CooperwasborninDetroit,Michigan,thesonofEllaMae(neMcCart)andEtherMoroniFurnier
(19241987).HisfatherwasapreacherintheChurchofJesusChristheadquarteredinMonongahela,
Pennsylvania.[6]HehasEnglish,Huguenot,Irish,Scottish,andSiouxancestry,[7]andwasnamedafter
oneofhisuncles(VincentCollierFurnier)andthewriterDamonRunyon.[8]Hispaternalgrandfather,
ThurmanSylvesterFurnier,wasanapostleintheChurchofJesusChrist.Cooperwasactiveinhis
churchattheagesof11and12.[9][10]
WhilegrowingupinDetroit,heattendedWashingtonElementarySchool,thenNankinMillsJr.High,
nowLutheranHighSchoolWestland.Followingaseriesofchildhoodillnesses,hemovedwithhis
familytoPhoenix,Arizona,whereheattendedCortezHighSchoolinnorthPhoenix,[11]thento

In1964,16yearoldFurnierwaseagertoparticipateinthelocalannualletterman'stalentshow,sohe
gatheredfellowcrosscountryteammatestoformagroupfortheshow.[13]Theynamedthemselvesthe
Earwigs.[14]Becausetheydidnotknowhowtoplayanyinstrumentsatthetime,theydresseduplikethe
BeatlesandmimedtheirperformancetoBeatlessongs.[14]Asaresultofwinningthetalentshowand
lovingtheexperienceofbeingonstage,thegroupimmediatelyproceededtolearnhowtoplay
instrumentstheyacquiredfromalocalpawnshop.TheysoonrenamedthemselvesTheSpiders,
featuringFurnieronvocals,GlenBuxtononleadguitar,JohnTatumonrhythmguitar,DennisDunaway
onbassguitar,andJohnSpeerondrums.[14]Musically,thegroupwasinspiredbyartistssuchasthe
Beatles,theRollingStones,theWho,theKinks,theDoors,andtheYardbirds.Forthenextyearthe
bandperformedregularlyaroundthePhoenixareawithahugeblackspider'swebastheirbackdrop,the
group'sfirststageprop.
In1965,theSpidersrecordedtheirfirstsingle,"WhyDon'tYouLoveMe"(originallyperformedbythe
Blackwells),withFurnierlearningtheharmonicaforthesong.Thesingle'sBsidetrackwastheMarvin
GayeTamlaRecordshit"HitchHike".ThesinglewasreleasedbylocalrecordlabelMascotRecords,
ownedbyJackCurtis,aconcertpromoterwhoalsoownedtheStage7teenclub,whichlaterbecamethe
VIPClubwheretheSpiderswerethehouseband.
In1966,theSpidersgraduatedfromhighschool,andafterNorthHighSchoolfootballerMichaelBruce
replacedJohnTatumonrhythmguitar,thebandreleasedtheirsecondsingle,"Don'tBlowYourMind",
anoriginalcompositionwhichbecamealocal#1hit,backedby"NoPriceTag".[14]Thesinglewas
recordedatCopperStateRecordingStudioandissuedbylocalmicroimprintSantaCruzRecords.
By1967,thebandhadbeguntomakeregularroadtripstoLosAngelestoplayshows.[14]Theysoon
renamedthemselvesNazzandreleasedthesingle"WonderWho'sLovin'HerNow",backedwithfuture
AliceCoopertrack"LayDownandDie,Goodbye".Aroundthistime,drummerJohnSpeerwasreplaced
byNealSmith.Bytheendoftheyear,thebandhadrelocatedtoLosAngeles.[14]
Thebandadoptsanewname:"AliceCooper"
In1968,thebandlearnedthatToddRundgrenalsohadabandcalledNazz,andfoundthemselvesin
needofanotherstagename.Furnieralsobelievedthatthegroupneededagimmicktosucceed,andthat
otherbandswerenotexploitingtheshowmanshippotentialofthestage.[14]Thelegendisthatthename
"AliceCooper"camefromasessionwithaOuijaboard,largelychosenbecauseitsoundedinnocuous
andwholesome,inhumorouscontrasttotheband'simageandmusic.However,inaninterviewwith
MarkRadcliffeontheRadcliffeandMaconieshowonBBCRadio2on30November2009Alice
describedtheincidentwiththeouijaboardasanUrbanlegend:"Weliterallygotthatwholestoryabout
thewitchthingthewayyouguysgotit.Itwaslikejustpureurbanlegend.Iheardaboutthewitchthing
probablythesamedayyoudid,butitwasagreatstory."[15]"AliceCooper"wasacharacteron
MayberryR.F.D.(playedbyAliceGhostley)atthetime,probablycoincidentally.EventuallyFurnier
adoptedthisstagenameashisown.Furnier,nowknownasAliceCooper,laterstatedthatthename
changewasoneofhismostimportantandsuccessfulcareermoves.[16]

