Wineology

INTELLIGENCE FOR THE WINE CONSUMER

BY LEN NAPOLITANO

Whats Better, Cork or Screw Cap?

Natural cork, the bottle closure used since commercial production
of precision glass bottles, has established itself as an unofficial
industry standard. An alternative to the cork closure has long been
the aluminum screw cap or twist cap. It was the closure on
inexpensive, low-quality wine since the sixties, resulting in a
damaging association for decades. But not anymore. Since around
2000, increasingly more winemakers choose screw cap closures over
natural cork for one or more of the following reasons: reduced costs;
retained fruit freshness; more consistent aging; and reduced chance
that bacteria, known as TCA, will impart a damp, musty smell to the
wine, destroying its fruit aroma.
Another benefit of screw caps is that they allow bottles to be
stored upright instead of lying on their sides. The absence of a cork
closure eliminates the need to keep wine in contact with the cork,
which expands to create a virtual airtight seal within the bottle.
Of all the reasons above, the problem with TCA has been the
driving force behind the growing popularity and acceptance of twist
caps. It is generally estimated that somewhere between 1% to 15% of
all wine is tainted by natural corks containing TCA, though
winemakers, cork manufacturers and wine critics have debated this
number for years. In January 2013, Wine Spectator magazines James
Laube reported 3.7 percent of the 3,269 cork-sealed wines from
California tasted in the Wine Spectator office in 2012 were thought to
be tainted by a bad cork. If you estimate that wine aficionados at the
magazine are about twice as sensitive to TCA-tainted wine than
average wine consumers, it would translate to fewer than 2%
detectable by the average wine consumer. This figure is closer to
where the Cork Forest Conservation Alliance claims TCA

contamination to be: they say current testing indicates only 1% of

wine is tainted by cork-TCA. Regardless of the true number, whats
important is that contamination from cork is on the decline.
The smell from TCA can be too subtle for the average palate to
notice, so certainly consumers have been drinking cork-tainted wines
for years without knowing it. Winemakers, however, are highly
sensitive to cork-taint smell and work hard to keep their products
free from off-odors. Thats why those winemakers who choose natural
cork closures demand rigid quality control from cork suppliers.
Together, they are succeeding at reducing the incidence of corked
wine.
Ironically, there are issues with twist caps, as well. Because of their
air-tight design, caps have on occasion been blamed for aging wines
too slowly, or for a buildup of sulfides inside a bottle, which adds a
subtle smell of rotten egg. Cap manufacturers responded with new
technology that permits a controlled amount of oxygen into the
bottle, matched to the wine style and how soon the wine will be
consumed after bottling (which is difficult to know). Bottom line:
there is no perfect closure.
With tens of thousands of wines entering the market every year,
there is ample room for closing wines with all available options: twist
caps, synthetic corks, aggregate corks (crushed natural cork pressed
into a cork shape) and conventional natural corks. It has become
common for twist caps to close white wines more often than reds,
since they are more likely to be opened and consumed sooner. Red
wines are more age-worthy and corks are proven to enhance wineaging by allowing microscopic amounts of oxygen into the wine.
The advantages and disadvantages of various bottle closures will
play out over the coming decades. Each type will find its niche.
Probably alternative closures will close the more affordable wines and
corks the more expensive wines. But who knows? One thing is sure:
no longer is the twist cap associated with cheap, inferior wine.
Perhaps more important, you shouldnt fret over purchasing wines
closed with natural corks. With any closure, odds are greatly in favor
of the consumer getting a flawless wine red or white, young or old.

or through reassembling the barrels and using

a rotation system to keep the cap wet by
spinning. They can use larger puncheons to give more subtle,
rounder notes to the wine without giving as oaky a
presence liquid volume to surface area matters a lot; the larger
the vessel, the less the influence, everything else being equal.
Post-pressing, most reds are aged either in barrel or in tanks
with some kind of oak adjunct inserted; as with barrel options
so go the adjuncts: winemakers have choices that range from
oak source (American, French, Hungarian, blends and beyond),
to toast level, to toasted or untoasted heads in barrels, and a
slew of options for creating oak effects sans barrels including
beans, cubes, spirals, blocks, sticks-in-chains to fit into barrel
bungholes, and staves of various shapes and sizes for tank
inserts. Think back to your first visit to a big toystore as a kid;
now picture an adult kid and you know how winemakers feel
about their oak options. Its great to have choices, but there are
lots of options, and one is not necessarily better than another.
At the end of the day, oak is like every other part of the
winemaking process: a series of decisions through which the
final wine is realized, and the key thing winemakers must come
to terms with in order to do their best work is that making a
particular decision, or refusing to make it, will have an impact
on that final bottling either way. Winemakers grow and cook
with grapes, and once the process starts, the vessel in which the
fermentation takes place absolutely has an impact but you
must start with the best ingredients possible. Just like cooking.
Enjoy!

