INDIA: NATURE AND CULTURA

India is one of the most diverse places on the planet, with so many religions, so many
languages, and many ways of life. However, everywhere in India life has a spiritual dimension
which connects people with nature in an unusual way. Animals and people are never far apart,
and they often share the same space; wild monkeys play in temples, cows wander through city
streets, and nobody thinks anything about it. Placid domestic elephants bathe beside women
doing their washing. On the Indian subcontinent most elephants are not wild creatures, as they
are in Africa. They were domesticated here thousands of years ago. You see them working in
the countryside with their mahouts their handlers or covered in colourful clothing and
jewellery for festivals in cities. When many Hindus look at an elephant, they do not see it as just
an animal. They think of Ganesh, the elephant god, one of the most important deities in the
Hindu culture. Ganesh is the god people pray to for help with their everyday problems, and
statues of Ganesh are everywhere. Because of the connection to Ganesh, some people even treat
with respect wild elephants that destroy their crops. Farmers have even prostrated themselves
before a fierce elephant instead of frightening it off. In India there is no separation between the
spiritual and the everyday. In this culture, all life is interconnected. It is a different way of
thinking about the world.
