CO-2 COOLING SYSTEM - Description
DESCRIPTION
This engine utilizes a pressurized water forced circulation cooling system w h i c h includes a thermostat
equipped mounted o n the outlet side.
RADIATOR CAP
The radiator cap is a pressure type cap w h i c h
seals the radiator, resulting in pressurization of the
radiator as the coolant expands. The pressurization
prevents the coolant f r o m boiling even w h e n the
coolant temperature exceeds 1OO°C ( 2 12OF). A
relief valve (pressurization valve) and a vacuum
valve (negative pressure valve) are built into the
radiator cap. The relief valve opens and lets steam
escape through the overflow pipe w h e n the pres-
sure generated inside t h e cooling system exceeds
the limit (coolant temperature: 1 1 0 - 1 20°C,
( 2 3 0 - 248OF), pressure; 0 . 6 5 - 1 . 0 5 kg/cm2,
( 9 . 2 - 1 4 . 9 psi, 6 3 . 7 - 1 0 3 . 0 kPa). The vacuum
valve opens t o alleviate the vacuum which develops
in the coolant system after the engine is stopped
and the coolant temperature drops. The valve's
opening allows t h e pressure in the cooling system
t o return t o the coolant in t h e reservoir tank.

INSPECTION OF THERMOSTAT
INSPECT THERMOSTAT
HINT: Thermostat is numbered according t o the valve
opening temperature.
(a) Immerse the thermostat in water and heat the water
gradually.
(b) Check the valve opening temperature.
Valve opening temperature:
8 6 - 9 0 ° C ( 1 8 7 - 194OF)
If the valve opening temperature is n o t within specifica-
tion, replace the thermostat.
(c) Check the valve lift.
Valve lift:
8 m m (0.31 in.) or more at 100°C (212OF)
If the valve lift is less than specification, replace the ther-
mostat.
(dl Check t h a t the valve spring is tight w h e n the ther-
mostat is fully closed.
If necessary, replace t h e thermostat.
INSTALLATION OF THERMOSTAT
Jiggle V a l v e
1. INSTALL THERMOSTAT AND WATER OUTLET
(a) Place a n e w gasket t o the thermostat.
(b) Install the thermostat w i t h the jiggle valve facing up-
w a r d as s h o w n in the illustration, and water outlet
w i t h the t w o bolts.

RADIATOR
CLEANING OF RADIATOR
Using water or a steam cleaner, remove any m u d and dirt
f r o m the radiator core.
NOTICE: If using a high pressure type cleaner, be care-
ful not t o deform the fins of the radiator core. If the clean-
er nozzle pressure is 3 0 - 3 5 kglcm2 (427 - 4 9 8 psi,
2,942 - 3,432 ), keep a distance of at least 4 0 - 5 0 cm
(15.75 - 19.69 in.) between the radiator core and clean-
er nozzle.
REMOVAL OF RADIATOR

HINT:
Be careful as some oil will leak out. Catch i t i n a suita-
ble container.
Plug t h e pipe t o prevent oil f r o m escaping.
