Placing communication
at the heart of
Early Years
Early Talk 0-5 years captures the golden
age for learning to talk

0-5 years
Why Early Talk for 05 years?
Communication and language skills are the foundation for childrens learning and
key to their life chances. In some parts of the UK, over 50% of children start school
without essential communication skills. These skills are the vehicle for learning,
making friends and succeeding in life.
The revised Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) 2012 framework recognises
communication and language as one of the three prime areas for learning and
development.

What is Early Talk for 05 years?

Early Talk 0-5 years is I CANs highly successful communication and language
programme, aimed at the early years workforce in partnership with parents.
Early Talk 0-5 years training courses and accreditation programmes have been
independently evaluated as enhancing the learning environment for all children,
with a long-term positive impact on staff and practice.

Developed over 10 years, Early Talk 05 years provides a suite of programmes that
enables you to support all young childrens communication skills through a range of
strategies and techniques. Every element of Early Talk 0-5 years
will contribute to your Level 3 Children and Young Peoples
Workforce Diploma, or the Continued Professional
Development Award in Speech, Language and
Communication.

Parents in
Partnership
Children learn and develop well in enabling environments,
in which their experiences respond to their individual needs
and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and
parents and/or carers. EYFS Framework 2012
Right from birth, adults are key in supporting the development of
language skills. Much of this help comes from a close, trusted adult
who responds to babies and toddlers attempts to communicate
and who provides a stimulating environment.
The EYFS 2012 seeks to ensure partnership working between
practitioners and parents and/or carers.
Aimed at practitioners working directly with families, I CANs
Parents in Partnership is a one-day course that will enhance the
support that participants can give to parents and carers regarding
early communication development.
Great course! Very worthwhile.
Sharon Morgan, Family Support/Transition Mentor

Working with
under 3s
75% of a childs brain growth has occurred by the age of 2 and
by 22 months a childs development can predict outcomes at
the age of 26. Hodas (2006) and Feinstein (2003)
Practitioners need to establish a secure foundation for learning
through activities that are planned around the needs and interests of
each individual child.
Working with under 3s is an I CAN one-day course that both
enhances practitioners knowledge, and provides them with
strategies they can use to support communication and language
development right from the start of a childs life. As part of the
training, participants receive a range of resources including one to
help them carry out the EYFS progress check for 23 year olds.
This course is offered directly by I CAN or as part of the DfE funded
Early Language Development Programme (ELDP).
I have really enjoyed this course. I have gained so much insight,
knowledge and information to take away with me.
Lesley Rainbird, Deputy Children Centre Manager, London

Working with
preschoolers and
reception children
By the age of 5, a childs vocabulary will predict their educational
success and outcomes at the age of 30. Feinstein and
Duckworth (2006)
EYFS 2012 promotes teaching and learning to ensure childrens
school readiness, and focuses on communication and language as
one of the three prime areas where support needs to be directed.
The Early Talk Supporting Communication one-day training course
focuses on developing practitioners strategies and interaction styles
to maximise their opportunities to develop every childs skills in
communication and language.
Early Talk Enhancing Communication training is a day that targets
communication further to support children who need more practice
and additional help in communication and language skills, or who
might have some delay with these skills.
Nuffield Oral Language Intervention programme is an oral
language intervention programme for children with speech, language
and communication needs (SLCN) in nursery settings and reception
classes. Developed by The Centre for Reading and Language at the
University of York, I CAN is the exclusive training provider.
The Early Talk Enhancing Communication course was extremely
informative and enjoyable. A good, easy-to-understand structure
and pace to explain the complexities of language development.
Marian Cleworth, Educator, St Helens training session

Evaluation and
accreditation
The accreditation process gave us lots to think about... it has
been a positive, reaffirming and supportive process. Thank you
for giving us the opportunity to be involved.
Linda Elliott, EYFS Leader Malorees Infant School, London
The EYFS 2012 framework requires quality and consistency in all
early years settings, so that every child makes good progress and
no child gets left behind.
I CAN Accreditation is a coveted award in early years,
demonstrating that your setting is supporting the communication
and language needs of its children.
The accreditation process develops practitioners
awareness and skills in early years language and
communication. It details strategies for working
with children and a framework on which to build
the skills development of your entire workforce.
Accreditation is also an effective way of making
sure that what is learned in training is put into
practice and ensuring that this makes a
difference for childrens communication.
While I CAN Accreditation is aimed at
settings that are subject to
Ofsted inspections,
I CAN Good Practice
Validation is an ideal
quality assurance
process for additional
services provided in
children centres or
other settings, including
groups supporting
children aged 05.

Do you want...
