days later.
Zzyym on Feb. 26 requested that the State Department reconsider its decision.
An April 10 letter said this petition had been denied.
The lawsuit names Secretary of State John Kerry and Sherman Portell,
director of the Colorado Agency for the State Department, as defendants. It
further alleges the State Department violated the Fifth Amendment of the U.S.
Constitution and the Administrative Prodecure Act by denying Zzyym a passport
that accurately reects their gender.
When I was a child, I had no say in what was done to me in order to make
me t in some acceptable category, said Zzyym in a press release that Lambda
Legal released on Monday. I continue to suer the consequences of those
decisions today. But, as an adult, I can take a stand. I am not male, I am not
female, I am intersex, and I shouldnt have to choose a gender marker for my
ocial U.S. identity document that isnt me.
The State Department on Monday declined to comment on Zzyyms lawsuit.
Lambda Legal in its press release notes Australia, India, Malta, Nepal and New
Zealand are among the countries that issue passports without female or male
gender markers. The International Civil Aviation Organization, a U.N. agency that
sets standards for documents used for international travel, recognizes the X
gender marker.
Lambda Legal announced its lawsuit on Intersex Awareness Day, which is
designed to raise awareness of intersex issues around the world.

Dems seek to lift Social Security penalty

A group of 121 members of Congress led by gay Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) in the
House and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) in the Senate are calling on the Social
Security Administration to lift penalties on gay couples who were over-payed benets
following the historic rulings from the Supreme Court on marriage.
In a letter dated Oct. 26, the lawmaker all Democrats call on Social Security
Administration Acting Commissioner Carolyn Colvin and U.S. Attorney General Loretta
Lynch to take action to administer benets fairly to all individuals.
We are concerned to hear that, for some time after the Supreme Courts Windsor
decision, SSA continued to issue benets to Supplemental Security Income recipients

in same-sex marriages as though these individuals were single, and that for some
SSI recipients, SSA is still doing so, the letter says. Because benets for unmarried
individuals are higher than those for married individuals, SSAs failure to update its
policies resulted in overpayments.
According to the letter, the Social Security Administration sent out overpayment
notices to recollect the money even though they were overpayed due to SSAs delayed
implementation of the law.
The letter calls on the Obama administration to issue a blanket waiver for recovery
of overpayment so that couples who inadvertently continued to receive higher benets
after the Supreme Courts decisions against the Defense of Marriage Act would be able
to keep that money automatically.
The lawmakers ask the Social Security Administration to respond by Nov. 18 with
information on how the agency is identifying aected recipients and eorts to update
its systems so benets are administered fairly.
As the letter notes, litigation led by Justice in Aging and the New England-based
Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders known as Held v. Colvin seeks to compel the
administration to drop the penalty on these overpayments. A district court dismissed
the lawsuit on the basis that administrative remedies arent yet exhausted, but the
litigation is on appeal before the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
No Republicans signed the letter. Warrens oce didnt respond to a request for
comment on whether any of the organizers engaged in any Republican outreach.
William B.J. Jarrett, a Social Security spokesperson, said the agency cannot comment
on the letter as a result of pending litigation.
Social Security is committed to treating all Americans fairly, with dignity and respect,
Jarrett said. We cannot comment as this issue is the subject of active litigation. Acting
Commissioner Colvin will respond to the letter from the members of Congress at the
appropriate time.
The Justice Department didnt immediately respond to the Washington Blades
request to comment on the letter.

Calif. sets process for inmate gender reassignment

California has instituted a new review process for transgender inmates seeking
gender reassignment surgery that advocates are hailing as historic and a potential
model for the nation.
The policy, established this week by the California Correctional Health Care Services,
sets a formal process for transgender people seeking taxpayer-funded gender
reassignment surgery a procedure endorsed by major medical and psychological
organizations.
Kris Hayashi, executive director of Transgender Law Center, commended the change
in a statement and said other states should look to the policy forguidance.
By adopting this groundbreaking policy, California has set a model for the rest of
the country and ensured transgender people in prison can access life-saving care when
they need it, Hayashi said.
The change was enacted after lawsuits led by the Oakland-based Transgender Law
Center on behalf of Michelle Norsworthy, a transgender inmate whos on parole and
was incarcerated for second-degree murder at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione, Calif.,
and Shiloh Quine, another transgender inmate serving time at the same facility for rstdegree murder, kidnapping and robbery.
Norsworthy, who was initially granted gender reassignment surgery as a result of
court order, but later denied the procedure after the state appealed the decision, was
among those commending the change in a statement.
I suered for decades as my identity, my medical needs, and my very humanity
were denied by the people and system responsible for my care, Norsworthy said. I
am beyond proud to have been part of the movement to make this policy happen, and
I know it will change and save the lives of so many women still ghting for survival in
mens prisons.
Flor Bermudez, the Transgender Law Centers detention project director, credited her
organizations lawsuit withbringing the change into eect.
We are thrilled that our work with Michelle and Shiloh brought about this historic
change in California prison policy, and Transgender Law Center looks forward to working
with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to ensure transgender
people in prison arent denied medical care, commissary items, or safe housing just
because of who they are, Bermudez said.
But Bermudez added more work is needed to ensure humane treatment of
transgender prisoners within the California corrections system.
There are absolutely some details, such as compliance with the Prison Rape
Elimination Act and the qualications of the experts making the assessment, which
require more work and consideration, and we hope to continue that discussion with
CDCR, she said.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi
(D-Calif.) addressed last week the record
number of transgender murders this year,
saying the violence is heartbreaking
and its important to listen to the people
most aected by it.
Pelosi made the remarks during her
weekly news conference at the U.S.
Capitol in response to a question from
the Washington Blade on what should be
done about the spike in anti-trans violence
following the recent deathof Zella Ziona,
whose murder many are counting as the
21st transgender murder in 2015.
We can pass a law, we can help to break
down barriers in peoples minds, Pelosi
said. Now we have to get to their hearts,
but it is heartbreaking to hear of violence
against anyone, but the vulnerability of
our transgender community.
The California Democrat referenced
the Matthew Shepard & James Byrd Jr.
Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which she
said passed over objections when she
was speaker in 2009 with a prohibition
against bias-motivated violence based on
gender identity.
At that time, there had been some
resistance I dont know where but
people would say to me, You can pass this
hate crimes bill in a second if you didnt
include transgender, Pelosi said. And I
said, Well, Im never going to pass it in a
million years if we dont include transgender
because its important for it to be inclusive,
and transgender people are probably the
most in need of a hate crimes bill.
It should be noted Pelosi in 2007 made
a dierent decision with the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act, bringing to
the oor a bill without gender identity
protections when former Rep. Barney
Frank said only a gay-only version of the
legislation would pass the House. Frank
and Pelosi later committed to transinclusive legislation.
Pelosi said she recently had meetings
with the LGBT community one in
Washington State, one in San Francisco
on a number of issues and took note of
the introduction in July of the Equality Act,
legislation she co-sponsors that would
amend federal civil rights laws to include
LGBT people.
We want to listen specically to the
transgender community to hear what
some of their suggestions might be as we
go forward, as we see this sadness, Pelosi
said. But we always want to listen to the
people who are most aected by it.

