Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) is one of Indias primary & integrated steel producers
with a signicant presence in sectors like Mining, Power Generation and Infrastructure.
With an annual turnover of over US$ 3.6 billion, JSPL is a part of the US$ 18 billion diversied O. P. Jindal Group and
is consistently tapping new opportunities by increasing production capacity, diversifying investments and
leveraging its core capabilities to venture into new businesses. The company has committed investments exceeding
US$ 30 billion in the future and has several business initiatives running simultaneously across continents.
With a 0.6 MTPA Wire Rod Mill and a 1.2 MTPA Bar Mill at
Patratu, Jharkhand (India) and 1.5 MTPA Plate Mill
producing plates up to 5.00 meter wide at Angul, Odisha
(India), JSPL has one of the widest product range.
From the widest at products to a whole range of long products, JSPL today sports a product portfolio that caters to
varied needs in the steel market. The company also has the distinction of producing the worlds longest 121 meter
Rails and introducing large size Parallel Flange Beams in India.

Indian Railways in its Vision 2020, has taken a mission to grow from its present capacity
of carrying 8.9 Billion passengers and 1 Billion tonnes of freight on its 65,000 Km route
to a capacity of carrying 15.2 Billion passengers, more than 2 Billion tonnes of freight
with its routes extended to more than 85,000 Kms. With Direct Freight Corridors &
High Speed Routes, both freight & passenger trac on important routes would have
increased speed & capacity.
JSPLs drive for innovation and market leadership is clearly manifested in its Rail
Manufacturing operations. Building on its 25 years of steel making expertise and its
world class Rail making facility, the company works closely with rail customers to
develop products that address their needs. JSPL is playing a central role in helping the
Rail industry rise to the challenges of speedy expansions, higher trac volumes, heavier
axial loads and faster train speeds.
Steel Making
Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) is one of Indias primary & integrated steel producers. JSPL has
perfected the process of steel making over the past decades. Adopting state-of the-art technology, JSPL is
fully geared to provide international quality standards of rail steel. With integrated iron making & steel
making facility and in-house power generation facilities, the Raigarh plant is capable of producing rail
blooms of 285 x 390 mm for manufacturing upto 121m long nished Rail conforming to Indian and
international specications.
Hydrogen Control
Gases dissolved in steel may have high detrimental eects like shatter-cracks during usage and must be
controlled in very close limits. At JSPL, Ruhrstahl Heraeus (RH) Degasser is used for cleaning steel from
dissolved gases like Hydrogen, Oxygen and Nitrogen.
The Ruhrstahl Heraeus(RH) degasser is lowered in the Ladle of Liquid Steel and the pressure inside is reduced
to less than 1 mbar. Argon is injected through tuyeres in one of the snorkels, forcing the steel up into the unit
and out again through the other snorkel exposing it through vacuum inside the Ruhrstahl Heraeus (RH)
Degasser. The clean steel from Ruhrstahl Heraeus(RH) Degasser has Hydrogen content less than 1.6 ppm
specied in IRS-T-12.

Rail Rolling
JSPLs Rail & Universal Beam Mill produces superior quality, worlds longest 121 meter long
nished Rails in various specication including IRS T12 2009 certied by RITES.
From the Walking Beam type reheating furnace (120MT/hr), the uniformly heated blooms
are immediately passed through the high pressure primary de-scaler to achieve scale free
surface with design pressure of 300bar. The rolling process includes Break Down Stand (BD),
Intermediate Stand (KV1), Universal Tandem Mill. After Rolling, the Rails are stamped and
cut into the required lengths. JSPL has a Walking Beam Type Cooling Bed of 123 meter to
supply rolled Rail panels of upto 121 meter with automatic concerns.

Long Rails
Rails of 13 meter & 121 meter are quite common now a days. Importance of reducing welded joints has been felt
by railways worldwide, both on economic and technical considerations. Welded Joints have a detrimental eect on
the harmonious interplay between wheel and Rail running surface. This not only disrupts the dynamics of vehicle
movement, but is also a potential weak point from safety considerations particularly with increased wear at welded
joints on account of train speeds and axle loads going up.
On account of multitude problems with sh plated joints and improper thermite welding at the track site like
fractures, high maintenance costs, etc, the requirement of superior quality Welding in factory conditions has been
on the rise. These Long rails would minimize welding at site there by reducing wear and tear and provide extended
lifespan. It would also allow faster laying of tracks.
