ME 663 Advanced Heat Transfer

Assignment No. 01: Due on 04/09/2015 (During class timing)

Question 1: A plane wall of thickness 2L has internal heat sources whose strength varies
according to qG = q0 cos(ax), where q0 is the heat generated per unit volume at the centre of
the wall (x = 0) and 'a' is a constant. If both sides of the wall are maintained at a constant
temperature of Tw, derive an expression for the total heat loss from the wall per unit surface
area.
Question 2: A hollow sphere with inner and outer radii of R1 and R2, respectively, is covered
with a layer of insulation having an outer radius of R3.
a) Derive an expression for the rate of heat transfer through the insulated sphere in terms of
the radii, the thermal conductivities, the heat transfer coefficients, and the temperatures of
the interior and the surrounding medium of the sphere.
b) Also determine an expression for the critical radius of the insulation in terms of the
thermal conductivity of the insulation and the surface coefficient between the exterior
surface of the insulation and the surrounding fluid. Assume that the temperature
difference, R1, R2, the heat transfer coefficient on the interior, and the thermal
conductivity of the material of the sphere between R1 and R2 are constant.
Question 3: A shaft of radius ro rotates inside a sleeve of thickness . Frictional heat is
generated at the interface at a rate qi. The outside surface of the sleeve is cooled by
convection. The ambient temperature is Tand the heat transfer coefficient is h. Consider
steady state one-dimensional conduction in the radial direction. Write the heat equations and
boundary conditions for the temperature distribution in the shaft and sleeve.
Question 4: An experiment set up has a heat generating rod (krod) of radius ri and length L
which is protected with an external insulating material (kins) of thickness tins. To restrict the
maximum temperature of the heat generating rod below Tmax, the set up is cooled at the outer
wall by external forced convection. Assume uniform temperature of Tin for the external flow
at its entry side and Re is varied from 1105 to 4105. Assess the variation of Tmax with
respect to change in Re. An empirical relationship valid for external forced convection in the
given range of Re is given by Nu=CRemPr1/3 (C=0.027, m=0.805). (Assume any missing data
sensibly).
Question 5: Consider a brake of vehicle which is modeled as flat plate (brake drum) moving
on a composite plate (brake shoe) with a constant velocity V
as shown in Fig. 1, neglect the effect of curvature. The
constant and uniform interface pressure is p, the coefficient
of dry friction is .
a) Calculate the heat transfer to the drum and to the
shoe?
a) Find the maximum temperature of the brake?