enforce the law we have to listen to the
community, because theyre, sadly, on
the front line of this.
White House Deputy Principal Press
Secretary Eric Schultz echoed the dismay
over the recent transgender killings
when asked by the Washington Blade
about whether the spike in transgender
murders amounts to a national crisis.
I saw the heart-wrenching report out
of Baltimore that you mentioned, and I
think its fair to say that the thoughts and
prayers of those of us at the White House
are with the family, Schultz said.
But Schultz said he doesnt have any new
initiative to unveil that would confront
the spike in violence at a national level.
I dont have sort of new legislative
or ocial reviews to announce today,
Schultz said. Obviously, the presidents
record on this is well-known.
The ocials made the comments one
day after Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) made
a public a letter seeking answers from
the Justice Department and the FBI on
reporting and monitoring of transgender
murders and the extent to which the
federal government is working with local
authorities on the issue.
Pelosi endorsed the letter in a response
to a follow-up question, saying in response
to whether she thinks its contents are a
good idea, Sure. Always. Yes.
Schultz said he couldnt respond to the
letter directly because hes not aware of
it, but added Obama broadly believes
making information public is a good thing.
I will say generally speaking the
president has been very strong in his
advocacy in increased transparency and
increased data, Schultz said. I know
thats something we worked very hard on
both at the Justice Department in terms
of the law enforcement arena, but also
at other areas of the administration. So,
generally speaking, the president believes
the more information, the better.
In his letter dated Oct. 21, Franken calls

on U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch and
FBI Director James Comey to take action.
I write to express serious concern
about the alarming number of homicides
and violent crimes targeting transgender
and gender nonconforming people,
Franken wrote. I strongly urge the U.S.
Department of Justice to work with state
and local authorities in the investigation
and prosecution of these incidents, and to
redouble its eorts to ensure the accurate
reporting of all bias-motivated crimes.
Franken noted the Ziona case in his
letter. The Washington Blade reported
investigators believe she may have been
shotafter she approached the suspect in
public and embarrassed him in front of
his friends. A prosecutor told the Blade
subsequently that Ziona and the suspect
were romantically involved.
Taking note that police and some
media reports misidentied Ziona as
male, Franken said federal law doesnt
require state or local authorities to report
incidents of anti-trans violence. The
senator calls for an update on the Justice
Departments work on tracking biasmotivated crime, saying underreporting
anti-trans violence obscures the threats
many of our citizens endure every day.
I applaud the Department of Justice and
the FBI for their enforcement eorts to date,
as well as the Departments work to train
federal, state, and local law enforcement
ocers to respond appropriately and
eectively to reports of bias-motivated

violence, Franken said. However, accurate
data on the frequency and severity of attacks
is needed in order to direct prevention and
enforcement eorts to the jurisdictions
most in need of assistance.
The senator also called on the Justice
Department to work closely with local
authorities to investigate and prosecute
hate crimes against transgender people
as prescribed by the federal hate crimes
law signed by President Obama in 2009.
There are indications that distrust in law
enforcement among LGBT communities,
and inaccurate or disrespectful reporting
regarding transgender victims, have
been barriers to investigations, Franken
writes. The Department should develop
a model policy for law enforcement
agencies on interactions with LGBT and
gender nonconforming individuals and
guidance on public communications
regarding crimes against members of the
transgender community.
Michael Silverman, executive director
of the New York-based Transgender
Legal Defense & Education Fund,
applauded Franken in a statement to
the Washington Blade for calling on the
Obama administration to take action.
Measures must be put in place to track
anti-transgender hate crimes at the state
and local level,Silverman said. We urge
implementation of a model policy to help
law enforcement treat transgender people
with the dignity and respect they deserve,
and to communicate with the public
appropriately about transgender people
when they are the victims of hate crimes.

The rst openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL has endorsed a measure
that aims to prohibit anti-LGBT discrimination in Houston and is set to come
before city voters on Nov. 3.
Michael Sam, a Galveston, Texas, native who gained national attention after
being drafted into the NFL, announced last week his support for the Houston
Equal Rights Ordinance, or HERO, in a fundraising email from HRC.
I know rst-hand what it feels like to be unwelcome to live an open and
authentic life in a place where you can be ostracized or even discriminated against
for simply being yourself, Sam says. Thats why as a Texas native I was thrilled
when Houston passed the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO) last year...and
equally disappointed when opponents petitioned for its repeal this year. Now its
on the ballot and its up to all of us to protect Houstonians from discrimination.
Anti-trans forces are airing fear-mongering advertisements about transgender
people in the restrooms aimed at encouraging voters to reject the measure, also
known as Proposition 1.
Ive seen what the opposition is doing and its revolting launching ugly ads
insinuating LGBT people pose a danger to the community, Sam says. Theyre out in
full force, trying to scare fair-minded Texans into voting against their LGBT neighbors.

U.S. ambassador to Chile praises gay colleagues

to Chile Michael Hammer told the
Washington Blade during an interview
last week that the U.S. continues to show
global leadership in the promotion of
LGBT rights.
Hammer noted during an Oct. 22
interview at the U.S. Embassy in Santiago
that six openly gay ambassadors
currently represent the country overseas
in the Dominican Republic, Spain and
Andorra, Denmark, Vietnam, Australia
and the Organization for Security and
Cooperation in Europe.
This is a giant leap forward in terms of
making a statement that LGBT folks are
just as qualied and just as able to be
wonderful representatives of the United
States, Hammer told the Blade.

that

some pretty ugly reactions from Cardinal
Nicols de Jess Lpez Rodrguez of
the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo and
others in the predominantly Roman
Catholic country.
The United States stands rst on
important values, equal rights being
among them, Hammer told the Blade.
Hammer also noted the State
Departments eorts to ensure samesex partners have equal rights within
the Foreign Service. He declined to
specically comment on the decision to
no longer oer domestic partner benets
to unmarried gay couples.
The State Departments been working
hard to get to the appropriate place,
said Hammer, responding to the Blades
question about the aforementioned
benets. In doing so were providing
leadership and by having openly gay
ambassadors serving makes it very clear
where the United States stands. The fact
we have very successful ambassadors in
this group is again further validation that
its not only the right thing to do, but the
smart thing to do.

U.S. ambassador to Chile.
Hammer described Chiles leadership
on global LGBT issues to the Blade as
quite remarkable.
Chile co-sponsored a resolution against
anti-LGBT violence and discrimination that
the U.N. Human Rights Council ratied
in September 2014. The South American
country, along with the U.S., in August cohosted the rst-ever LGBT-specic U.N.
Security Council meeting that focused on
the Islamic States persecution of Syrian and
Iraqi men accused of committing sodomy.
Chile last November became the
rst Latin American country to join the
Global Equality Fund, a public-private
partnership designed to promote LGBT
rights around the world that the State
Department manages with the U.S.
Agency for International Development.
Special U.S. Envoy for the Human Rights
of LGBTI Persons Randy Berry in June
traveled to Santiago where he met with
Chilean advocates and embassy staers.
Before I arrived (in Chile) I heard a lot
about a very conservative society (that is)
predominantly Catholic, Hammer told
the Blade. In terms of the issue of LGBT
rights and equality they were much more
progressive than I anticipated them being.
Hammer spoke with the Blade on the
same day Chiles law that allows same-sex
couples to enter into civil unions took eect.
Were marking that historic moment,
he said. Thats not to say that it hasnt
been a very long struggle.
Hammer told the Blade that the March
2012 murder of Daniel Zamudio who
was attacked by a group of self-described
neo-Nazis in a Santiago park because he
was gay galvanized Chilean LGBT rights
advocates and the countrys politicians.

Then-President Sebastin Piera in the
summer of 2012 signed an LGBT-inclusive
hate crimes and anti-discrimination bill
known as the Zamudio Law that
had languished in the Chilean Congress
for seven years. A measure that would
allow trans people in the South American
country to legally change their name and
sex without sex-reassignment surgery
remains in front of lawmakers.
President Michelle Bachelet publicly
supports both the trans rights bill and
marriage rights for same-sex couples.

