No more: take a stand against domestic violence

October was Domestic Violence Awareness
Month, but domestic violence is an issue that affects
communities everywhere all year round.
Domestic violence or intimate partner violence
(IPV) affects all levels of society and can manifest itself
in many different forms. Physical violence, sexual
violence, threats and emotional abuse are all forms of
IPV. Emotional abuse can often escalate to physical
forms of abuse. Threats and emotional abuse often
prevent the victim from reporting IPV. Furthermore,
victims make excuses for the abusers behavior because
of shame and fear. Domestic violence knows no
boundaries.
Women aged 20-24 are at the greatest risk of
experiencing nonfatal intimate partner violence.
Women who have experienced domestic violence have
higher rates of stroke, heart disease, asthma and are
more likely to drink heavily than women who have not
experienced intimate partner violence.
Sexual and domestic violence are linked to a
wide range of reproductive health issues including
sexually transmitted disease and HIV transmission,
miscarriages, risky sexual health behavior and more.
To raise awareness and in honor of all survivors, YOU
can take a stand against domestic violence:

Speak Up: If you know someone whos being hurt
by their partner, remind them they deserve to be safe
and respected. If you know someone whos hurting
their partner, remind them that they are the only ones
who can change their behavior. In both cases, ask how
you can help (if its safe to do so!). You can do a lot by
simply speaking up

Learn About and Share Resources: Everyone
deserves support in breaking free from abuse, but
its hard to know where to begin in finding support.
Community spaces at school or on your campus post
information about healthy relationships, abuse and/
or where to find help. The Womens Resource Center
(WRC) is located in Glasgow and phone # 228-8401.
Glasgows 24 Hour Crisis Line is 228-8400 or toll free
877-972-3232.

Share/Like/Post: Youre not alone in wanting to
end domestic violence, and social media is another
powerful tool for connecting people with help. Agencies
like Futures without Violence, loveisrespect.org and
the National Domestic Violence Hotline are continually
posting content to empower survivors and allies. You
can do your part by liking/sharing on social media.

Vote/Call/Email: Survivors of violence depend
on stronger and more effective legislation. In 2015, the
Montana Legislature passed HB306. This bill provides
up to 28 weeks of unemployment insurance for victims
of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking who
have to leave their jobs for their own safety or the safety
of their family.

Practice Healthy Relationship Skills: Domestic
Violence Awareness Month is an opportunity for us all to
tune-up our relationships. Healthy, happy partnerships
are intentional. When was the last time you talked with
your partner about what a fair fight looks like? Or
when did you last ask yourself, or your partner, Do I/
you feel loved, listen to, supported?

Volunteer: You can also help local domestic
violence centers by volunteering or promoting their
community events.
We all have a chance to shape the movement
against violence. So stay engaged. Tell your story. Ask
tough questions. Look at your relationships. Now that
October is over and its time to throw that old candy
corn away, be better prepared to make your community
safe. Because everyone deserves a healthy relationship!