Were Master Shakespeare to have included a winemaker in

one of his plays, the famous phrase might have become To oak
or not to oak? That is the question, and that would have been a
spot on assessment, for few things bring on more questions,
anxieties and myths than the discussion of oak usage and
winemaking. Were they able to offer comment themselves, I
imagine a towering oak offering something along the lines of
Chill out and just enjoy because, as with many other aspects of
winegrowing, the discussions tend to complicate and obscure
the reality from the winemakers perspective.
For whites, the decisions come down to the degree, if any, of
oak influence. Many white varieties do not benefit from oak
exposure, and even neutral barrels (barrels used long enough
that oak tannin is no longer perceptible in wines stored therein)
can cause a stylistic miscue since barrels play host to
Oenococcus oeni, the bacteria responsible for malic-to-lactic
acid conversion. Unless extraordinary and expensive
precautions are taken, most winemakers would combine
separate lots of filtered oaked and unoaked whites to arrive at a
blend with the desired level of oak influence rather than hoping
to arrive at an ideal middle through chance in the barrel.
Red wines, though, present a bit of a different set of options.
Oak is useful throughout the production process, so some folks
will be using toasted or untoasted oak shavings at the crusher in
cooler harvests to alleviate any underripe green aromatics or
flavor compounds from methoxypyrazines, which contribute
cigar or tobacco at low levels and green pepper or grassy, herb-y
notes at higher levels. Winemakers can ferment in barrels either
by removing the heads and punching down into upright barrels

LARNER VINEYARD & WINERY

Larner Fte
Since 2001, the Larner Vineyard has been a source of fruit for many
accomplished winemakers in Santa Barbara and Paso Robles
Counties. The majority of wineries that stared sourcing Larner
grapes, back as early as 2001, are still using fruit from the vineyard
today. Most of the 23 clients produce Larner Vineyard designated
wines, not blending the grapes with fruit from other sources. For the
Larner family, it is an honor to be represented on the label of these
limited production wines. This year's Larner Fte will feature six
wineries who source Larner fruit. Each winemaker will be pouring
wines that he/she has made from the Ballard Canyon Estate. 2-5pm,

ROBERT HALL WINERY

The Essence of Paso Robles

Margaret Burrell Hall and Robert Hall

Robert Hall Winery is proof that hard work, determination and attention to
detail really can make dreams come true. The winery was the vision of Robert L.
Hall, a man who after a successful career dabbling in a number of ventures, moved
to Paso Robles to plant vineyards and produce a nationally distributed line of foodfriendly, age-worthy wines.
The winery sources fruit from 300 acres of estate vines in addition to purchasing
fruit from other quality growers spread across the Paso Robles AVA. Using 100%
Paso Robles grapes, winemaker Don Brady delivers The Essence of Paso Robles in
each one of the varietals and blends produced. He has worked with the same
vineyard blocks for thirteen years and has developed a consistent house style. The
wines are offered at an extremely good value for premium winethis was one of
Roberts missions since he wanted consumers to be able to enjoy the wine every day
with friends and family.

Friends and Family Enjoying Wine Together

The hospitality center and tasting room were also built with a vision of friends
and family enjoying wine together. The many picnic areas offer places to sit and
relax while enjoying the spectacular views of the surrounding, oak-studded
vineyards. Ideally suited for events, the winery often hosts winemakers dinners,
port and cigar events and wine club parties. The facilities are also available for
private events and on several weekends you may catch a glimpse of a bride
celebrating her special day.

Guided Cavern Tour, Barrel Tasting

Come visit Robert Hall Winery and take an
educational guided tour of their 19,000 square foot
wine cavern and production facility (complimentary
with tasting). Enjoy a barrel sample along your
journey to see how wine matures in the barrel. End
up in the tasting room where Robert Hall Winerys
goal is to capture the Essence of Paso Robles in
their wines. Taste their limited production Cavern
Select lineonly available at the tasting room or on
their website.

Wine Tasting and Tours

The winery launched the Cavern Select line two years ago as a direct to consumer
offering of very limited production wines only available in the tasting room, through the
wine club, or on the winerys website. The wine tasting ($10) features the Cavern Select
line predominately in the tasting list. Other wines are available for purchase. Cabernet
Sauvignon is the winerys most widely produced wine, however they make a number of dry
whites, dry reds and dessert wines including several Rhone varietals and blends.
The tasting room staff are extremely knowledgeable and are not only happy to answer
any questions, they will also take you on a tour of the wine cavern and production
facilities. While touring the cavern, guests learn about the various sizes of oak barrels and
how wine is made at Robert Hall Winery. Some days they even offer a special treata taste
of wine from the barrel. These tours are available every day as a complimentary perk to
make each guests visit special.

Robert Hall Wines & Bocce

Bring your glass outside and play a little bocce. But
beware, this game of leisure is serious fun at Robert
Hall. There are two spectacular regulation bocce
courts in the old world style, with crushed oyster
shells and a layer of oyster shell "flour." The great
thing about bocce is that all ages can join in, so bring
the whole family. Call 805.239.1616 ext. 13 to reserve
a court or email tastingroom@roberthallwinery.com.

Wine of the Month

Each month the winery features a wine as the wine of the month and offers a 10%
discount. The wine of the month for November is Robert Halls Cuve de Robles, a Rhonestyle blend. This wine pairs perfectly with a wide range of food and is an ideal bottle to
bring to Thanksgiving Dinner.
Although Robert died at the age of 85 last year, the winery will continues to operate
following his vision under the guidance of his wife, Margaret Burrell Hall. The dedicated
staff, who were proud to have worked with the man who followed his dreams, are still
offering hospitality to guests in the manner Robert taught them.

Entering Magnavino Cellars, located in a small industrial complex in Oxnard, you

will be enchanted and transported into a charming Tuscan wine bar. Robert Wagner, his
wife Barbara or one of their knowledgeable staff will greet you. Prepare to be seduced by
the wines, the people, the ambience, and Roberts dream come true. Welcome to
Magnavino Cellars and its magic.
Twenty years ago, travelling through Tuscany during harvest, Robert (an
advertising/marketing professional by trade) experienced his personal aha moment. As
Robert reflects, he felt his heart flutter, and in an instant knew that one day he wanted to
make wine, and convey the same experience to others. Learning winemaking during his
spare time, Roberts initial production, for family and friends, was about 10 years later.
Being an accomplished chef, Robert and Barbara began hosting home food and wine
parties, which kept growing in size and demand. Branching out with production, in
2008 the initial Magnavino Cellars commercial vintage was released, and in 2010 the
Wagners opened their Tuscan themed tasting room.