Melet marched alongside Hammer in
Santiagos annual Pride march that took
place one day after the U.S. Supreme
Court ruled in the Obergefell case that
same-sex couples have the right to marry
throughout the United States.
There was euphoria there and a lot of
love I have to say for the United States
among the people that were there,
Hammer told the Blade.
Hammer nevertheless said the Chilean
government acknowledges LGBT Chileans
continue to face inequality and discrimination.
They have obviously, with the civil
unions, made a very important step,
he said. They have work to do...the
government talks about the need for
work to be done.
The embassy in August gave Fundacin
Iguales, a Chilean LGBT advocacy group, a
$22,782 grant to support what Hammer
described as civil society eorts to
protect the rights of transgender people.
Hammer told the Blade that the
feedback he receives from Chileans about
the embassys work in support of LGBT
rights has been overwhelmingly positive.
He conceded some of the comments on
the embassys Facebook are nevertheless
just uncomfortable to read.
No institution or political party or
group has come and protested to us as
an embassy or to me as an ambassador,
said Hammer. Publicly its been more a

question of supporting and applauding
our support for this eort.
Hammer was among the ocials who
attended an annual thanksgiving Mass
known as Te Deum on Sept. 18 that
coincides with Chiles Independence Day.
Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati, the archbishop
of Santiago, presided over the annual
event that took place roughly a week
after a Chilean newspaper published a
series of private emails between him and
his predecessor, Cardinal Francisco Javier
Errzuriz, that show they conspired to
block a gay mans nomination to a papal
sex abuse commission.
Juan Carlos Cruz, a U.S. citizen living
in Philadelphia, is among the hundreds
of people who Rev. Fernando Karadima
sexually abused over more than three
decades at a Santiago church. Hammer
noted that Ezzati issued a mea culpa
during the Mass over the way some of
the things were reported in relation to
the leaked emails.
Its not an issue weve become involved
in, Hammer told the Blade. We follow it
in a sense because you also learn from
the reaction of people to these emails...
its one of outrage generally.
The Blade interviewed Hammer as
former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
testied before the House Benghazi
Committee about the 2012 attack that
left then-U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris
Stevens and three other Americans dead.
Anytime something like this happens
you get shaken by it, said Hammer, who
worked with Clinton at the time the attack
against the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi
took place. Theres a great deal of hurt
associated with that.
Everybody that I know of, and certainly
that serves as an ambassador takes very
seriously their responsibilities to keep
their people and Americans safe, he
added. Yet on occasion we have to be
doing work that, again, is dangerous. We
understand that risk.

The culture rapidly changed so that
now what was totally anathema to
political forces they have ceded, they
no longer are ghting except on a local
level and rear guard action, Clinton
added. And with the U.S. Supreme Court
decision, its settled.
Clintons chief rival for the Democratic
nomination, Sen. Bernard Sanders, during
his remarks Saturday at the JeersonJackson dinner in Des Moines, Iowa, made
a veiled criticism of Clinton over DOMA.
Sanders recalled being a member of
the U.S. House at the time and among
the 57 lawmakers in the Republicancontrolled chamber to vote against
DOMA, which was signed into law by
President Bill Clinton.
That was not a political, easy vote,
Sanders said. Now today, some are
trying to rewrite history by saying they
voted for one anti-gay law to stop
something worse. Thats not the case.
There was a small minority in the House
opposed to discrimination against our
gay brothers and sisters, and I am proud
that I was one of those members.
In his prepared remarks, Sanders was
supposed to say, Not everybody held
that position in 1996, but he dropped
that line in favor of saying he was proud
to vote against DOMA.
The Vermont senator also identied
gay people as among the minorities he
wouldnt throw under the bus if elected
president another possible reference
to Clinton and her lack of support for
marriage equality until 2013.
I will not abandon any segment of
American society whether youre gay or
black or Latino or poor or working class
just because it is politically expedient at a
given time, Sanders said.
Sanders wasnt the only one upset
with Clintons recollections of the DOMA
ght. A number of gay rights activists
took to Twitter to say Clinton engaged in
historic revisionism during her interview
with Maddow. Many of those activists
also tempered their objections by saying
Clinton is generally doing right on LGBT
rights during her campaign.
David Mixner, a gay rights activist who
once supported Bill Clinton before the
two had a falling out over Dont Ask,
Dont Tell, urged LGBT people to reject
the explanation of DOMA oered by the
Democratic presidential candidate.

passage of DOMA nearly two decades
ago, Hillary Clinton believes the law
was discriminatory and both she and
President Clinton urged that it be
overturned, Fallon said. As president,
Hillary Clinton will continue to ght to
secure full and equal rights for LGBT
Americans who, despite all our progress,
can still get married on a Saturday and
red on a Monday just because of who
they are and who they love.
The notion that DOMA was signed
into law to stave o a U.S. constitutional
amendment has been articulated before
by Hillary Clinton during an interview last
year on National Public Radio. Bill Clinton
oered that rationale for DOMA in 2009
during Netroots Nation when confronted
by LGBT activist Lane Hudson.
We were attempting at the time, in
a very reactionary Congress, to head
o an attempt to send a constitutional
amendment banning gay marriage to the
states, Bill Clinton said. And if you look
at the 11 referenda much later in 2004,
in the election which the Republicans
put on the ballot to try to get the base
vote for President Bush up, I think its
obvious that something had to be done
to try to keep the Republican Congress
from presenting that.
Nowhere in Bill Clintons 1996 signing
statement of DOMA does he say anything
explicit about him agreeing to the legislation
to stop a Federal Marriage Amendment.

Instead, the former president talked
about a states right to set its own policy
on same-sex marriage, urged passage of
the Employment Non-Discrimination Act
and maintained DOMA shouldnt provide
an excuse for discrimination, violence or
intimidation against any person on the
basis of sexual orientation.
At least one prominent Democrat
came to Clintons defense this week.
Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) told the
Washington Blade she believes the
account oered by Clinton that DOMA
helped stop passage of a Federal
Marriage Amendment is correct.
Well, as I recall, it was a very ugly
time, Mikulski said, recalling that now
Democratic presidential candidate Clinton
was at the time in the White House as the
rst lady. I agree with Sen. Clinton.
After saying she didnt want to get into
the debate, Mikulski oered an account
of the Senate vote in 1996 that squares
with Clintons narrative.
What I believe [is] it was an ugly
time, we took an action that was limited
and had a lot of problems with it, but it
did stop a constitutional amendment,
Mikulski said. Now, were in a new
day, theres a new energy, theres new
legislation and I think were moving to a
very good place.
Asked by the Blade whether her yes
vote on DOMA in 1996 was informed by
a fear of a constitutional amendment,
Mikulski cited two reasons for the vote.
I was concerned about two things:
I was worried about the constitutional
amendment
and
real
religious
exemptions had not yet been worked
out, she said. There were a lot of phony
ones oating around.
The clash over DOMA highlights
a surprising new trend: Democratic
presidential candidates ghting to see
who can be more LGBT-friendly. Political
observers say this election marks the
rst time at least to this degree
mainstream Democratic hopefuls have
criticized one another on LGBT rights in
a high-prole capacity.
Larry Sabato, a political scientist at the
University of Virginia, said he couldnt
immediately recall Democratic sniping
on LGBT rights occurring in earlier races.
Whatever the case, this is signicant
because LGBT rights, including marriage
equality, are now such a fundamental part
of the Democratic platform that candidates
argue about which one is most fervent in
support, Sabato said. Its inconceivable
that someone could win the Democratic
nomination without being enthusiastic
about gay rights. This is a massive sea
change even from most of the rst decade
of the 21st century, and a complete
transformation from the 20th century.
To be fair, Democratic presidential

candidates
have
dierentiated
themselves on LGBT rights in the past.
In 2008, Clinton supported repeal of only
Section 3 of DOMA while then-candidate
Barack Obama wanted to repeal all of it.
In 2007, the slew of candidates
seeking the Democratic nomination
oered diering views in a Logo forum
moderated by the Human Rights
Campaign. U.S. Sen. John Edwards went
further than most candidates by saying
he would look for unilateral action to
undo Dont Ask, Dont Tell.
But none of those candidates publicly
attacked others at a high-prole event
like the Jeerson-Jackson dinner.
Dan Pinello, whos gay and a political
scientist at the John Jay College of
Criminal Justice, said Sanders attack on
Clinton for not supporting gay rights in a
timely manner is unprecedented.
In caucuses and primaries, candidates
compete over their partys base,
Pinello said. Since LGBT voters support
Democratic
presidential
nominees
over their Republican rivals about 75
percent of the time, Sanders is trying to
position himself closer to that base in the
primary/caucus process just as Clinton
has attacked Sanders over his failure to
support gun-reform legislation, in the
hope of wooing NRA opponents to her
side. So its political tit for tat.
In the past, Democrats have also been
uncomfortable attacking Republicans for
opposing LGBT rights as the GOP has
used them to its advantage as a wedge
issue, although that changed as well. In
2012, Obama took Republican nominee
Mitt Romney to task for his support ofa
U.S. constitutional amendment banning
same-sex marriage.
Nowadays on the Republican side,
some contenders like Rick Santorum,
Mike Huckabee and Bobby Jindal
continue to pledge anti-LGBT policy
initiatives; others like Jeb Bush and John
Kasich continue to oppose same-sex
marriage, but say its time to move on
after the recent LGBT victories.
Pinello said squabblesover LGBT rights
in the Democratic Party are good for the
LGBT community.
Any public airing of favorable positions
on LGBT policy issues ultimately benets
our community. The more such coverage,
the better, Pinello said. The closet door
is ung open just a bit wider each time,
which is always a good thing.
Sabato also said LGBT people stand to
benet from the attention to LGBT rights
among Democratic presidential candidates.
Despite the publics cynicism about
candidate promises, studies have
shown that those elected try and usually
succeed in following through on their
most emphasized pledges, Sabato said.

