I followed up my lifeguarding experiences with a year volunteering with the AmeriCorps ACCESS
program. I served at El Centro Hispano in Durham, North Carolina as the Latino Youth Education
Liaison. I co-lead a youth leadership development group for at-risk Latino youth, ran a bilingual
tutoring program for at-risk Latino children and youth grades PreK-12 as well as directed a summer
camp for at-risk Latino children ages 5-11. Through my work with the youth leadership development
group, I coordinated programming for the youth as well as mentored several students in their schools
work and organized a gang prevention/intervention youth forum for 50 Durham youth. In addition to
maintaining the tutoring program in place, I developed a summer school program for Latino children
with licensed Exceptional Children educators working in the Durham and Wake county school
districts. Through the coordination and implementation of the summer program, I sought out teenage
volunteers to provide campers with opportunities commonly unavailable to Latino children living in
the Durham area through field trips and enrichment opportunities such as Interpretive Dance with the
American Dance Festival.
The last few years have afforded me the opportunity to work with youth in a variety of settings. I
have played the part of mentor, tutor, confidant, group leader and now pursue my new role in which I
hope to combine all of these: teacher. I am currently perusing my Masters of Arts in Teaching
English to Speakers of Other Languages.
