Installing the VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified


Before you begin
Before installing the VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified, verify the following:

You have access to the EMC Online Support website at http://Support.EMC.com.

Your Windows-based client computer is on the same subnet (customer network) as


the Control Station.

Your computer must have at least 500 MB of free space. Internet connectivity is
recommended.

To obtain and install the VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified:


Note

On your computer, disable any firewall software, pop-up blockers, virtual private network
(VPN) interfaces, and VMware network interfaces before running the VNX Installation
Assistant for File/Unified.
To install the VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified:
Procedure
1. Go to the EMC Online Support website at http://Support.EMC.com.
2. Select VNX Series > Install and Configure.
3. From the list of VNX Installation Tools, click the proper version of the VNX Installation
Assistant for File/Unified to install on your computer. Ensure the version of your VNX
for File/Unified system, which is listed on the Control Station sticker, matches the
version of the VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified that you download.

VNX_installation_assistant8.0.1.x Earlier versions of VNX VIA Install do not support


VNX for File/Unified 8.0 systems.
VNX_installation_assistant8.0.1.x does not have
a link at the end of the installation process to a
registration wizard. You must use the
Registration Wizard within the Unisphere Service
Manager (USM) to register your VNX for File/
Unified 8.0 system.

Worksheet information from the Planning Worksheets section of the system install
guide that shipped with your system. This information includes:

2. Your VNX is powered up.


Note

For VNX File/Unified systems with two Control Stations, use the Installation Guide
instructions to ensure that you power-up the Control Stations in the correct sequence.
3. Your VNX and your Windows client are on the same physical LAN.
4. Firewall, pop-up blockers, and VPN are disabled on the Windows client running VNX
Installation Assistant for File/Unified.
5. Cisco Security agent is turned off on the client PC.
6. If VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified cannot detect the MAC address of the
Control Station, ensure that you select the correct LAN network interface card on
which you want to search for the Control Station.
7. If VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified still cannot detect the MAC address of the
Control Station, click Retry Search a few times. If the VNX Installation Assistant for
File/Unified still cannot detect the MAC address then power cycle the Control Station.
Note

It takes several minutes to reboot the Control Station. You can ping the IP address of
the Control Station to make sure the Control Station is rebooted before you continue.
8. If the Control Station still does not respond, use the supplied cross-over cable (P/N
038-003-457 and labeled Service LAN Cable Assembly) to connect to the Control
Station directly from the client PC running VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified,
and perform the following:
a. Disconnect the external network cable to the Control Station. This cable is labeled
MGMT.
b. Configure the Windows client with a static IP address on the same logical network
as used by the Control Station. The netmask and default gateway should be the
same as what the Control Station is using on its network.
c. For a single Control Station, use a straight-through (or crossover) Ethernet cable to
connect the VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified client directly to the
external port on the Control Station (labeled as "eth3").
For a dual Control Station, use three straight-through Ethernet cables to connect
the VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified client, the primary, and the
secondary Control Station to a common switch/hub. For the Control Stations,
connect the external port on the Control Station (labeled as "eth3") to the
common switch/hub. This is required so that the VNX Installation Assistant for
File/Unified can detect both Control Stations.
d. Stop the client's local services for :
CISCO Security Agent
firewall software
network checklist

pop-up blockers
VMware network interfaces
VPN interfaces
wireless communication
e. Reboot the Control Station and wait for the reboot to complete.
f. Restart VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified wizard and click Next on the
Welcome page to initiate the broadcast and discovery process, then continue with
the VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified configuration.
g. Re-enable any services previously disabled such as firewall software, pop-up
blockers, VPN interfaces, Cisco Security Agent, and VMware network interfaces.

Run the VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified


To run the VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified:
Procedure
1. Double-click the shortcut on the desktop or go to C:\ProgramFiles\EMC\VNX
Installation Assistant\startup\launch.bat. The VNX Installation Assistant for File/
Unified guides you through the remaining steps.
2. Click Install to configure a factory installed VNX.
3. Ensure to register your system. Refer to mydocuments.emc.com for information about
registering your VNX.
