The mission of the Staunton Community Unit School District #6 is to provide a safe and superior learning environment for all students
so that they may acquire the knowledge, skills, and character to be productive members of society.

Staunton Families,
The health and safety of students and staff at Staunton Schools is our top priority. With
influenza already present in the state of Illinois we at Staunton Community CUSD No. 6 do
everything possible to keep our families healthy. In order to accomplish this we regularly clean
and disinfect our buildings with special emphasis on high traffic areas and touch points. While
Staunton Schools are not experiencing cases of influenza that are outside of the normal
threshold, there are steps families can take in order to stay healthy.
Common symptoms of the flu are: fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches,
headache, chills, fatigue, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. Antiviral medications may be
beneficial if you are diagnosed with the flu, but must be prescribed by your doctor within 48
hours after the onset of flu symptoms.
Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the following: fast or trouble breathing,
bluish skin color, not drinking enough fluids (not urinating as much as normal), not waking up or
interacting, severe irritability, confusion, flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever
and worse cough, fever with a rash, severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea.
To prevent exposure to other people, children with these symptoms should be kept home from
school. Your child must be excluded from school and school activities until at least 24 hours
after the fever is gone, without the use of fever-reducing medications. This exclusion period also
applies to a student experiencing diarrhea and vomiting.
Listed below are simple ways to protect you and your family:

Wash your hands with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing, and before
eating.
Cover your coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of the elbow,
and immediately discard used tissues in the trash.
Avoid touching your face. Teach your child not to touch his/her eyes, nose or mouth.
Stay at least 3 feet away from people who might be ill.
Eat well and get plenty of sleep.

Should you have questions please contact our school nurse, Sherry Semanek at 618-635-3831.
Sincerely,
Dan W. Cox, Superintendent of Schools