villain,awomankiller,intatteredwomen'sclothingandwearingmakeup,wouldhavethepotentialto
causeconsiderablesocialcontroversyandgrabheadlines.In2007inhisbookAliceCooper,Golf
MonsterCooperstatedthathislookwasinspiredinpartbyfilm.Oneoftheband'salltimefavorite
movieswasWhatEverHappenedtoBabyJane?starringBetteDavis."Inthemovie,Bettewears
disgustingcakedmakeupsmearedonherfaceandunderneathhereyes,withdeep,dark,blackeyeliner."
AnothermoviethebandwatchedoverandoverwasBarbarella."WhenIsawAnitaPallenbergplaying
theGreatTyrantinthatmoviein1968,wearinglongblackleathergloveswithswitchbladescomingout
ofthem,Ithought,'That'swhatAliceshouldlooklike.'That,andalittlebitofEmmaPeelfromThe
Avengers."[17]
TheclassicAliceCoopergrouplineupconsistedofFurnier,leadguitaristGlenBuxton,rhythmguitarist
MichaelBruce,bassistDennisDunaway,anddrummerNealSmith.[14]WiththeexceptionofSmith,
whograduatedfromCamelbackHighSchool(whichisreferredtointhesong"AlmaMater"onthe
albumSchool'sOut),allofthebandmemberswereontheCortezHighSchoolcrosscountryteam,and
manyofCooper'sstageeffectswereinspiredbytheircrosscountrycoach,EmmettSmith[18](oneof
Smith'sclassprojectswastobuildaworkingguillotineforslicingwatermelons).Cooper,Buxton,and
Dunawaywerealsoartstudents,andtheiradmirationfortheworksofsurrealistartistssuchasSalvador
Dalwouldfurtherinspiretheirfuturestageantics.[19]
OnenightafteranunsuccessfulgigattheCheetahclubinVenice,California,wherethebandemptied
theentireroomofpatronsafterplayingjusttenminutes,theywereapproachedandenlistedbymusic
managerShepGordon,whosawtheband'snegativeimpactthatnightasaforcethatcouldbeturnedina
moreproductivedirection.[14]Shepthenarrangedanauditionforthebandwithcomposerandrenowned
recordproducerFrankZappa,whowaslookingtosignbizarremusicactstohisnewrecordlabel,
StraightRecords.[14]FortheauditionZappatoldthemtocometohishouse"at7o'clock."Theband
mistakenlyassumedhemeant7o'clockinthemorning.Beingwokenupbyabandwillingtoplaythat
particularbrandofpsychedelicrockatseveninthemorningimpressedZappaenoughforhimtosign
themtoathreealbumdeal.AnotherZappasignedact,theallfemaleGTOs,wholikedto"dressthe
CooperboysuplikefullsizeBarbiedolls,"playedamajorroleindevelopingtheband'searlyonstage

