CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods and procedures to be used in this study. This

includes the design and method of the research after the variables are identified and

qualified. It also compromises the research design, research locale, the respondents of

the study, sampling design, validation of instruments, scoring of the instrument, data

gathering procedure and statistical tools used.

Research Design

The descriptive correlational type of research design was used in this study.

Evaluating the level of satisfaction on patients with acute and chronic renal failure

regarding with care and physical structure of the hemodialysis unit at Mindanao

Sanitarium Hospital, it determines the relationship between respondent’s profile and

their level of satisfaction.

Research Locale

The study was conduct at Mindanao Sanitarium Hospital (MSH), a private

hospital owned and operated by the Seventh Day Adventist Institution situated at the

National Highway of Tibanga, Iligan City, located at the heart of Iligan City, Lanao Del

Norte and a part of Region X. This study will be specifically conduct on the

Hemodialysis Unit of the hospital, where it has a bed capacity of 10 patients.

26

Respondents of the Study

The study included randomly select 30 respondents who undergone

hemodialysis at MSH disregard of their age, gender, type of renal failure, and

educational attainment.

Sampling Design

The purpose of the study was to use random sampling technique in choosing the

respondents according to the study’s sample size. The researchers have chosen this

technique because it is bias-free and each element has an equal chance of being

chosen.

Research Instrument

The instrument used in the data collection is a self-constructed questionnaire. It

is basically formed from the ideas taken from various resources. The questionnaire has

2 parts: Part 1 consists of the demographic profile of the respondents, and Part 2

contained the level of satisfaction of the respondents.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher passed a letter of request to the in-charged staff of the

Hemodialysis Unit of Mindanao Sanitarium Hospital to ask permission to conduct a

survey about the level of satisfaction of the patient on the nursing care, medical care,
27

and physical structure of the Hemodialysis Unit. Afterwards, the questionnaires will be

distributed to the respondents to be answered by a given amount of time. Respondents

will be remind to answer honestly as possible without leaving any unanswered item.

Statistical Tool Used

The data gathered will be treated using the following statistical tools:

1. Frequency and Percentage. This was use to establish the central tendencies of the

respondent’s level of satisfaction and the possible factors such as age, gender, types of

renal failiure, which may affect the respondent’s level of satisfaction. The frequency

counts are converted into percentage. This is used to define the formula:

P=f/nx100%

Where:

P= the percentage distribution of the respondents’ answer to a certain question

F= the frequency distribution of respondents’ answer to certain question

n= the total number of respondents being selected

2. Weighted Mean. A mean where there is some variation in the relative contribution of

individual data values to the mean. Each data value (Xi) has a weight assigned to it

(Wi). Data values with larger weights contribute more to the weighted mean and data

values with smaller weights contribute less to the weighted mean.

28

Formula: X= ΣwiXi

Where:

X= means the average weighted mean

WiXi= the number of observation multiplied to the attached weight of such value

N= the total number of respondents

3. Correlation Analysis. This was use to determine the significant relationship between

the demographic profile and the level of satisfaction of the respondents.

Formula:

NΣxy ─(Σx)(Σy)
R= ───────────────────────
√[NΣx2─(Σx)2][NΣy2─(Σy)2]
Where:

N = number of pair of scores

Σxy = sum of the products of paired scores

Σx = sum of x scores

Σy = sum of y scores

Σx2 = sum of squared x scores

Σy2 = sum of squared y scores