Awards and Accolades

In the last few years, Magnavino Cellars has been awarded over 70 medals in
competitions such as the West Coast Wine Competition (Sonoma), SF Chronicle Wine
Competition, SF International Wine Competition, L.A. International Wine Competition,
and several others. The 2011 Petitie Sirah was awarded double gold and named Best of

Always a Reason to Throw a Party

Something is always going on at Magnavino! Public
events, private parties, wine club parties with food, with wine,
laughter and fun always flowing. Friday nights are typically a
theme night such as trivia night, comedy night, Italian night,
etc. If there isnt catered food, you will generally find gourmet
food trucks (such as Cousins Maine Lobster) outside. The
winery is an extension of the tasting room and Robert finds
pleasure in conducting barrel tastings, winery tours and
specially arranged pairings for his guests. If its a wedding,
rehearsal dinner, anniversary or other special celebration, the
winery/barrel room will be transformed into an enchanted,
twinkly wonderland.
Visit Magnavino Cellars and experience the magic that
Robert felt two decades ago while travelling in Tuscany. Robert
and Barbara constantly strive to give each and every visitor to
this Italian haven their own special aha moment.

J. LOHR VINEYARDS & WINES

Merlot A Solid Grape with Solid Roots

Red Winemaker, Steve Peck, and

J. Lohr President, COO and Director of Winemaking, Jeff Meier

24

Ask wine aficionados how, and when, they first fell in love with Merlot, and the
answers may be as varied and mysterious as the perceptions about this luscious
grape. Then again, one can always get the party started with teasers about the
varietys origin and meaning (hint: it has something to do with the French language
and blackbirds), or inquiry into the number of acres planted worldwide
(approximately 600,000).
Here in California, Merlot is the second-leading planted red variety, just behind
Cabernet Sauvignon. While Merlot hails from the respected Right Bank of
Bordeaux, France, it has found an internationally recognized sister home in Paso
Robles, and particularly among the benchmark varietals and blends of J. Lohr
Vineyards & Wines.
J. Lohrs Paso Robles Merlot story charts back to 1988, when J. Lohr released its
Cypress Merlot. With each vintage came greater insight into how to leverage Pasos
microclimates and ideal conditions for Bordeaux varieties, and in 1997, J. Lohr
released its J. Lohr Estates Los Osos Merlot. Merlot is naturally drawn to deeper
soils with higher water-holding capacity, and Merlots flavors are best when the
grape skins are able to cool at night a defining characteristic of Paso Robles
diurnal temperature swings. With the goal of ensuring the highest quality, and the
most consistent flavors each vintage, J. Lohr planted additional Merlot estate
acreage in Creston, where the cool, maritime influence from the nearby Templeton
Gap makes the vineyard 4-5 degrees cooler than J. Lohrs home ranch by the winery
along Airport Road.
Like the soils of some of the most celebrated vineyards in Bordeaux, the soils J.

Wine Country This Month <<

Lohr has selected for growing Merlot are predominantly calcareous, mixed
with clays and gravels. This soil profile tends to yield more bright fruit and
perfume notes, and a softer mouthfeel, than sandy, low-water holding capacity
soils. Now in his 32nd vintage with J. Lohr, President, COO and Director of
Winemaking Jeff Meiers viticultural and oenological passion for Bordeaux
varietals and blends led him to travel to, and explore, the great Bordelais
winegrowing regions of Pomerol, St. Emilion and Pauillac. Enchanted with
the Premier Grand Cru Class wines and their use of blending varieties to
achieve elegance, complexity and aging potential, Jeff, along with Founder
Jerry Lohr, conceived the coveted, limited-release J. Lohr Cuve Series. In
1997, J. Lohr released its debut Merlot-based Cuve POM, and in 1999, the
Series became a trio of wines inspired by their namesake regions.
Taking its cue from one of the most famous and rare wines in the world,
Chteau Ptrus, the 2011 J. Lohr Cuve POM is the first vintage to incorporate
a double-digit percentage of Malbec, complemented by 5 percent each of
Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Bright aromas of plum and
pomegranate are spiced by a bouquet of cedar and cocoa powder, and a
restrained palate weight, bright acidity and luxury-soft mouthfeel make this
wine a chefs favorite.
Among the family owned and operated wineries many celebrated wines,
visitors to J. Lohrs two inviting wine centers in San Jose and Paso Robles will
find the 2013 J. Lohr Estates Los Osos Merlot. According to Red Winemaker
Steve Peck, whole berry fermentation, coupled with 14% Malbec, accentuates
the brighter fruit tones of the Los Osos Merlot and leaves ripe, soft tannins on
the palate.
With harvest complete, and the promise of Thanksgiving and cherished
holidays with family and friends ahead, this is a time to slow down and savor
lifes bounty, particularly that which is born from the earth. Consider
celebrating this festive season with a Merlot from among J. Lohrs signature J.
Lohr Estates and J. Lohr Cuve Series tiers.

Wine Tasting in San Luis Obispo County

ts no wonder the people here

call it SLO. No one is in any hurry
in the cafs or on the sidewalks, and
certainly no one is in any rush to
leave. Strangers are genuinely
friendly, always ready to talk about
their favorite hiking trail or
barbecue joint, or to point the way
to the winery with the best Pinot
Noir. Its all part of the SLO life, that
combination of good stuff that
makes visiting here so nourishing to
the soul.