Cooper'sfirstalbum,PrettiesforYou(releasedin1969),hadaslightpsychedelicfeel.Althoughit
touchedtheUSchartsforoneweekatNo.193,itwasultimatelyacriticalandcommercialfailure.
AliceCooper's"shockrock"reputationapparentlydevelopedalmostbyaccidentatfirst.Anunrehearsed
stageroutineinvolvingCooper,afeatherpillow,andalivechickengarneredattentionfromthepress
thebanddecidedtocapitalizeonthetabloidsensationalism,creatingintheprocessanewsubgenre,
shockrock.[14]Cooperclaimsthattheinfamous"ChickenIncident"attheTorontoRockandRoll
RevivalconcertinSeptember1969wasanaccident.[14]Achickensomehowmadeitswayontothestage
intothefeathersofafeatherpillowtheywouldopenduringCooper'sperformance,andnothavingany
experiencearoundfarmanimals,Cooperpresumedthat,becausethechickenhadwings,itwouldbeable
tofly.[14][22]Hepickeditupandthrewitoutoverthecrowd,expectingittoflyaway.Thechicken
insteadplummetedintothefirstfewrowsoccupiedbywheelchairusers,whoreportedlyproceededto
tearthebirdtopieces.[23]Thenextdaytheincidentmadethefrontpageofnationalnewspapers,and
ZappaphonedCooperandaskedifthestory,whichreportedthathehadbittenoffthechicken'sheadand
drunkitsbloodonstage,wastrue.Cooperdeniedtherumor,whereuponZappatoldhim,"Well,

PiperattheGatesofDawn.GlenBuxtonsaidhecouldlistentoSydBarrett'sguitarforhoursata

Despitethepublicityfromthechickenincident,theband'ssecondalbum,EasyAction,producedby
DavidBriggsandreleasedinJune1970,faredevenworsethanitspredecessor,entirelyfailingtodent
theBillboardTop200.Aroundthistime,fedupwithCalifornians'indifferencetotheiract,they
relocatedtothePontiac,Michigan,area,wheretheirbizarrestageactwasmuchbetterreceivedby
MidwesterncrowdsaccustomedtotheprotopunkstylesoflocalbandssuchastheStoogesandthe
MC5.Despitethis,Cooperstillmanagedtoreceiveacreampieinthefacewhenperformingatthe
CincinnatiPopFestival.Michiganwouldremaintheirsteadyhomebaseuntil1972."L.A.justdidntget
it,"Cooperstated."Theywereallonthewrongdrugforus.Theywereonacidandwewerebasically
drinkingbeer.WefitmuchmoreinDetroitthanwedidanywhereelse."[27]
AliceCooperappearedattheWoodstockesqueStrawberryFieldsFestivalnearToronto,Ontario,in
August1970.Theband'smixofglamandincreasinglyviolentstagetheatricsstoodoutinstarkcontrast
tothebearded,denimcladhippiebandsofthetime.[28]AsCooperhimselfstated:"Wewereintofun,
sex,deathandmoneywheneverybodywasintopeaceandlove.Wewantedtoseewhatwasnext.It
turnedoutwewerenext,andwedroveastakethroughtheheartoftheLoveGeneration".[29]
Inautumn1970,theAliceCoopergroupteamedwithproducerBobEzrinfortherecordingoftheirthird
album,LoveIttoDeath.ThiswasthefinalalbumintheirStraightRecordscontractandtheband'slast
chancetocreateahit.Thatfirstsuccesscamewiththesingle"I'mEighteen",releasedinNovember
1970,whichreachednumber21ontheBillboardHot100inearly1971.Notlongafterthealbum's
releaseinJanuary1971,WarnerBros.RecordspurchasedAliceCooper'scontractfromStraightandre
issuedthealbum,givingthegroupahigherlevelofpromotion.
LoveIttoDeathprovedtobetheirbreakthroughalbum,reachingnumber35ontheU.S.Billboard200
albumcharts.Itwouldbethefirstofeleven[30]AliceCoopergroupandsoloalbumsproducedbyEzrin,
whoiswidelyseenasbeingpivotalinhelpingtocreateanddeveloptheband'sdefinitivesound.[31]
Thegroup's1971tourfeaturedastageshowinvolvingmockfightsandgothictorturemodesbeing
imposedonCooper,climaxinginastagedexecutionbyelectricchair,withthebandsportingtight,
sequined,colorcontrastingglamrockstylecostumesmadebyprominentrockfashiondesignerCindy
Dunaway(sisterofbandmemberNealSmith,andwifeofbandmemberDennisDunaway).Cooper's
androgynousstagerolehaddevelopedtopresentavillainousside,portrayingapotentialthreatto
modernsociety.Thesuccessoftheband'ssingleandalbum,andtheirtourof1971,whichincludedtheir
firsttourofEurope(audiencemembersreportedlyincludedEltonJohnandapreZiggyDavidBowie),
providedenoughencouragementforWarnerBros.toofferthebandanewmultialbumcontract.
TheirfollowupalbumKiller,releasedinlate1971,continuedthecommercialsuccessofLoveItto
Deathandincludedfurthersinglesuccesswith"UnderMyWheels","BeMyLover"inearly1972,and
"HaloofFlies",whichbecameaTop10hitintheNetherlandsin1972.Thematically,Killerexpanded
onthevillainoussideofCooper'sandrogynousstagerole,withitsmusicbecomingthesoundtracktothe

