OPENING
By command of the V.H. & R.E. Great Seneschal, a Chapter of Great Priory of Malta
was opened by the Great Prior.
MINUTES
The Minutes of the meeting of Great Priory of Malta held on Tuesday, 19 November
2013, which had been circulated with the Summons for the meeting, were taken as
read and confirmed.
RECEPTION OF THE CHAIRMAN OF THE ST JOHN OF JERUSALEM EYE
HOSPITAL
At the command of the V.H. & R.E. Great Seneschal, the Chapter of Great Priory of
Malta was adjourned by the Great Prior of Malta.
Mr Nicholas Woolf, CStJ, was admitted into the Great Priory under the guidance of
the Great Mareschal and was presented with a cheque for 200,000 by the Very High
and Great Seneschal. Mr Nicholas Woolf then addressed Great Priory:
would like to start by thanking Great Priory in general and the whole of the
membership for their long and continued support of the Eye Hospital and its work in
Gaza and the West Bank of Jerusalem. The Great Priory has been supporting the Eye
Hospital for over 100 years and in recent years your support has grown from
sponsoring just Judith Musallam, Head of Orthoptics, to supporting the entire
Orthoptic department. The recent grants from the members of Great Priory have been
140,000 a year, although last year saw that grow to 190,000 due to the very
generous legacy of your previous Grand Master Leslie Felgate Dring. Todays
donation of 200,000 will be used towards the purchase and refurbishment of the
new hospital in Hebron and with this cheque we now have enough funds to cover all
the costs associated with it. I would like to thank you all once again for your
generosity and I look forward to continuing this special relationship that has grown
over the last 100 years.
Mr Nicholas Woolf, CStJ, then left Great Priory under the guidance of the Great
Mareschal.
APPOINTMENT AND INVESTITURE OF GREAT OFFICERS
The V.H. & R.E. Great Seneschal was pleased to re-appoint R.E.Kt. E. B. Goodwin
as Great Prior of Malta and appoint E.Kt. S. J. Warwick as Great Sub-Prior of Malta.
E.Kt. Warwick was then proclaimed by the Great Mareschal. The V.H. & R.E. Great
Seneschal then invested the following Knights who had been appointed or promoted
in Great Priory.

ADDRESS BY THE VERY HIGH AND RIGHT EMINENT GREAT SENESCHAL

Brother Knights, I can give you an update on the situation of the Most Eminent &
Supreme Grand Masters health.
The initial report is that now all went well and it is now a matter of monitoring his
progress. I would ask you to have him in your prayers for a complete recovery. He
has provided me with a written address which I will read to you in a few moments.
Before this I would like to express my thanks to the Deputy Great Vice-Chancellor
and all the staff at 86 St Jamess for all their support and hard work in ensuring the
administration of todays meeting has been so successful.
To the Great Marshal and his team together with Grand Masters Bodyguard for
ensuring all the ceremonial for today was so smoothly and so precisely executed.
We are honoured this afternoon by the presence of many distinguished guests and
Knights from overseas and I would now like to welcome them, but, Brother Knights,
please will you save your applause until I have finished reading out all their names.
We are joined by a delegation from the Great Priory of France: they are Very High
and Right Eminent Knight Christian Pajolec, Great Seneschal, Right Eminent Knight
Dominique Madej, Great Prior of Malta and Right Eminent Knight Patrick L.
Bunout, Provincial Prior of Greater Paris; and also joined by a delegation from
Spain: R.E.Kt. William B. Norton, G.C.T. and R.E.Kt. Stephen P. Preston, G.C.T.
From Zimbabwe, R.E.Kt. Robert J. Marple, K.C.T.
From the Far East, E.Kt. John L. Morris, P.Gt. Baillie.
And from South Africa (Cape), E.Kt. Brian G. Carstens, P.Gt. Turcopolier.
We are also honoured by the presence of R.E.Kt. Alan Wright, K.C.M., Grand Master
Order of Royal and Select Masters; R.E.Kt. Graham Leslie Flight, K.C.M., Grand
Sovereign Order of the Red Cross of Constantine; R.E.Kt. Paul Raymond Clement,
G.C.M., Grand Supreme Ruler Order of the Secret Monitor; V.E.Kt. Thomas
Jackson, P.Gt.1st Lieut., Grand Master Order of the Allied Masonic Degrees;
V.E.Kt. John Paternoster, P.Gt.1st Lieut., Supreme Magus Societas Rosicruciana in
Anglia; V.E.Kt. Andrew Sweeney, P.Gt.1st Lieut, Grand Summus Order of the
Scarlet Cord; E.Kt. Christopher Maiden, P.Gt.2nd Lieut., Grand High Priest of The
Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests or Order of Holy Wisdom; and E.Kt. Nigel
Willows, First Grand Master of the Worshipful Society of Free Masons, Rough
Masons, Wallers, Slaters, Paviors, Plaisterers and Bricklayers (Operatives).
Also thanks are due to the authorities at United Grand Lodge for the use of this
superb building, a truly magnificent setting.
And finally to you, Brother Knights, for all the support you give to your Preceptories
and Provinces.
I will now read the address from the M.E. & S. Grand Master.
Grand Masters Letter to Great Priory of Malta 18 November 2014
My Dear Brother Knights, I cannot tell you how disappointed and frustrated I am,
once again, not to be able to be with you all this afternoon. Everything was going
well in the summer and I was booked to have the other hip replaced last month, when
I must have lost my presence of mind, for I fell over going up some concrete steps,
which resulted in a broken thigh the same one which had been giving all the
trouble! So it was back to square one with another hip replacement the fourth! I am
now being ultra-cautious but I am well on the road to recovery and sincerely hope to
be back on station by the spring.
I feel sure you will agree that you have witnessed an excellent installation of a Knight
of Malta this afternoon and I would like to thank the Great Prior, R.E.Kt. E. B.
Goodwin and his team, for turning in what I am sure will have been a very
7

professional and enjoyable ceremony. I am sure it will have made a lasting impression
on our candidate.
Congratulations also to all those of you who have been appointed to or received
promotion in Grand Rank. This preferment is well deserved and I look to you to
encourage and promote this Christian Order. These preferments do, of course, follow
on from the Great Ranks you received in the Temple in May and I trust you will live
up to the high standards now expected of you. Well done!
Bro. Knights, we shall shortly be approaching the season of Advent, which
culminates in the celebration of our great Christian Festival of Christmas, when we
commemorate the birth of our Lord and Saviour. Please remember our Christian and
Hospitaller roots and traditions, as we toil in what seems to be an increasingly antiChristian world and I encourage you to pray that the blessings of the Prince of Peace
will descend on all who are living in fear of imminent death and persecution,
particularly in the Middle East and beyond. In this respect I was truly delighted to
hear that you have, today, donated the magnificent sum of 200,000 to the St John of
Jerusalem Eye Hospital. This is a wonderful Christmas gift and I do thank you all
most deeply.
I appreciate that our Great Seneschal will already have addressed you and will be
reading this to you, so I will not delay you longer other than to wish you all the joy,
peace and happiness of Christmas, with a healthy and successful New Year. I look
forward to seeing you all at our Annual Chapter of the Temple in May.
May God bless you all.
ALMS
Alms were collected for the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, amounting to 1,292.04.
CLOSING
By command of the V.H. & R.E. Great Seneschal, the Chapter of Great Priory of
Malta was closed by the Great Prior of Malta.
