RLWMFC 5-2 Renishaw

Red Lions excellent start to the season continued with a comprehensive 5-2 win
over Renishaw, to match the scoreline from the last fixture between the two
sides.
Top dog Lunn was back at the helm, taking over from Foggy who had managed to
single handedly annoy at least 2/3 of the side in the last game at Pilsley. Changes
were required as Jack Fletcher was working, Jord Thompson was still suffering
with a sore fanny and Leigh Brear pulled up lame in the warm up. In came
skipper Tom Robley, Rich Harrold and Gav Wiley who was hoping to get within a
square mile of the ball this time out unlike at Barlborough earlier in the season.
As the Lion lads took part in a particularly lethargic warm up, Renishaw
seemingly had Louis Van Gaal putting them through their paces. At least 25
minutes of stretching, sprinting and too many bibs and cones all looked very
impressive, but could they back it up?
5 minutes in and it seemed not. A lively start by the new look Lion frontline, in
particular Macca, who took the ball about 30 yards out, went past two or three
players easily and hit a ferocious shot into the top corner. Impressive for a lad
with one leg.
Lion continued to stretch Renishaw at the back and a couple more chances came
and went before disaster struck. A simple ball over the top into the Lion area
wasn't dealt with and new signing Matt Chapman, highly recommended by the
Gallagher lads from Shameless FC, inexplicably volleyed the Renishaw player in
the throat. 'I won the ball ref' was met with much amusement by the onlooking
crowd as the increasingly popular referee awarded a penalty. Ad Brear, with a
long running history of never getting near a penalty in about 6 years, saved the
day though keeping the ball out low to his right.
A real let off for the Lion, who as a result upped their game and started to look
dangerous going forward again. A thunderbolt from Robley rocked the inside of
the post and an effort from Gav went just wide. Hilly and Jack Wilson were the
centre of the creativity and it was no surprise when a pinpoint cross from the left
foot of Jack found Macca no more than 5 yards out and he got his and Lions
second goal. 2-0.
Half time came and went with Lion in control. The only way that they could
seemingly lose the game was to get involved with a ref who looked like he
fancied booking the corner flag. The third goal was going to be crucial and it was
Lion who deservedly got it. Again, Robley made a late run to the edge of the
area, he was found by Jack Wilson from the corner and he screamed a right foot
shot into the top corner. Yes, that's right, two decent shots from Robley in one
game - he's done for the season you'd think.
3-0 up and unfortunately some of the lads thought the game was won. That was
soon put to bed when the Renishaw striker finished well to make it 3-1 from a
tight angle. A response was required and Lion soon finished the game off. More

excellent attacking football saw Lion catch Renishaw on the break. Straight from
a corner Lion quickly moved the ball forward. Hilly and Olly, who was watching
the game and not falling out with his shadow for once, exchanged passes, Cavey
held the ball up and it ended up finding its way back to Hilly to emphatically
make it 4-1.

Lunny rung the changes. The young lads, Tim and Jordan replaced Jack and the
ever balding Bushy, and it was Tim who managed to grab the final Lion goal with
a cool finish into the bottom corner. His soon to be father in law celebrated with
much gusto on the sidelines. Tim looked proud as punch with his goal, but
rumours that he'll spend his 10 goal bonus on penny sweets was rubbished
after the game.
A late consolation for Renishaw saw the score finish 5-2. This shouldn't take away
from an excellent Red Lion performance who dominated from start to finish
against a decent side and now progress to the third round of the prestigious
Chatsworth Cup.
Disturbing scenes after the game unfortunately as Leigh Brear was sent off and
Sid chased the referee from the field with a corner flag. Not sure he'll be
returning any time soon!
Next week Lion host Renishaw again, this time in the league.