Withastringofsuccessfulconceptalbumsandseveralhitsingles,thebandcontinuedtheirgrueling
scheduleandtouredtheUnitedStatesonceagain.Continuedattemptsbypoliticiansandpressuregroups
tobantheirshockingactonlyservedtofuelthemythofAliceCooperfurtherandgenerateevengreater
publicinterest.Their1973UStourbrokeboxofficerecordspreviouslysetbyTheRollingStonesand
raisedrocktheatricstonewheightsthemultilevelstageshowbythenfeaturednumerousspecial
effects,includingBillionDollarBills,decapitatedbabydollsandmannequins,adentalpsychosisscene
completewithdancingteeth,andtheultimateexecutionpropandhighlightoftheshow:theguillotine.
TheguillotineandotherstageeffectsweredesignedforthebandbymagicianJamesRandi,who
appearedonstageduringsomeoftheshowsasexecutioner.TheAliceCoopergrouphadnowreached
itspeakanditwasamongthemostvisibleandsuccessfulactsintheindustry.Beneaththesurface,
however,therepetitivescheduleofrecordingandtouringhadbeguntotakeitstollontheband,and
Cooper,whowasundertheconstantpressureofgettingintocharacterforthatnight'sshow,was
consistentlysightednursingacanofbeer.
MuscleofLove,releasedattheendof1973,wastobethelaststudioalbumfromtheclassiclineup,and
markedAliceCooper'slastUKTop20singleofthe1970swith"TeenageLament'74".Anunsolicited
themesongwasrecordedfortheJamesBondmovieTheManwiththeGoldenGun,butadifferentsong
ofthesamenamebyLuluwaschoseninstead.By1974,theMuscleofLovealbumstillhadnotmatched
thetopchartingsuccessofitspredecessor,andthebandbegantohaveconstantdisagreements.For

legalcomplicationsoverownershipofthegroupname,"AliceCooper"hadbythenbecomethesinger's
newlegalname.SpeakingonthesubjectofAliceCoopercontinuingasasoloprojectasopposedtothe
banditoncewas,Cooperstatedin1975,"Itgotverybasicallydowntothefactthatwehaddrawnas
muchaswecouldoutofeachother.Aftertenyears,wegotprettydrytogether."ManagerGordon

IntheperiodwhentheAliceCoopergroupwassignedtoFrankZappa'sStraightlabel,MissChristineof
theGTOsbecameCooper'sgirlfriend.MissChristine(realname:ChristineFrka),whohadactually