San Luis Obispos unusual natural

beauty, along with its gentle climate,

first attracted the Spanish padres to
the area in the 1700s. In 1772 they
built the fifth of Californias 21
missions here, on the banks of San
Luis Creek, and named it Mission
San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Today,
many consider this the most beautiful of the Spanish missions.

More than 200 wineries produce

critically acclaimed vintages in
Paso Robles, Edna Valley and
Arroyo Grande Valley. Visitors can
head out along the gorgeous
country roads to sip their way
through the vineyards.

San Luis Obispo Wine Country: Six Themed Tasting Trails

The themed trails include Avila Valley, which
offers a full day of wine tasting at and near the
beach; Backroads, showing off the rolling
vineyards and storybook terrain of Edna Valley;
Urban Wine Trail, featuring SLOs urban tasting
scene; Old Edna & Biddle Ranch, focusing on the
most concentrated vineyard plantings in the region,
highlighting signature local varieties such as Pinot
Noir, Chardonnay and aromatic whites; Arroyo
Grande Valley, the southernmost trail offering
ocean views at one end and rustic hills at the other;
and Points North, highlighting the Rhne and
Bordeaux varieties that thrive in the warmer
climates to the north.
Wine trail visitors are invited to tag
#slowinetrail and share their comments, favorite
trails and photos as they explore.

San Luis Obispo (SLO) Wine Country on

Californias Central Coast may be a small
oceanfront region, but the wine tasting possibilities
are almost limitlessas evidenced by the six
themed tasting trails.
Visitors can build local itineraries around a
range of lifestyles and wine styles, from urban
tasting rooms to beachfront wine tasting. The trails
are highlighted in the new SLO Wine Country
tasting maps, as well as at www.SLOWine.com.
SLO Wine Country is an intimate coastal
region with less than 30 wineries, but theres also a
ton of diversity here, too, said Heather Muran,
executive director of SLO Wine Country. These
wine trails really showcase all that we have to offer,
and they enable you to follow your personal tastes
and timeline as you tour the region.

Good to Know Before

Heading to the Wineries
BY ChARLeS NeAVe
For the most part, going wine
tasting is about the easiest thing in
the world, especially in California
where wineries and tasting rooms
abound. Mostly, wine tasting is a
matter of doing a little research and
planning your day. Here are some
tips that have proven to be helpful
and are designed to help make the
sensory adventure of wine tasting all
the more enjoyable.
Before you start off, pack a few
essentials. Water (plenty of water)
and something to snack on
crackers or a baguette. Many
wineries have picnic areas and there
are plenty of delis and bakeries that
can make up a lunch for you, or
make your own.
Be sure to nibble during the day and
make time for lunch. Two tips: drink at
least twice as much water as you do
wine, and remember that you dont
have to drink everything poured
into your glass.
Dont be afraid to ask questions. Time
again I have heard knowledgeable
winery workers say that there is no
such thing as a stupid question, and
they mean that.
You can drink what you want, in the order
you want. If you like reds, say so; if
you dont like sweet wines, speak
up. But the idea of starting with
whites, then going on to reds and
then sweet wines is a good guide.

If there is a particular wine you want to

try and it is not on the list, ask. Most
tasting rooms are happy to pour a
little if you show enthusiasm.

Look for tasting rooms in towns. Many

of these are cooperative tasting
rooms, where in one place you
might find wines from a dozen or
more small-to-medium premium
producers.

A Tasting Experience to Remember

WILD HORSE WINERY

Wild Horse Winery may be known for its superb Pinot Noirs, but it will soon have
much more to offer. The winery is expanding its wine list and will soon have a Pinot
Gris, a GSM and a White Rhone available for customers. These new wines will be
released next year.

Wild Horse Wines are Constantly Evolving

Since Wild Horse Winery is situated on a former stomping ground for wild mustangs, it
carries with it the spirit of these unbridled animals. Winemakers constantly adjust their
techniques and focus to meet new conditions and make the best wines possible. Each year,
representatives locate the best grapes found on the Central Coast, and make decisions
about what wines to make based on which fruit is of the highest quality. For this reason,
the types of varietals Wild Horse has to offer may change from year to year.
However, there are some things that wont change. For example, you will always be able
to experience the winerys high-quality Pinot Noirs. We offer five different Pinot Noirs in
the tasting room, all from different vineyards along the coast, and each with a distinct
flavor profile, ranging from classic California fruit-forward Pinot to an earthy, delicate
French Pinot, said Leslie Churchill.
Some of the Pinot Noirs available at this time include:
2013 Wild Horse Unbridled Pinot Noir Arroyo Grande Valley
2012 Wild Horse Cheval Sauvage Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley
2013 Wild Horse Unbridles Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County
2013 Wild Horse Unbridled Pinot Noir Righetti Vineyard Edna Valley

Make a Wine Tasting a Special Event

Wild Horse Winery also provides event space for small dinners, receptions and group
tastings. Visitors looking for a rustic and casual wine country experience can find the
perfect venue for their rehearsal dinner, special celebrations or group tastings. There is
more information about event bookings on Wild Horse Winerys website.
Wild Horse Winerys tasting room is open seven days a week, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m. The winery is closed Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day
and New Years Day. It is open until 2:00 p.m. on New Years Eve.
>> BY CAThY NeuShAL

