Japan borrowed voluntarily because its islands were physically separate from China
Japan lacked lacked Confucian values, giving Japanese women more rights
In Japan, powerful aristocratic families decentralized the government
Vietnam established a bureaucracy because elites were educated into it

One or more sentences
Contains a valid similarity and a valid difference
The development of the Chinese culture along the banks of Chinese river
valleys stemmed the tide for an upsurging wave of culture, as we see by
the Chinese ways of life replicated in the nations that it touched
culturally. Vietnam, under control for 1000 years by the Chinese, was well
rooted into the Chinese system, involved in the tribute system, modeled
their capitol after Changan, developed a new style of writing to separate
themselves from their Chinese neighbors. But so did another case, an
isolated island to the East, Japan, as it followed these similarities to the
dot in comparison to Vietnam.
Evidence (Facts) and Substantiation (Explanation) for the Similarity or
difference. BLUE- 1 point
Vietnam was important to China, the country broke away after 1000
years of being a Chinese vassal state, but was still incorporated into the
tribute system. Also in that tribute system was the smaller island nation
of Japan. Japan was isolated from mainland China, and thus there was no
Chinese take over of the nation. The island nation was able to send
diplomats to perform in the tribute system and sent over scholars to
learn from China. In this way, Japan was able to select morsels of Chinese
culture to devour and make their own, such as the taking of Changan
and modeling two capitol cities after it, Heian and Nara, the development
of a separate language from Chinese characters, and the fostering of
Buddhism by the scholars. The Japanese took the culture from China and
did not involve themselves too much with the huge nation after that,
since it could be selective in its adoption of Chinese culture.
Reason: Why/How is the similarity or difference shared? PINK- 1 point
Both Vietnam and the island nation of Japan were similar during this age
due to the fact that they adopted similar aspects of the Chinese life and
culture, such as Buddhism, the development and architecture from
Changan, and the development of a separate language from Chinese
characters. All of this was done through the trade with China, their
involvement in the Chinese tribute system, and their relative closeness to
China.
The Olympics, a peace bringing event for the world, was restarted in the
late 1800s, just in time to help hold the world together. Although, over
time we have seen a bell curve, with peace at both ends, and the failure
to prevent warfare in the middle. Spawning from its humble origins lay a
spawn of the global world economy, political assertions, and basic human
rights. The Olympics was also a source of growing inequality through
time, as corporations started to take over this big business. Times of
triumph and memories of grandeur lead countries to bolster their efforts
to restore and keep their great status.
Body 1- Grouping 1 BLUE- 1 point
Topic Sentence: Answers the question through introducing your 1st
grouping- Common Characteristics
From the beginning of the revival, just like in ancient times, women were
a small minority in the athletic games, probably due to stigma and
culture surrounding womens strength. Over time that number has grown
from every country participating in the Olympics, probably due to the
social movements in the mid 1900s for womens equality. A common
element of this was national pride, which was taken in by some women
and was adopted as the driving factor. But a growing problem was the
idea of freedom for all.
4. Evidence (Facts) and Substantiation (Explanation) using each
document (source) in the grouping. Answer the question. Refer to the
source (name it) and the document. GREEN- 1 point
- Analyze POV at least once
- Ask for an additional document (source)- Why? How would this help
you answer the question.
The amount of women during the very beginning of the revival of the
Olympic spirit would be shamed by todays standards of equality. In 1908,
a newspaper was reporting on the Olympic games held in Britain, and
reported that only two percent of the athletes were women, a stark
minority. The photograph pictures Sybil Newall, a British Archer who was
representing her country (Doc 2). The photographer and news paper's
thoughts would have been about the rarity of this women in the sports
competition dominated by men; reporting such a rarity, in their minds,
would help enlighten their readers and the world about the inequality
facing women in the international competition. They knew that this
photograph was the catalyst that would drive the movement for equality
in all aspect of life, and would result in an increase in womens
participation, for their nations pride. Fast forward to 1992, the Olympic
games held in Spain, and you will see a noticeable improvement in the
amount of women being involved. Hassiba Boulmerka was one of the
women competitors in the mix, and she was interviewed in 1995 about
her role in and life beyond the Olympics. The newspaper interview
reports on her inequality at home, where social tension and cultural norm
did not allow her to wear shorts, while men could (Doc 8). Her drive is to
promote the ability for more women to be able to join in on this program,
and has a huge national pride on her back. Her wins will bring more
confidence to women and her country involving a huge spike in the
population of women in the Olympic camps. The newspaper also reports
on the fact that 29 percent of the competitors in the games were women,
a huge growth of nearly 1450% from 1902. This was all due to the fact
that women were becoming more confident, and their countries were
beginning to believe in them. Although, we do not see the lists of women
participating from every country, so we can not be specific about the
data until we see the list of individual countries and their participants, so
that we can make a more correct assertion. Halfway around the world in
Pakistan, a split happened between India and Pakistan in 1947, and gave
a promising growth for women. Women were now no longer under the
sway of the Hindu caste system, and could rise above the fray of gender
inequality (Doc 10). This document, however, does not report on the
amount of female athletes that the country sent to compete, and thus
the claims would be better reinforced once we have that. The analysis of
this document leads to the understanding that they had a rivalry with
India, and that rivalry presents a challenge to compete for national pride.
Now that everyone was freed from the caste system, they had the need
to compete with India, and that presented better odds of them doing
because they were good at it, not because their jati forced them to do so.