All eyes on Houston as ordinance vote nears

the actions of the anti-LGBT campaign
known as Campaign for Houston.
Polls have shown the ordinance

support.
High-prole
endorsements in recent days have come
from Housing & Urban Development
Secretary Julian Castro as well as therst
openly gay National Football League
draft pick Michael Sam. An endorsement
was sought from gay icon Beyonce, but
she has yet to weigh in on the measure.
According to the Houston Chronicle,
the pro-LGBT Houston Unites has
raised almost $3 million to pass HERO
since August and 75 percent of donors
are Houston residents. The anti-LGBT
Campaign for Houston, on the other
hand, reportedly listed 45 contributions
and raised more than $62,000.
The ordinance in Houston isnt
the only contest of interest to LGBT
votersonElection Day even though its
an o-year election.
In Virginia, Democrats are one seat shy
of taking control of the state Senate. On
Tuesday, the party stands a shot of winning
the majority, which would mean the party
would control both chambers of the
legislature and the governors mansion.
Under the leadership of Virginia Gov. Terry
McAulie, LGBT advocates are hopeful for
that outcome to push forward long sought
pro-LGBT legislation in the state, including
statewide non-discrimination protections.
In Mississippi, Joce Pritchett, who
was one of the plaintis in the marriage
equality lawsuit in the state, is running to
become state auditor. Her victory would
make her the rst openly LGBT person
elected to statewide oce in the South.
In Salt Lake City, lesbian candidate Jackie
Biskupski is challenging incumbent proLGBT Mayor Ralph Becker. If Biskupski is
successful, shell be the chief executive of
the city at the heart of the Mormon Church,
which has an anti-gay reputation for its role
in opposing marriage equality.
Other openly gay candidates seeking
the oce of mayor this election are Ginny
Deerin in Charleston, S.C.; Ginny Foat
in Palm Springs, Calif..; and Ken Siver in
Southeld, Mich.
In Columbus, Ohio, Shannon Hardin,
whos gay, is seeking an at-large seat on
the city council after being appointed to
the position last year. In Houston, openly
gay Lane Lewis, chair of the Harris County
Democratic Party, is seeking an at-large
seat on the city council.
Also in Salt Lake City, Derek Kitchen,
the named plainti in the lawsuit that
brought marriage equality to Utah, is
seeking a seat on the city council. In
Indianapolis, openly gay small business

owner Zach Adamson is also running for
re-election tothe city council.
In another race in Utah, Sophia HawesTingey, a transgender software engineer and
Navy veteran, is challenging an incumbent
for a seat on the Midvale City Council. Her
victory would make her the rst openly
transgender elected ocial in Utah.
Although the governors race in
Kentucky doesnt have a unique LGBT
relevance in and of itself, the anti-gay
National Organization for Marriage has

endorsed Republicans Matt Bevin for
governor and Whitney Westereld for
attorney general. The candidates are
seeking to defeat Democratic incumbents
Gov. Steve Beshear and Attorney Jack
Conway. Beshear has been a target of
Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis in her
eorts to enforce a no licenses policy
in her oce following the U.S. Supreme
Court decision in favor of nationwide
same-sex marriage.
Houston Mayor ANNISE PARKER has

advocated on behalf of the citys pro-LGBT
non-discrimination ordinance.
Dedication of Kameny memorial set for Veterans Day

A soon-to-be-installed memorial headstone honoring gay rights pioneer Frank Kameny will be dedicated on Nov. 11 at
Congressional Cemetery as part of a Veterans Day service for LGBT veterans, according to an announcement by the D.C.
Center for the LGBT Community, which is sponsoring the event.
In addition to honoring Kameny and his role as a World War II combat veteran, the observance will honor the late Vietnam
War veteran Leonard Matlovich. Through Kamenys assistance, Matlovich in 1975 became the rst active duty military service
member to challenge the militarys ban on gays.
Matlovichs decision to come out as gay following Kamenys coaching is credited with launching the rst formal ght against
the longstanding ban on LGBT service members.
The Kameny headstone will be installed along with a footstone bearing the expression Kameny coined in 1968, Gay is
Good, at a site located just behind the memorial headstone and gravesite for Matlovich, which was installed at the time of
Matlovichs death in 1988.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Aairs gave nal approval of the memorial marker headstone for Kameny earlier this
month and was expected to deliver the stone to Congressional Cemetery the rst week of November. The event marks the end
of four years of disagreements and lawsuits over Kamenys estate, his remains and how to honor the gay pioneer.
Michael Bedwell, a longtime friend of both Kameny and Matlovich who is helping to organize the event, noted that Kameny
served in the 58th Armored Infantry Battalion, 8th Armored Division, 9th Army in Germany before he was honorably discharged
from the service in 1946.
The Nov. 11 dedication event at Congressional Cemetery is part of an annual Veterans Day tribute to LGBT veterans that the
D.C. Centers military project has organized in recent years.
Among those scheduled to speak at the event is Gordon O. Tanner, the openly gay General Counsel for the U.S. Department
of the Air Force. Tanner, an attorney who also serves as the Air Forces chef legal and ethics ocial, is a retired Air Force colonel
who had been assigned to the Judge Advocate General Corps Reserves.
Held in honor of the LGBT men and women who have served the U.S. as soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, and coast
guardsmen, this years event will be held on Nov. 11, 2015 at 11:00 a.m., the D.C. Center announcement says.

Academy drag group disbands after 54-year run
The Academy of Washington, D.C.s oldest continuously operating LGBT organization known for its extravaganza drag
pageants, including its annual Miss Gaye America and Mr. and Miss Gaye USA contests, announced on Tuesday that its board
has voted to disband the group.
As many of you have been aware, the Academy of Washington has been on life support for several years, three of the
groups board members said in an email message addressed to Academy members and friends.
We are unable to get contestants for contests such as Miss Gaye America (DC), Mr. and Miss Gaye USA (DC), and Zodiac,
the email says. The audience is not there either for us. For the last two functions, we have lost money on the event and have
operated at a loss of the 2015 calendar year, it says.
Board member and treasurer Frank Taylor told the Washington Blade that Academy ocials attribute diminishing interest
in the groups events, in part, to the changing interests of the LGBT communitys younger generation, whose preoccupation
with social media and the Internet may have made them less likely to pay an admission fee for a drag event.
Taylor said the Academys longstanding role in making drag shows a popular part gay culture in Washington may ironically
have been a factor in the groups demise.
The lack of attendance for our events may be because there are many more avenues for drag shows, he said. Now, every
gay bar has a drag show.
Mark Meinke, former president of D.C. Rainbow History Project, said the Academy was founded in the summer of 1961 by
Alan Kress and was operated since 1973 by Carl Rizzi, who was known by his drag name Mame Dennis.
Rizzi died in February. Taylor said the Academy recently held a celebration of life ceremony in Rizzis honor.
The email message sent to members this week says the vote by the board of directors to disband the group included an
ocial resolution to dissolve the groups corporate entity. Doing resulted in the cancellation of all its Washington functions.