A visit to Wild Horse Winery can provide a one of a kind

wine tasting experience. You can try high quality wines
only available at the winery, picnic on the picturesque
grounds surrounded by olive groves and oak trees, or
visit the winerys vegetable garden, featuring exotic
species of produce. You might also want to meet the
resident llamas: Dolly, Floyd the Llama and Salvador
Dolly. They love apples and carrots, so you will want to
come prepared.
While the tasting room has many of Wild Horses most
popular wines available for sampling, it also has some
reserve ones you wont be able to find anywhere else.
These include five varieties of Pinot Noir, Verdelho,
Chardonnay, Viognier, Malbec, Blaufrankisch, Malvasia
Bianca, Viognier and much more. Tastings fees are $5
per person for five samples. Visitors can also purchase
a cheese and charcuterie plates for $15 to go with their
wine.
Another way to have a unique wine tasting experience is
by booking a grape to glass tour. Visitors have a chance
to observe the entire wine making process. They start in
the vineyard and progress through each of the steps
Wild Horse winemakers take to produce award-winning
wines. The tour ends with a special wine tasting. It is
$15 per person, and complimentary for Wine Club
members and up to three guests. These tours are
available Saturday and Sunday. Call (805)788-6310 to
make a reservation.

Peachy Canyon Winery
Offers Award-Winning Wines
On the southern side of Paso Robles Highway 46 West sits an
understated, historic schoolhouse-turned-tasting room, serving up
wines that are anything but understated. This is the tasting room for
Peachy Canyon Winery, recently listed in the top 101 Wineries in

accomplished chefs, wine critics, industry experts and sommeliers.
Peachy Canyon is most famed for their collection of vineyard

elegant, lighter Zinfandels that showcase the grape in an entirely
original way. In the past five vintages, Peachy Canyon Winerys
Zinfandel wines have accumulated over forty 90-point-plus scores
from well established critics like Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator,
San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and Stephen Tanzer.
In addition, Peachy Canyon also produces a series of premium
Bordeaux-style and specialty red blend wines. Para Siempre
Peachys top-tier Bordeaux blend, based in Petite Verdot, Cabernet
Sauvignon and Cabernet Francwas awarded Gold by the San
Francisco Wine Competition, as well as 91 points from Wine
Enthusiast. Theres also Ms. Behavea rich, multi-award winning
Malbecand two Cabernet Sauvignons, including an especially
expressive 36-month in-barrel Old Schoolhouse Reserve Cab. Each
of these wines shows the dedication to quality found in Peachys
family-led and surprisingly small winery team.
Speaking of, newly appointed Peachy Canyon Winemaker
Robert Henson brings 20 years of wine industry experience to this
team. Henson brings a winemaking philosophy that hinges on
balance in all thingsfrom art versus science of winemaking

Wine Tasting in Santa Barbara County

Bien Nacido Vineyard | Photograph by Jeremy Ball

A Spirit and Passion for Winemaking

O

n the southern end of the Central Coast appellation, lies Santa Barbara Countys historic
wine growing region. The first vineyard production in these rolling coastal hills dates back
to 1782, when Junipero Serra planted vines on Mission land. About a hundred years later,
there was 260 acres of luscious vineyards and seventeen winemakers in Santa Barbara
County. Sadly, the Prohibition Era destroyed many of these historic vineyard sites and mostly
put an end to winemaking in the regionas was the case in many of the beautiful winegrowing regions across the state. With that being said, the spirit and passion for winemaking
never left Santa Barbara County, and this wine growing region is alive and well today. Talented
winemakers are producing outstanding and pure terroir driven wines from the five American
Viticultural Areas (AVAs), planted mostly to Burgundian, Rhne and Bordeaux grape varieties.
Although the movie Sideways is said to have put San Barbara Countys wine growing
region on the map in 2004, especially the Santa Maria Valley AVA, it is the high quality of the
wine across the county that has continued to uphold this bountiful regions reputation.
Sprawling vineyards and gently rolling hills create a picturesque scene for visitors and locals
alike, who visit the many wineries, tasting rooms and wine bars in the area. In the five AVAs,
wine tasters will find a nice range of wine styles amongst the Burgundian, Rhne and
Bordeaux varietals that are produced.
In the more northern region, cool climate Burgundian varietals reign, such as Pinot Noir
and Chardonnay, due to the maritime influence. This ensures a long temperate growing
season which the Burgundian varietals crave. With ample amount of sunlight, the grapes ripen
very slowlyperfect for producing terroir driven wines with pure varietal characteristics. In
the southern region, there is more of a diurnal shift with warmer nights and cooler days. This
area sees less fog and has different soil types than what is found closer to the coast. The
Bordeaux and Rhne varieties flourish in this warmer climate and the sandy soils with limestone and chalk impart a wonderfully desirable minerality in the wines.
The wineries in Santa Barbara County boast a concentration of incredibly passionate and
talented winemakers; join them year round at their many events, celebrations and festivals, as
well as in their tasting rooms.

ml bottles (or 24 half bottles) or 307.2
ounces total, which comes from 30
pounds of grapes.

An acre of vineyards land can give the

grower: Five tons of grapes (though it is
also less, depending on a variety of farming
and winemaking practices, and on the varietal and the vineyards location) which will
give you 797 gallons of juice (or thirteenand-a-half barrels) which is pretty close to
four thousand bottles of wine.

Walk Around Tasting

A Walk Around Tasting is a

combination of a tour and a tasting.
Your host brings along several
bottles of wine on your tour, and
may take you to a garden area of
the winery to pour the first round.
Then you move to another place
within the winery to sample the
next wine. This experience
continues until all the wines are
tasted.

Barrel Tasting

www.WineCountryThisMonth.com

Another popular tasting experience that can be part of a tour or a

Walk Around is a Barrel Tasting.
Your guide takes a wine thief, a
special siphon placed into a hole in
the top of a barrel to extract tasting
samples of a maturing wine. The
sample allows you to taste what the
wine is like in the middle of developing its full potential.

