HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY

All persons working on this vessel must understand their personal

responsibility and accountability concerning health and safety on
this vessel. All persons are to understand and abide by this Health
and Safety Policy.
Vessel Induction
All personnel should seek onboard induction from the Skipper or his
appointed representative. Safety instruction videos (Health and
Safety for the Fishing Industry and Trawl Sector and Storm Alert) are
also kept onboard the vessel and you should make the time to view
them.
Protective Clothing and Footwear
All personnel are to have and wear, at all times, the appropriate
footwear (i.e. gum boots) when outside of the accommodation area.
Freezer boots, gloves and suits are supplied and should be worn
when in the freezer. A beanie and thick socks are also recommended
and you should include this in your work clothing.
Sun Protection
A sun protection screen is provided and should be applied when you
are working in uncovered areas.
Freezer and Engine Room
Care should be taken in the freezer room. The surface can be
slippery and uneven and your boots may harden with the cold.
In the freezer hold there is an emergency alarm button clearly
marked. You must never go down the freezer without first telling
someone. You should always post a lookout at the hatchway. In the
event of a problem or accident DO NOT go down the freezer to help.
Inform the skipper IMMEDIATELY.
If you are going down the engine room you must inform someone.
Freezer and Engine Room
When working in the rigging care should be taken, as the surfaces
are slippery with salt. A safety harness is to be worn at all times. A
lookout is to be posted when working aloft.

When working out on the booms, post a lookout. A life vest is to be

worn at all times.
Machinery
Care should be taken around all moving machinery (i.e. winches and
engine room). All moving machinery is fitted with safety guards and
rails and you must not stand or put arms or legs inside these guards
at any time.
You will not operate any winches or machinery on this vessel unless
you have been instructed in their use.
Heavy Weights
When lifting heavy weights you should be aware of the condition of
the ropes and lifting gear. Also be aware of the weather conditions
at the time as weights move suddenly in heavy seas. Never stand
under any suspended weights.
When lifting heavy weights you should use the proper lifting
procedure to avoid back injury. Always be aware that you are on a
moving vessel, which can have the tendency to move.
Electrical Fittings
You must isolate any electrical light fitting if you are changing the
globe. A registered repairer will do all other electrical work.
Safety Glasses
Safety glasses must be worn while doing any activity that has the
potential to inflict injury on your eyes i.e. grinding, cutting etc.
Ear Protection
Ear protection is provided and must be worn at all times in the
engine room or in high noise areas.
Life Jacket
A life jacket is supplied for every person on the vessel. You should
know the location and the correct fitting of these jackets.
Fire Extinguishers
There are fire extinguishers mounted in all areas (i.e. wheelhouse
accommodation, engine room). You should know their location and
what type of fire that each extinguisher can be used for. There is
also a fixed fire installation for the engine room (i.e. CO 2) and if you

are in the engine room when this goes off you must VACATE THE
AREA IMMEDIATELY. In the event of a fire on the vessel YOU MUST
NOT ATTEMPT TO FIGHT THE FIRE ALONE. You must report to the
skipper any fire or potential risks of fire IMMEDIATELY.
Equipment
All equipment that you use (i.e. spanners, chain, shackles, cleaning
gear) must be stowed correctly in its proper place. Good
housekeeping helps to avoid accidents.
Life Rafts
There are two life rafts on board this vessel, which are mounted on
the roof of the wheelhouse. You should know their location and how
they operate.
TEDs and BRDs
On this vessel the use of Turtle Exclusion Devices (TEDs) will be
used and, in future, Bycatch Reduction Devices (BRDs). You should
be aware when working the gear that these devices are in the net
and care should be taken when working in rough weather as some
of these devices are bulky and heavy.
Orders
If the order is given to abandon ship you will report to the skipper or
your allocated station in an orderly fashion dressed appropriately.
You must obey any legitimate order given by the skipper or his
nominated representative. If you have any doubts about your ability
to carry out an order you must voice these doubts immediately.
Fighting
Fighting or bullying of any kind will not be tolerated on this vessel
and you will be dismissed immediately.
Hygiene
You must maintain an acceptable level of hygiene aboard this vessel
and ensure that your clothing is washed regularly and stored
properly.
Smoking
There is to be no smoking anywhere inside this vessel (i.e.
accommodation, freezer and engine room).

Drugs and Alcohol

The use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace is strictly prohibited.
Breaches of these regulations will result in instant dismissal.
General Safety
Whilst working on this vessel you should work in the safest possible
manner for yourself and the people around you.
If you are aware of any hazards that could potentially cause an
accident, you will take appropriate steps to minimize this event (i.e.
inform the skipper, change frayed rope, etc.)
You must inform the skipper if you have had any previous injury or
sickness that will require special medication or consideration as to
the type of duties that you can perform.
Reporting Accidents
Any accident, which occurs onboard the vessel, must be reported to
the skipper immediately.
Conclusions
This vessel must be maintained in a clean and hazard free
environment for the safety of all personnel onboard. Following the
procedures set out in this Health and Safety Policy will enhance the
level of safety onboard this vessel. However, observing the Health
and Safety Policy alone will not create a safe working environment.
Ultimately, it is the responsibility of each individual to know where
and how to use the safety equipment fitted to this vessel.
Remember safety is your responsibility