In a case that impacts thousands of children in Maryland born into families

headed by same-sex couples, Baltimore-based FreeState Legal has asked
Marylands Court of Appeals to review a decision by lower courts denying legal
parentage to a person who raised a child from birth with their same-sex spouse.
In the case of Conover v. Conover, FreeState Legal represents Michael Conover, a
transgender man. Before Conovers gender transition, he and his female partner
had a child by articial insemination of his partner. They married after marriage
equality was legally recognized for same-sex couples, but the lower courts have
refused to recognize Conovers parentage of their child. As a result, Conover has
been unable to see his child for more than two years.
This heartbreaking case is about whether Maryland courts will give equal
protection to the parent-child relationships of children born to same-sex couples,
and whether marriages between same-sex couples are truly equal under
Maryland law, said FreeState Legals deputy director and managing attorney, Jer
Welter, who represents Michael Conover, in a statement. For marriage equality
to have real meaning, the families formed by same-sex married couples must
have the same legal protection as the families formed by opposite-sex couples.
Before his gender transition, Michael Conover was in a committed same-sex
relationship for nearly a decade with Brittany Eckel. In 2009, before marriage
equality for same-sex couples was recognized in Maryland, Conover and Eckel
decided to have a child together by articial insemination. They chose an
anonymous sperm donor on the basis of physical resemblance to Conover,
and when Eckel gave birth to their son Jaxon, the child was given Conovers last

name. A few months later, Conover and Eckel married in nearby Washington

The Frederick Center has run an LGBTQ weekly youth group since 2012
that has serviced hundreds in Central Maryland. Now the Center is looking for
additional volunteers who are parents, allies or LGBTQ adults over age 18 to

A three-year $2.1 million National Institutes of Health grant is funding the
research. Researchers will be looking at protective factors, called resiliencies,
which are helping keep some men with HIV healthy and ways these practices
may be useful to other men, the article said.
The project will regularly survey 1,850 HIV-positive and -negative men who are
participating in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study, which is an ongoing research
study that has enrolled thousands of men in Baltimore, Chicago, Pittsburgh and
Los Angeles over the past 30 years. The Pitt Mens Study is the Pittsburgh arm of
the study, which is being led by Ron Stall, director of the Center for LGBT Health
Research at Pitt, the Times reports.
LGBT-specic teen drug resource released

WASHINGTON A new publication called Preventing Substance Abuse
Among LGBTQ Teens has been released as a partnership from the Human
Rights Campaign and Partnership for Drug-Free Kids.
Its the rst product from the HRC Foundation, the educational arm of the
organization, and the Partnership, a national non-prot that works to reduce
substance abuse among adolescents. The booklet explores what it calls unique
challenges faced by LGBT youth such as bullying and family rejection that can
contribute to drug use.
The resources are designed to promote understanding and provide practical
guidance on protecting LGBT youth, along with reducing their risk of drug and
alcohol abuse through better family support, safer schools and more caring
adults in communities.
The booklet advises that parents and caregivers discuss their concerns and
expectations about substance use with teens, focusing on health risks and ask
teens to share their perspectives, sexual orientation and gender identity should
be armed and supported, biases should be confronted and policy makers
should fund research into substance abuse prevention. The publication can be

referred to as bad carbs, are made up of basic sugars that are easy to digest
and provide very little nutritional value to the body. Simple carbs, generally, tend
to be lower in ber and higher in sugar. When it comes to simple carbs we tend
to get a little confused on whats a good simple carbohydrate and whats a bad
simple carbohydrate. For example, most fruits and vegetables are simple carbs
just like that of cookies, cakes and pies.
Whats the dierence? Our body processes these simple sugars dierently.
For instance, the ber in fruits and veggies changes the way the body breaks
down the sugar and slows down their digestion, making them a bit more like a
complex carb and as result, providing you with a sustained source of energy and
key vitamins and nutrients that you need to stay healthy. On the other hand,
simple sugars like soda, candy, white rice, bread and pasta are quickly absorbed
and provide a quick energy boost and then a crash. These types of simple carbs
contain little to no nutritional value.
So whats my advice on eating simple sugars? I dont think anyone should
deprive themselves of the bad simple sugars like candy, cookies, etc. Food is
meant to be enjoyed and therefore, my suggestion is eating these simple carbs
right before you workout so that you can either burn them o or use them as a
source of energy during the workout. Generally, I nd we tend to eat our bad
simple carbs in the evening and therefore, I suggest ipping the script. Eat your
bad carbs in the morning or earlier in the day when you are more active so you
can burn them o.
Complex carbs, often referred to as good carbs, are made of sugars that
are denser and take the body more time to break down. They generally have
something called a lower glycemic load, which just means you will get smaller
amounts of sugar released at a more consistent rate, providing a sustained
source of energy instead of the boost and crush you get from simple sugars. In
addition, almost all complex carbohydrates are packed with essential vitamins
such as vitamins A,B,C and K, that keep us healthy and strong. Examples of
complex carbs include kale, asparagus, broccoli, whole grains, beans and apples.
The more complex carbs we eat, the better we feel. I recommend having at least
three large servings of complex carbs per day. It would be even better if one of
those servings came as a late evening snack. Because they are so dense, complex
carbs tend to keep us satiated and away from reaching for the sweets at night.

cant get the rules right

A trio of notables in District politics announced last Friday their intention to get
tatted up with an image of the D.C. ag.
They had better hurry.
A shockingly inept third try in two years
by the D.C. Department of Health to develop regulations governing tattoo artists and
body piercers, released only seven days earlier, is the reason. The three local luminaries
should quickly head to the nearest tattoo
studio to get inked if they intend to do so
within the boundaries of the citys ensign.
Unfortunately for D.C. Council member
Mary Cheh, NBC4 News reporter and local columnist Tom Sherwood, and NPRWAMU radio talk show host Kojo Nnamdi,
it may soon be impossible for them to
follow through on their pledge. The three
agreed during the weekly live broadcast
of The Politics Hour to emblazon the
ag on their bodies if a listener donated
$3,000 to the station.
What they could discover, unless city
ocials once again put a stop to the now
notorious and zany regulatory zeal among
the citys day Department of Health hierarchy, is that the ink well is empty.
At least these prominent personalities
wont have to undergo a 24-hour waiting
period. That government-as-goddess requirement, as detailed two years ago in this
column, was eventually dropped by ocials
in response to pushback from local tattoo
artists and studio operators, as well as outraged patrons and stunned residents.
Matt Jessup, known as Fatty and
the namesake two-decade proprietor
of three area Fattys Tattoos & Piercings
studios, is warning that ocials still cant
get it right. Jessup is a founder of the D.C.
Coalition of Professional Body Artists, a
trade association formed in response to
this bungled bureaucratic brouhaha and
credited with halting proposed regula-
tions in both 2013 and 2014.

inks from talented artisans at small reputable boutique micro-suppliers located worldwide. These sources have neither the nancial motivation nor corporate wherewithal
to register with an obscure D.C. agency for
the small volume of potential local sales.
Tattoo professionals would be forced to
acquire substandard pigments and equipment from approved purveyors notably
Chinese manufacturing conglomerates with
mass-market distribution networks.
In other words, high-quality tattoo inks
may soon dry up in D.C.
The still-tome-like voluminous regulations also stipulate a slew of other facility and operating requirements more
bizarre boondoggle necessitating costly
construction and extraordinary expense
than oering consumer or public safety
benet. They astonishingly include mindnumbing minutiae on bathroom toilet pa-

Jessup points to straightforward regulations in neighboring Maryland as a better approach, and the reason he opened
his third location outside the District
in Silver Spring. He notes that the D.C.
health departments tendency to model
regulations and create unnecessary regulatory boards based on a California-style

and ridiculous rules. Some may argue its
a justiable protocol for governing thousands of studios in a large state, but not a
dozen in a small jurisdiction.
It should be instructive that there has
never been a single incident of disease
transmission at a D.C. tattoo or piercing studio during at least 20 years of modern-era
commercial operations. Sensible training
and certication requirements, along with
reasonable facility inspection and safety
compliance oversight, are fully supported
by local body-art business operators.
Its the pain of D.C. rulemaking zealots so
far incapable of producing workable regulations that far exceeds any discomfort produced by a tattoo or piercing needle.

