and the Ensemble Modern. In the opera house he has
conducted Tchaikovskys Eugene Onegin for San
Francisco Opera, Brittens A Midsummer Nights Dream
at the Glyndebourne Festival (having previously appeared
with Glyndebourne Touring Opera) and Brittens Peter
Grimes for Washington National Opera.
His critically acclaimed recordings for Hyperion
include two CDs of Stravinsky ballets; a disc of Jancek
orchestral music; a recording of Brittens complete works
for piano and orchestra with Steven Osborne, which won
a 2009 Gramophone Award; two discs of Roslavets,
including the violin concertos with Alina Ibragimova; violin
concertos by Taneyev and Arensky with Ilya Gingolts; viola
concertos by Rubbra and Walton with Lawrence Power;
and Regers Piano Concerto and Richard Strausss
Burleske with Marc-Andr Hamelin.
Ilan Volkov is one of the guiding forces behind Levontin
7, a performance venue in Tel Aviv that brings together
differing musical genres, including classical, jazz, electronic and rock. In 201112 he assumed the position of
Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Iceland
Symphony Orchestra, where his role includes creating an
annual new-music festival in which he envisages the
orchestra collaborating with contemporary composers,
non-classical musicians and artists.

British violinist Anthony Marwood is recognized throughout the world for his exceptional artistry, passionate
intelligence and remarkable ability to draw a rich palette of
sound from his instrument. His great versatility as an
orchestral soloist, chamber musician, recitalist and
ensemble director has enthralled audiences and critics
around the globe.
As soloist Marwood has worked with many major conductors and orchestras. Engagements as soloist/director
with leading chamber and symphony orchestras form
a large part of his career. Formerly Artistic Director of
the Irish Chamber Orchestra, he has also built strong
relationships with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields,
the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy and
the Australian National Academy of Music.

Dowlands Thema hat eine stark ansteigende und
abfallende Form, so dass Brittens Bearbeitung des
Liedes fr den Hrer leicht nachvollziehbar ist. TremoloAnspielungen an das melodische Profil zu Beginn
kndigen eine ruhige Darbietung des Themas in den
tieferen Streichern an, whrend die Harmonie durchweg
komplex und schwer fassbar bleibt, bis Brittens Musik
ganz am Endein einem Moment von technischem
Geschick und knstlerischer Zaubereiallmhlich in die
schlichte, jedoch expressive harmonische Klangsprache
des Dowlandschen Lieds bergeht. Dieses Konzept eines
Themas mit Variationen, das sozusagen rckwrts erscheint, verwendete Britten spter nochmals, als er 1963
fr Julian Bream seinen zweiten Zyklus mit DowlandReflexionen fr Sologitarre, Nocturnal, schrieb (der
bei Hyperion auf CDA67648 vorliegt) und als er 1971
russische Themen in seiner Cello-Suite Nr. 3 verarbeitete,
die er fr Mstislaw Rostropowitsch komponierte.