Why make an appointment?

A Sit Down Tasting usually

requires an appointment, and there
may be a slightly higher fee than a
wine bar fee. Seated in an elegant
room, you are poured several wines
by your winery host. Expect your
host to describe the unique characteristics of each wine and how it
was made.

The most common tasting experience is a Wine Bar Tasting. You

step up to the bar where typically a
list of wines being poured is
displayed. Expect to pay a tasting
fee between $10-$40. Some tasting
bars will offer you the option to
taste a library or reserve wine.
Exercising this option increases the
fee, but will allow you to taste very
unique, old or rare wines.

Sit Down Tasting

Wine Bar Tasting

Some wineries are so small that

they need to know when you are
coming so someone will be there
to greet you. Others have sit-down
tastings that start and end at
specific times. Its always a good
idea to schedule your appointments well in advance.

Santa Maria Wineries & Restaurants

Costa de Oro Tasting Room & Marketplace
Costa de Oro Tasting Room & Marketplace is located right off of
Highway 101 in Santa Maria. This site pays tribute to the history
behind Costa De Oroit was the strawberry stand for Gold Coast
Farms, the parent company of Costa De Oro, which has been farming
Santa Maria since 1978. Gold Coast Vineyard was planted to 20 acres
of Pinot Noir and 10 acres of Chardonnay in 1989, and these grapes
were sold to the areas best wineriesincluding Au Bon Climat. Gary
Burk, Costa de Oro Co-Owner and Winemaker, was fortunate to
work in the winery with Jim Clendenen from 1994-2002, and during
this time he began to make his own wine. Gary started with just one
barrel of Chardonnay and one barrel of Pinot Noir.
Today, Costa de Oro produces over 6000 cases featuring
Chardonnay & Pinot Noir from the estate Gold Coast Vineyard.
The best place to experience the wines is at the Tasting Room and
Marketplace, where guests can taste five wines for only $10. In
addition to regular tasting room hours (normally 11:00 a.m. to 6:00
p.m. daily), each Friday evening, Costa de Oro hosts Friday Night
Wine Downs featuring live music from local musicians and $12
dinner plates prepared by Chef Rick! Another facet to the Costa de

Oro portfolio is their Wine on Tap. Kegged wine, wine stored and
shipped inside five gallon kegs instead of bottles, has been gaining
popularity throughout the past several years. Costa de Oro started
kegging wine for high-end accounts, like Roys Hawaii. Now these
wines, a white and a red are available in the tasting room by the glass
and by the growler (these can be refilled). Costa de Oro Wine Club
members receive discounts on keg wines, bottled wines and
complimentary tastings.

LOS ALAMOS

Bell Street Farm is an acclaimed eatery and market in the heart of

wine country in historic Los Alamos. A must-see destination for
residents and visitors alike, the country chic setting offers a warm
and inviting atmosphere to enjoy a meal, snack, regional beers or to
sample local wines.
I work with local artisans, food purveyors, winemakers and
farmers to create a distinct dining and retail experience at Bell Street
Farm, says Jamie Gluck, owner of Bell Street Farm. The space is an
expression of my lifelong passion for fine foods and we use only the
freshest ingredients found along the California Coast.
The eatery was designed in 2011 and reflects elements found from
the original 1916 building with a modern charm. Gluck scoured the
area to find materials and design elements that would work with the
design. He works with California artisans and manufacturers to create
Bell Street Farm pottery (Los Alamos ceramicist Ramona Clayton),
hand moisturizer and soap (custom blends from California Baby
Organics), extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar, granola, chicken
rub (house-made) and many other select products.
Listed by Yelp as #28 among the countrys Top 100 restaurants,
Bell Street Farms menu offerings include sandwiches with locally
made breads and California cheeses, farm fresh salads with vegetables
and greens from local farms, renowned crispy house-roasted
porchetta, rotisserie Red Bird Farm chicken, unique salads and housemade cookies, pots de creme, sweets and coffee drinks.
All retail offerings are carefully selected to reflect the local area
experience and include picnic baskets, table cloths, candles and more.
Bell Street Farm also offers custom-designed picnic baskets for groups
of two to 200 and holds 3rd Saturdays suppers and custom dinners
and parties, both on-site and at unique locations.
Located by the distinctive flagpole in the heart of Los Alamos,
Bell Street Farm is just 45 minutes north of Santa Barbara and 75
miles from Paso Robles. The eatery and market is open Thursday
11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Friday, Saturday and Sunday 11:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. and Monday 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Contact Jamie
Gluck at (805) 344-4609 or jamie@bellstreetfarm.com to inquire

Visit the quaint shop that has been referred to as

red wine pairing heaven with its tempting array of
mouth-watering delectable delights. Staffords uses
strictly locally produced products in their chocolatemaking processes from olive oils and lavender to
wine and beer. The result is satisfyingly rich
delicacies, such as dark chocolate red wine truffles
complete with a rich ganache center and infused
with Santa Ynez Valley red wine. For some
additional fun for the kids, or the kids at heart in your life, pick up
some scrumptious chocolate hedgehogs or a customized caramel
apple.
The next time you visit Los Olivos, reserve a few minutes for
Staffords Famous Chocolates. Try a complementary sample and
indulge your senses with some of the finest truffles, caramels, English
toffees and creams available on the Central Coast. You will quickly
see why Staffords received the Peoples Choice Award at the Santa
Barbara Rape Crisis Centers Chocolate de Vine 2014.
Visit the shop Friday through Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.,
located at 2902 San Marcos Road, Unit D, in Los Olivos. For more