SMYALs youth need our support

Open your wallet and support
groups annual brunch
PETER ROSENSTEIN is a longtime Democratic

Party and LGBT rights activist. He is a regular
contributor to the Blade.
It has been a little over a year since

Sultan Shakir took over from Andrew
Barnett as executive director of SMYAL.
Andrew did an amazing job and Sultan
had big shoes to ll; but it is evident he is
more than up to the job.
Over the past year, SMYAL has begun
new programs and continued to expand
existing ones. If they are to continue this
progress and serve all the young people
needing them we must all open our wallets and support them. A fun way to do
that and hear about their programs is
to attend the 18th Annual brunch taking
place on Sunday, Nov. 15.
SMYAL has launched a new Youth Leadership Award program. It will provide
scholarships to LGBT youth in the D.C.

metro area to further their academic pursuits. The scholarship recognizes the accomplishments of young, out, LGBT leaders, many of whom have faced challenges
as a result of coming out to their friends
and family. A few have already received
scholarships. One went to Emily who was
the valedictorian of her class; another
went to Maya who was thrown out of her
home at the age of 15. Maya went on to
nish high school while also working to
support herself and prepare for college
while supporting and encouraging other
young people in her community who
were also struggling with homelessness.
One of the programs SMYAL expanded was the counseling services it offers. Through a partnership with George
Washington University, SMYAL expanded
the availability of free, condential, oneon-one therapeutic services for LGBTQ
youth. Many of the youth who come
to SMYAL are from low-income backgrounds and may not have access to paid
mental health services. With youth coming out younger and younger, there is an
increased need for mental health services
to ensure LGBTQ youth have a trusted
professional to support their mental
health and well-being as they navigate
family, school and community pressures.
We know LGBTQ youth often miss school

for fear of bullying and continue to face
higher rates of depression and suicide.
SMYAL is committed to helping put the
young people it serves on the road to
success.
In addition, SMYAL is expanding its successful Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) network. This program works in schools in
D.C., Maryland and Virginia to build and
support youth-led GSAs. The program is
expanding from working in high schools
and colleges to also working in the regions middle schools to support out and
questioning youth who are coming out
younger. Through the work being done
by GLSEN and others, many teachers and
administrators today are more supportive of LGBTQ youth than they have ever
been. But many still struggle with how to
best support out and questioning youth;
how to talk to parents about the role of
LGBTQ groups in schools; and how best
to have conversations with other students about being supportive of their
LGBTQ peers. SMYALs GSA network provides individual support to GSAs in the
region to assist youth with developing
campaigns that advance pro-LGBTQ policies. But just as important is their role
in increasing the cultural competency of
school sta, parents and students in en-
suring all students have a great experience in school that will translate to the
community around them.
There are many organizations serving
the LGBT community we are all asked to
support. Among them are HRC and the
Task Force; the Victory Fund and PFLAG.
In addition, those who are active in our
community are being inundated with requests from political candidates, many of
whom today support the ght for civil and
human rights for our community.
But nothing is more important than
supporting our youth as they come out
and face family and community, which
are often still not supportive. Todays
youth see members of the LGBT community portrayed in positive ways on television. There are stories every day about
LGBT people in the media.
While too many still portray us in negative ways, many more are positive. Youth
see they can now get married and adopt
children and in many places we do have
protections at work. Still when they do
come out, as they are doing younger and
younger, it can be shocking to them how
many of their families and peers dont accept them. So it is crucial that SMYAL is
there for them during those dicult years
when at times it can seem no one else
cares and they are all alone.

I have a sister named Monica who lived
in the same town as Linda Tripp, but my
sis never cashed in on the All-in-the-Family fun. Privately she did tell me that Linda
Tripp never scooped up after her dog.
But everyday the newspaper, op-eds,
and online alert headlines all have a
how-dare-she? tone. How dare Clinton
run for president? How dare she laugh
like that? How dare she change her mind?
Even the rare compliment has a snarky
she got lucky undertone. Dont even

get me started on Maureen Dowd. Shes
semi-gone but the snarky torch of MoDos mojo has been passed on to Frank
Bruni. Admittedly Hillarys press handlers
are awful. Thank goodness for Katherine
McKinnon on SNL. Her Hillary and Hillarys Val were funny and human.
For several reasons, I take it all very
personally. You try seeing your name defamed every time you read the news or
inadvertently land on Fox News.
Also Hillary gets my butch up. I go into
my wide-legged, arms crossed on chest,
resting-bitch-face protective stance.
And I have secret shame about emails
I have written. Somewhere in the Cloud
my early, pre-NSA, pre-hackathon, unself-censored, out-for-blood, gossip girl
emails languish. The Cloud is forever,
eternal. Apparently I-God is less forgiving than God. Theyre a black mark on the
logic board of my soul. Im not proud of
them.
And its really not the witty character
assassinating emails Ive written that Im
ashamed of. At all. Its my email management skills. I have lost control of email
addresses. Im always getting notes from
the mysterious Daemon Mailer. Why

Equality on the ballot in Virginia next week

Reject GOPs effort to stack
Fairfax School Board

While many in our community are already looking ahead to the 2016 primaries,
thisNov. 3,Virginians will have a chance to
elect all 140 state senators and delegates.
And in Fairfax County, voters will determine
the future of the school board that oversees
the Commonwealths largest school system
and the 10th largest in the nation.
For LGBT and allied voters, equality is truly
on the ballot. Over the past year, the Fairfax
County School Board members have cast
three signicant votes to advance equality
a vote to add sexual orientation to the existing non-discrimination policy, a vote to add
gender identity to the same rule, and a vote
to update the Family Life Education curriculum to tell teenagers that some people are
LGBT and that that is OK (a curriculum from
which parents can opt-out their kids).
These simple changes shocked state and
national anti-LGBT groups including the Fam-
ily Foundation of Virginia, the Traditional

Values Coalition and the Virginia Christian
Alliance. They vowed to make Fairfax County
ground zero in the ght against LGBT protections and hundreds of angry people from

school board meetings to scream ugly insults
at the board members, demand they respect
parental rights and Gods law, and warning the changes would lead to boys going into
the girls bathroom. Having lost, those groups
are doing everything they can to gain a majority on the school board and repeal these

member Jane Strauss, Lee District Member Tamara Derenak Kaufax, and Mason
District Member Sandy Evans all who
whom are seeking re-election.
Mt. Vernon District candidateKarenCor-
bett Sanders(running for an open seat),Sully District candidate Karen Keys-Gamarra(running for an open seat), andProvidence
District candidate Dalia Palchik (running
against incumbent Patty Reed, who did not
back the gender identity and education provisions)have each also made it clear that they
do not support discrimination of any kind.
Every Fairfax voter cancast one vote for
district representativeandthree votes for
at-large members. The school board races
are on the second page of the ballot, so be
sure to ll out the whole thing.
A statement on the Republican district
committees website warns that Fairfax
County School Board has been busy pushing leftist ideas about sexuality onto children
(rather than teaching them about science,
math, technology, humanities, liberal arts,
etc.) against the will of the parents. Lets
make sure, with our votes, that their eorts to
stack the school board in Fairfax are soundly
rejected onNov. 3.

When Mike McMahon married his partner, Ray Valido in February 2013, it
didnt take long for the repercussions to be felt.
In July of that year, he was red from his part-time position as director of
liturgical music at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Arlington. The following month
he left his full-time job as president and CEO of the National Association of
Pastoral Musicians, a mostly Roman Catholic organization.
While I knew in my heart that my ministry within a Roman Catholic environment
and thus my livelihood could be at risk for marrying my partner, my dismissal
still came as a shock, the 64-year-old Pittsburgh native says.
An unocial dont-ask-dont-tell policy was in eect he says, and many
people at the church knew he was gay. But he has moved on and is pragmatic
about it today.
I can honestly say that the blessings have far outweighed the pain, he
says. Ive been set free to be myself in every aspect of my life.
McMahon is now minister of music at National City Christian Church
(nationalcitycc.org) in Thomas Circle. And on Sunday, Nov. 1 he will be ordained,
which he says is just another step in a life-long journey of ministry. He had
considered it earlier in life as a Catholic, but left shortly before he would have
been ordained. He plans to stay at National City but be more deeply engaged
in the overall ministry of the congregation, including a special outreach to
LGBT members.
McMahon has been in the D.C. area for 30 years. He lives with Valido in
Silver Spring, Md., and enjoys concerts, plays and working out in his free time.
How long have you been out and who

was the hardest person to tell?
Coming out has been an evolving
process for me, beginning when I
was 23 and increasing gradually over
the course of my life. I left the closet
completely behind after marrying Ray
in February 2013, being red from my
part-time position as music director in a
Catholic church and leaving my full-time
position as leader of a national Catholic
organization. Like many others in our
community, the most dicult comingout conversations were with my mother.
In the end, of course, love prevailed, and
we had a wonderful relationship until
she died in 1996.
Whos your LGBT hero?

