Yad Vashem and the Holocaust
Survivors’ Memoirs Project, with
the World Federation of Bergen-
Belsen Associations assistance, have
embarked on a mission to publish
Holocaust survivor memoirs in English.
With a grant from Random House, this
joint project hopes to publish several
memoirs annually over the next few
years. Our goal is to collect, preserve,
and make available to interested
readers the autobiographical accounts
of survivors of the Holocaust, so that
their memories can be transmitted to
future generations.
As Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie
Wiesel has observed, “The Holocaust
must never be studied exclusively from
the perspective of the perpetrators.
Each survivor’s story is unique, and
adds to our understanding of the
Holocaust and the understanding of
future generations”.

Belgium during the Holocaust. Their mother’s

is one of the uncommon cases where good
triumphed over absolute evil in the Holocaust;

Days of Rain

Drawing on the diary that he kept for the
pivotal year 1943, Enzo Tayar recounts
the impact on his family and friends of the
increasingly severe anti-Jewish measures
instituted by Italy and of the German invasion
of their former ally. For safety, Tayar fled his
once tranquil Florence separately from
his sister and parents, taking refuge on a
succession of farms throughout Tuscany.
They were not reunited until after the Allied
conquest of Italy.
After liberation, Tayar served as a U.S. Army
interpreter, taking part in the interrogation
of Fascists as a prelude to postwar
prosecutions.

This is the story of an eighteen-year-old boy
who left his family and fled his native Vienna
to Holland. There, as an illegal refugee,
he was imprisoned in the state prison at
Veenhuizen, where he wrote a diary relating
his experiences in 1938 in Vienna and
Holland.
The book goes on to tell of his survival during
the war working on Dutch farms, acquiring
forged documents from the underground,
and hiding in Charlotte van Dijk’s home in
Utrecht from late 1942 onward.

The dramatic story of Gene and Mark, two
young Jews forced to flee their home in
southern Poland in 1939, only to be arrested
by Soviet authorities the following year and
transported to labor camps north of the
Arctic Circle. Near death from starvation, they
were released after 18 months and traveled
thousands of miles across the Soviet Union
before finding refuge in a Cossack village
in the Caucasus. They survived six months
of Nazi occupation and were later drafted
by a Polish brigade of the Red Army and
participated in Soviet advance through
Poland and into Germany, where Gene was
seriously wounded and counted for dead.
Alan Elsner is a journalist and author based
in Washington, DC. In 25 years working for
Reuters News Service, he has covered the
U.S. State Department, headed coverage of
U.S. presidential campaigns and is currently
their U.S. National Correspondent. He is
author of “Gates of Injustice: The Crisis in
America’s Prisons.”

Widely regarded as one of their matriarchs by
Holocaust survivors, Dr. Hadassah Rosensaft
(1912-1997) was imprisoned in Auschwitz-
Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen. She kept 149
Jewish children alive in Bergen-Belsen from
December 1944 until their liberation on April
15, 1945, and then served as administrator
of that camp’s hospital. She was one of the
leaders of the Jewish Displaced Persons in
the British Zone of Germany, was one of the
principal witnesses for the prosecution at the
first trial of Nazi war criminals in 1945, and
played a pivotal role in the creation of the
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