Chocolates, the shop hums with the steady
work of chocolate making. Youll find no
conveyor belts or massive machines churning
out truffles though. Peoplechocolatiers
craft each piece one by one, hand crafting and
hand dipping with the skill of an artist. They
are creating a red wine truffle, an old fashioned
pecan turtle or something truly spectacular,
like the Ooey Gooey Bar, a combination of marshmallow, peanut
butter and caramel dipped in chocolate, topped with nuts.
Staffords flagship location resides in Porterville, and the family
owned and operated business opened its second location in 2012
among the proud residents of Santa Ynez wine country. If you take a
stroll through downtown Los Olivos, you will take in numerous
historical sights while indulging in the towns rich love for art, wine
and food. Staffords embraces the small town, contributing to its local
culture and economy while being very delighted to call the towns
renowned water tower home.

Los Olivos Wineries

Toretti Family Vineyard
Santa Maria is a bit of a difficult place to describe to Pinot-philes
who havent been there. Its basically a cowboy town full of ranchers
and farmers and big, manly trucks. Lots of cowboy hats, cowboy
boots and big belt buckles. Not exactly the backdrop most imagine
of when daydreaming about wine country, especially that of the
refined Pinot Noir. Nevertheless, the Santa Maria Valley produces bar
none, some of the finest Pinot Noirs that the entire state of California
has to offer. You just have to come to grips with the image of
cowboys and an open fire grill lined with sizzling beef in your fantasy.
One such cowboy figure is Bob Torres. Torres family has been in
Santa Barbara Countys Santa Maria Valley for over 100 years. A local
legend himself since he opened his first Pappys restaurant in 1957,
Bob is an old-school Santa Maria guy, with the cowboy hat, cowboy
boots and belt buckle to prove it. He loves this land.
Bob planted five acres of vines on his Santa Maria estate in 2000.
The quality of the fruit was recognized immediately, and Caymus
Chuck Wagner snatched up all he could get. In 2006 Torres bottled
under his own label Toretti Family Vineyard.
Forget the images of cowboy country when you enter their Los
Olivos tasting room. It has a relaxed cowboy atmosphere and reflects
their rich family history. Bobs daughter, Milena manages the tasting
room and will welcome you.
Visit the family at 2933 San Marcos Avenue, Suite 101. Visit their
website, Toretti.com for more about their wines.

Los Olivos Wineries

Enjoy Classic Rhne Varietal Wines at Andrew Murray Vineyards
Andrew Murray fell in love with the classic Rhne varietals,
specifically Syrah and Viognier, in the late 1980s as he traveled
through Frances Rhne Valley. At the time, he was enrolled at UC
Berkeley studying paleontology, but when sampling the wines in
France, there was a shift in his thinking. Capitalizing on this
newfound enthusiasm for wine, he decided to do an internship in
Australia at a winery, focusing on the production of Shiraz. When
Andrew returned to the US, he earned himself a Bachelors Degree in
Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis, and then founded his
eponymous Los Olivos winery and vineyarddedicated exclusively
to his favored Rhne-style wines. Today, Andrew Murray Vineyards
is synonymous with some of the states premier Rhne wines, from
sellout vineyard designated Syrahs to wildly popular blends!
In January of 2014, Andrew expanded his brand when he opened
his new winery and visitor center in the former Curtis Winery
location. He also took over the management of Curtis Estates 100+
acres of premium wine grapes. This opportunity fully realized his
dream to be back on Foxen Canyon Road, growing Rhnes again.
At the tasting bar, they offer a flight of five different wines to
sample and even an option paired with chocolate. Their staff is very
friendly and wine knowledgeable, which allows for a lot of fun
conversation and a bit of wine education for the more curious
visitors. There are several new wine releases available in the tasting
room right now, including the 2013 Roasted Slope, Andrews most

sought after red blend, and their new 2013 Estate Grown Grenache.
There is also the 2013 Esprance, a red blend of Syrah, Grenache
and Mourvdre that was just released. They are also featuring a
limited, single vineyard Syrah right now, the 2013 Syrah Alisos
Vineyard, that was just awarded 94 points by Antonio Galloni. If you
are looking for something like Chardonnay, but different, then you
must try their Roussanne and Grenache Blanc blend, known as the
2013 Enchant.
Andrew Murray Vineyards is conveniently located just a few miles
from downtown Los Olivos, where they have the Tasting Room for
their sister winery, E11even Wines. When you visit the newly
remodeled DTLO location, you will be able to sample Andrews new
wines by his E11even labela nod to a classic rock n roll movie
from the 80swhile listening to vintage vinyl. These new wines are
all Estate Grown in Los Olivos and Santa Maria. The highlight is a
deliciously balanced Pinot Noir from his Gravel Pit Vineyard in
Santa Maria. There is also a Cabernet, a Petit Verdot, and a crisp
Sauvignon Blanc, simply named Unplugged. Andrew Murray
Vineyards Winery & Visitor Center is located at 5249 Foxen Canyon
Road, and is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The E11even
Tasting Room is located at 2901 Grand Avenue in Los Olivos, and is
open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Vino de Sueos event is a wonderful opportunity to
celebrate the workers, who help create Santa Barbara County wines
and put food on the tables, support a great non-profit, and taste and
purchase some local, unparalleled wines.
Vino de Sueos, Wine of Dreams, is was founded to make a
difference in the lives of vineyard and farm workers who are the
very heart and soul of the countys agricultural economy and more
specifically, the vineyard and wine businesses. Founding Participant
Wineries of Vino de Sueos include Alma Rosa, Buttonwood, Clos
Pepe, Feliz Noche, Foxen, Longoria and Presidio.
The Vino de Sueos are sold in order raise funds to give workers
and their families the assistance they need during difficult economic
times. PHP will administer the funds to furnish basic needs (food,
rent and utility assistance) and family support services (counseling,
youth after school programs, parent education and scholarships).
Services are directed to giving families a hand-up to achieve their
dreams of a better life.
Tying the art and wine together on the VDS brand labels is
graphic artist, Kros Andrade of UVA Design Studios. Kros, who
grew up in the Santa Ynez Valley, was immediately interested in
volunteering his services to support farm and vineyard workers.
For the past eight years he has created a beautiful collectors set of
individual labels that are representative of a unique brand.