Two that come to mind are Bishop Gene
Robinson, a faithful and courageous
gay Christian leader, and the late
Father Mychal Judge, a gay Franciscan
priest, chaplain of the New York Fire
Department and the rst casualty
among rst responders at the World
Trade Center.
Whats Washingtons
best nightspot, past or present?
Ive enjoyed going with my husband Ray
after a long work week to Bear Happy
Hour at Town, where Ive found people
to be very friendly.
Describe your dream wedding.

For me a dream wedding means a
celebration where love is both real and
evident regardless of size or locale. Ray
and I were married in our own living
room with just eight people present. For
me it was a powerful, dreamy event,
because we were surrounded by people
who loved and supported us, and we
were able to commit ourselves to one
another in the context of the Christian
faith that guides our lives.
What non-LGBT issue are

you most passionate about?
I care deeply about social issues,
particularly immigration and racial
justice. As people who have felt the sting
of discrimination and injustice, I believe
that we in the LGBT community have a
unique ability and a special responsibility
to advocate for those who experience
the eects of racism, xenophobia and
economic disparity.
What historical outcome

would you change?
I would change recent Supreme Court
rulings on campaign nancing, gun
control and the death penalty, all of
which have had negative eects on our
society.
Whats been the most memorable pop

culture moment of your lifetime?
Although I didnt attend it, the
Woodstock Music Festival (1969) had
a huge inuence on me because
it celebrated some of the social
movements that have continued to
inuence me throughout my life,
particularly the civil rights and anti-war
movements of the 1960s.
On what do you insist?

This I believe: that all people are created
in Gods image, regardless of who they
are, what they look like, where they
or their ancestors came from, what is
their legal status or whom they love.
I believe that all should be welcomed
and armed in our society and in our
churches.
What was your last

I posted about my most recent
contribution to HuPost, where I have a
blog about being gay and Christian.
If your life were a book,

what would the title be?
Embracing Sexuality and Spirituality
If science discovered a way

to change sexual orientation,
what would you do?
I would continue to marvel at and give

thanks for the person that God has
made me to be, just as I am.
What do you believe in

beyond the physical world?
I believe that God has called all things
into existence and will bring all things to
fulllment in ways that I cant begin to
articulate and explain.
Whats your advice for

LGBT movement leaders?
Lead from a heart full of compassion
and in a spirit of love. Advocate for
people at risk, especially young people
in need of self-acceptance and LGBT
people in societies where their very
selves are being criminalized.
What would you walk

across hot coals for?
Im not sure about the hot coals, but
Im willing to make personal sacrices
for my husband and other people I love
and for my beliefs and principles. Ill go
the extra mile to be part of a church
community that proclaims that all are
welcome and that all means all.
What LGBT stereotype

annoys you most?
I dont like any portrayals of LGBT people
that suggest were all alike. We are an
amazingly diverse community!
Whats your favorite LGBT movie?

I was most moved by Brokeback
Mountain, but most delighted by La
Cage aux Folles.
Whats the most

overrated social custom?
Im often uncomfortable with titles and
usually like to be addressed by my rst
name.
What trophy or prize

do you most covet?
Is there a prize for living authentically or
making a dierence for others? If there
were, those are the ones Id like to have.
What do you wish youd known at 18?

I wish that I had known in the depths of
my heart not only that I deserve to be
loved, but that Im already loved by God
as the gay man that I am.
Why Washington?
I love Washington because of its culture,
history and diversity. I love the impact of
the African-American community on this
city and the region. I enjoy living in the
nations capital where important issues
are being argued and where far-reaching
decisions are made.

After 25 years at Studio,

Serge Seiden needed
a change

It was time to get o 14th Street,
says Serge Seiden explaining why after
25 years at Studio Theatre, he left his
position as the companys producing
director in August.
I really needed a change and a new
challenge, he says. That meant going
somewhere else.
The out director has found that
challenge at Mosaic Theater Company,
the new company where he recently took
on the role of managing director and
producer. Helmed by Artistic Director Ari
Roth (formerly of Theatre J) and located
at Atlas Performing Arts Center on 12th
Street, N.E., Mosaic is dedicated to making
socially relevant art.
Mosaics mission can be described in four
watch words, Seiden says. Intercultural
theyre deliberately inclusive. This majority
of this seasons roles are for AfricanAmerican actors. Independent they
make their own money and arent beholden
to any other organization. Entertaining
though theyll be producing important
works of relevance, it wont be too heavy.
And uncensored theyre willing to take
on all topics.
My son is biracial so the intercultural
part of Mosaics mission particularly
appeals to me personally, says Seiden,
52. I like the idea of trying to make
change through theater and I like
working with our diverse board members
and fund raising which is the managing
director component of my job, something
I didnt do at Studio. Mosaic poses new
challenges and thats what I was looking
for. Its the right thing to do.
The companys inaugural season opens
this week with the world premiere of Jay
O. Sanders Unexplored Interior (This is
Rwanda: the Beginning and End of the

Earth), the story of a young lmmaker
who returns to his native Rwanda to
uncover the horrors of his familys violent
demise. Its staged by Derek Goldman.
January through April, Mosaic presents
its Voices from a Changing Middle East
Festival: the War Come Home. Included in
the four productions is I Shall Not Hate,
a one-man show based on the inspiring
international best-selling memoir by
Izzeldin Abuelaish, a Palestinian doctor
whose young daughters were killed when
an Israeli bomb hit their home during
Operation Cast Lead.
Seiden is slated to direct Mosaics May
production of Cori Thomas obeat urban
comedy When January Feels Like Summer.
Though no longer on sta at Studio,
Seiden hasnt broken all ties with the
esteemed company. Studios current
oering the nal two installments of
Richard Nelsons four-part Apple Family
Cycle now running in repertory is
directed by Seiden. Titled Sorry and
Regular Singing, they continue the
examination of an American familys
highs and lows played out against a
changing America.
Though busy at Mosaic, Seiden was
eager to complete Nelsons cycle (he
also directed the rst two installments).
He cites the opportunity to work with a
stellar cast which includes Rick Foucheux,
Ted van Griethuysen, Kimberly Schraf,
Jeremy Web, Elizabeth Pierotti, and out
actor Sarah Marshall as a major incentive.
When you have a cast of this caliber
you can work in a deeper way than youre
ordinarily allowed, he says. You dont
have to tell them how to do scenes. They
know that already. Instead, youre mostly
keeping the room creative and steering
the course.
Set in the family dining room with lots of
real food on hand, the plays are steeped
realism, a style at which Seiden excels.

Joan Osbornes landmark 1995 album
Relish is being reissued today (Friday,
Oct. 30) in a deluxe 20th anniversary
edition in three formats a single-disc
edition with bonus cuts, a 20-track digital
bundle with more outtakes and a spate of
live B-sides or a double-LP set.
Osbornes Solid Soul Tour with Mavis
Staples comes to the Lisner Auditorium on
Saturday, Oct. 31. We caught up with her
by phone from a tour stop at Penn State to
reminisce about all things Relish.
On what inspired the reissue: The
record still has a lot of fans and its nice to
just sort of give a nod to the fact that its
been around so long.
On rst single St. Teresa: I think it
was one of those situations where you
release a song that you feel is going to get
people interested in the record as a whole
and then you wait and build a little interest
that way, then you bring out the song that
you think might be your pop hit, so I think
that was everybodys strategy if I recall.
On why there were two St. Teresa
videos: After One of Us was such a big
hit, they felt they wanted to re-release St.
Teresa as a single and I guess they werent
completely happy with that rst video. I
was like, Well, I have an idea for it, and they
allowed me to direct the second video where
I was a hotel maid. That was really fun.
On mega-hit One of Us: I liked the
song and I thought it was interesting. I
dont think that I anticipated it becoming
the sort of pop hit that it was or that it
became or that it would be controversial.
I could see how people might take
exception to using the word slob, as
in just a slob like one of us, to refer to
God because that certainly ies in the
face of most cultures perceptions of
God, but I didnt think it was particularly
sacrilegious. I felt the song was kind of
like having a little kid come up to you and
tug on your sleeve and ask you a very
innocent question but a question you
dont really have the answer for which
kind of sets you back and makes you think

about things in that way that children can
do because they dont know any better.
On the Airplane Ride sample that
opens One of Us: That came from a
record I found in a little record store in
SoHo. I was just wandering around in
there one day trying to write lyrics and I
went down and found this compilation
of Appalachian music and it looked
interesting to me so I brought it home.
Later I brought it into the session and
Rick Cherto, the producer, and Eric
Bazillian and Rob Hyman and the guys I
was collaborating with, we were all sort of
charmed by it, in particular the heavenly
airplane bit, we just thought it would be
a fun thing to add to the front of (One of
Us). A lot of people thought it was me, but
it wasnt. Her name was Nell Hampton.

On locating the Relish outtakes:
I didnt have any of it. It was all in some
Universal Music Group vault. I think Rob
Hyman had a couple of cassette tapes
that he dug out of a box at home. I looked
for stu in my archives but I couldnt
really nd anything. The only thing that
wasnt from the vault was the cassette of
Robs original demo of One of Us.
On Century, a non-album track she
used to perform around the time of
Relish: That was one we were taking
about putting on (the reissue) but there
are always things that make it on to a

Local chefs get creative

at HRC wedding event

The pastry display at the fourth
annual Chefs for Equality event was
something like walking into a wedding
cake showroom, with artful lighting and
eager crowds leaning in for a closer look
at delicate swirls of buttercream and
handmade owers crafted from fondant.
For Levi Richard, executive pastry
chef at the Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner,
it was an opportunity to join his peers
at an event that hes always wanted to
participate in, even though, as a late
entry, he didnt have time to make a cake.
I was able to pull some strings and get
in at the last moment, Richard says, but
I hope that its something that my hotel
can be a part of for years now.
He
didnt
arrive
empty-handed,
of course. Always seeking to create
desserts that are familiar yet still slightly
unexpected, Richard played with the
concept of pumpkin pie, oering up sous
vide pumpkin with a muscovado sugar
cream topped with brown butter streusel
the kind of truly delectable dessert that
reminds us why pastry chefs are becoming
the stars of restaurant kitchens. Its their
job to oer that last bite of a meal, a nal
avor memory that can make or break a
diners experience and determine whether
theyll return for another meal in the future.
Its not a job for the faint-hearted.
The wedding cake is perhaps the ultimate
in desserts, because, no matter how much a
couple wrestles over whether to serve prime
rib or salmon, the centerpiece of every
wedding feast is the cake.
When it comes down to it, the wedding
cake is one of the most important visual
choices that a couple has when planning
a wedding, says Tressa Wiles, pastry chef

at Bayou Bakery, Coee Bar & Eatery
in Arlington and D.C. The cake is an
opportunity to be creative and show o
personality and style. The design can say
something about who they are as a couple
and the avor can be a way of sharing
something personal whether its a rich cake
with pecans and brown sugar for a couple
from the South or red velvet because it was
something they enjoyed on a rst date.
The pastry chefs at Chefs for Equality
were asked to make wedding cakes with
Southern air, as the Oct. 20 event focused
on the Religious Freedom Restoration
Act being considered by southern states
in the wake of this years Supreme Court
decision in support of same-sex marriage.
For pastry chef Wiles, this meant drawing
on the Louisiana heritage of her boss,
chef David Guas, a Louisiana native. In
her trio of cakes, the largest was inspired
by a magnolia tree, a four-tier confection
shaped to look like an old tree trunk, with
Equality carved into the trunk surrounded
by a heart and arrow. That really gave it
the romantic, nostalgic and truly Southern
look and feel, Wiles says.
The ubiquitous magnolia ower also
featured in the elegant gold and white
cake presented by Tiany MacIsaac,
whose Buttercream Bakeshop will be
opening in D.C.s Shaw community in
2016. For MacIsaac, the concept behind
the wedding cake display at Chefs for
Equality is one that she found to be
meaningful as a pastry chef.
Because I get to be part of so many
beautiful weddings, I was especially aware
of how unfair it was that one group of
people were denied that right, she says.

Born to a 14-year-old mother, raised

in a household with an alcoholic
grandfather, Jarrett Neal was in eighth
grade when his gym class accidentally
walked in on their coach showering. It
was Neals rst glimpse of a naked man
and it ended my boyhood, he writes in
What Color is Your Hoodie: Essays on
Black Gay Identity.
He was well into college when he nally
admitted to himself that he was attracted
to men; still, the daily taunts from his
more athletic, more self-condent peers
and the absence of a father haunted him
for many years. To counteract it, Neal
joined a gym and worked out tirelessly,
until he realized that hed never have a
body like He-Man. He was never going to
make a living with his physique.
Instead, Neal knew that he had to write.
It was write or die, he says, though
hes been told that his style is either too
black or too gay and he once assumed
that as a boy I wasnt supposed to care
about books. Even so, he devoured the
works of gay men, particularly those who
were black. That voracity for books led to
a teaching career.

Whats the deal with pocket listings?

Secretive practice can
limit audience of buyers

Every once in a while, I come across a
letter in my mailbox or a neighbor will
bring a letter to me promising private
placement or exclusive showcase listings from a real estate agent. This service,
promising privacy and discretion in listing
your home, is commonly referred to as a
pocket listing.
In essence, a pocket listing is one that
does not place your home on the open
market, or the multiple listing service
(MLS). In the D.C. area, real estate agents
MLS aliate is known as the Metropolitan Regional Information System or MRIS.
Pocket listings are not put on the MRIS,
and as a result, the listing is not seen by
an open market of buyers who are actively in the market. In return, sellers operate
by a much more discreet set of rules to
sell their home. The buyers who see the
home are normally limited to the network
of the listing agent and listing brokerage.
Lets be honest, the theory behind a
pocket listing is beautiful: full privacy, less
stress in scheduling showings to the public, no open houses or signs on the yard,
and a greater chance to dictate a price
above market value to a buyer who truly
wants your home. However, I would argue that the consequences far outweigh
the benets.
One of the greatest myths of a pocket
listing is that a private listing will generate

more buzz to buyers who have already
seen everything that is on the market.
However, common sense and a little bit
of research into how an open market
works will tell you otherwise.
For instance, D.C. is considered a
sellers market, meaning that the inventory of homes is outpaced often times
by demand to purchase. Thus, there are
at most times more buyers than sellers.
When you put your home on the market
as a pocket listing, you lose the majority
of your audience by limiting the eyes that
can see your home. Thus, the idea that
fewer buyers may mean greater price is
automatically incorrect because limiting
your market automatically decreases demand for your home. A buyer who sees
your home as a pocket listing will also
have access to search for comparable
homes, many of which may have sold for
less than your asking price.
Moreover, the listing agent and listing
brokerage are often times the most beneted by a pocket listing. Whereas the
MRIS allows all real estate agents to see
your listing, a pocket listing is only limited
to the network of the listing agent and
listing brokerage. This means that the total commission normally ends up in the
hands of the agent and the broker. While
this commission is certainly negotiable,
putting your listing on the market allows
for much more exposure and creates an
atmosphere where a buyers agent will
work harder to show your home.

by their negatives; in truth, the one who
benets the most from this type of sale

is the listing agent and listing brokerage.
Even in a market as fast-paced as the D.C.
area, it still does take an open market and
as many eyes as possible on a home in
order to sell it in the shortest time for the
highest price.