Vino de Sueos, Wine of Dreams, is a wine brand conceived by

the non-profit human services organization, Santa Ynez Valley
People Helping People (PHP), and a small group of premium Santa
Barbara County vintners.
This year the Vino de Sueos wines will be released at a unique
fund raising event to be held on November 7. The event will be
held in Buellton at the Santa Ynez Valley Marriott from 3:00 to 6:00
p.m. The celebration of Farm and Vineyard Workers, will include
appetizer stations hosted by some of the Valleys premier caterers,
(including New West Catering, The Chefs Touch, S.Y. Kitchen, Chef
Ricks and Decadence Fine Cakes & Confections), live music and a
silent auction of vacation and lifestyle items.
In order to better honor farmers and farm workers, the event will
include local farming information and products for display and sale.
Farmers and workers will be on hand to answer questions and
discuss farming methods and uses of products.
The art auction is another unique aspect of the Vino de Sueos
release and the new brand. Each wine from the brand is labeled
with a reproduction of an original art piece specifically created by
a local artist for the wine. Karina Puente, a product of the Santa
Ynez Valley and its local schools, created one of the art pieces and
the dream icon at the center of each label that identify it as part
of the Vino de Sueos brand. This identifies the wine as part of the
Vino de Sueos brand.

CESAR

Deep Sea Wines are a product of passion for the Conway Family,
whose love of Santa Barbara wine and coastal vineyards is celebrated
in every bottle of Deep Sea. The Conway Family calls Santa Barbara
home, and has always been inspired to produce wines that represent
the coastal influence and unique climate of the region. From this
place, inspiration has produced a variety of wines each speaking of
their origins. Their wines can be tasted at the Santa Barbara tasting
room, located on Stearns Wharf.
The tasting room offerings include the Deep Sea label featuring
wines made from the estate vineyard, as well as other coastal
vineyards. This brand appeals to the modern wine drinker, and
reflects the true passion of the Conways, the ocean and wine. Also
available are wines from the Conway label, which are region specific,
celebrating varieties best suited to their respective appellations. These
bottlings include Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, Chardonnay
from Santa Barbara and Pinot Noir from Sta. Rita Hills. This is an
elevated brand produced from outstanding lots, resulting in wines
of excellent quality, character and agability, explains Gillian Conway.
The Deep Sea tasting room has an experience for every type of
wine taster. Taking in the view of the Pacific Ocean while drinking
Central Coast wine is unbeatable! The wine menus consist of
different tasting options, including, White Only, Red Only and
mixed flights. Deep Sea also offers wine by the glass or bottle with
reasonable pricing. The tasting room hours are Monday through
Thursday from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Friday through Sunday
12:00 to 9:00 p.m. The outdoor patio and deck is now heated and
open at night, for lounging and tasting. Another way to enjoy the
tasting room is to rent it out for private parties; they can accomodate
up to 49 guests. For more information, call (805) 618-1185.

Winery, owned and operated by Michael
Giovinazzo and his wife, Debby.
The name for Sunland Vintage Winery
was inspired by Michaels grandfather,
Giuseppe Giovinazzo, whose original winery
was named Sunland Vintage Company, sold
in 1948. And the old-world labels on todays
wines are copies from his grandfathers
original labels.

Panaro Brothers Winery

BY MeLiSSA VogT

The Italian Panaro family has a longstanding history of making

wine in California. As fifth generation Italian American winemakers,
Panaro Brothers Winery has ample knowledge about handcrafting
California wines in an authentic and traditional Italian style. Making
wine the Old World way refers to the focus on terroirallowing the
fruit and qualities of the vineyard to be expressed in the glass; this is
made possible by gentle oaking, or oftentimes the use of strictly
neutral oak, and incredible attention to detail and quality in the
vineyards. The result is flawless, delicious single varietal and blended
wines that are sure to please every palates preference.
Panaro Brothers Winery is located three minutes away from the
coast in the beachside town of Ventura. The family has been making
wine under the Panaro Brothers Winery name since 2008, but the
tasting room opened up in May of 2012. The tasting room is located
near the Ventura Harbor Village, making this location the perfect
place to spend the afternoon. After enjoying a tasting of Panaro
Brothers fine wines, guests can spend the day shopping and dining
alongside Southern Californias beautiful coastline.

At the tasting room, guests can choose from an array of wines.

There are Italian classics like Dolcettoa lighter style red that boasts
delicious red fruit and nice earthy flavorsas well as more traditional
California offerings such as Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Chardonnay.
Winemaker Vito Panaro carefully crafts these wines from only the
best fruit sourced from Central Coast vineyards in Paso Robles,
Templeton, Los Alamos, Creston, Santa Ynez, San Miguel, Monterey
County and Antelope Valley. With such an array of great fruit from
these premier growing regions, the impressive Panaro Brothers wine
collection is a great way to experience a taste of California with an
Italian twist. Visit for a taste of Italy in California!
