preparedtohunttheperpetratorsuntiljusticewasdonefromChurchilltotheSAStotheStrategistswho
plannedtheDDaylandingstoMossad.Thesestoriesofpursuitandthestruggletobalancethescalesof
justicearefullofdramaandtragedy.

PeipertheMurdererofMalmedy
JoachimPeiperandhisviciousbunchofSSthugsmarchedUS285thField
ArtilleryObservationBattalionintoafieldnearMalmedyinJanuary1945
andshotthem.TherewereaseriesofothermassacresofUSsoldiers
whichwereattributedtoPeiper.ThehuntersweremembersofSupreme
HeadquartersAlliedExpeditionaryForce.Theywerehorrifiedbythe
brutalityoftheaction.ItwasalsothebiggestmassacreofUSsoldiersin
theSecondWorldWarandcauseduproaramongtheUSpublic.

DeathCampKommondant
FranzStanglwastheNazicommandantoftheTreblinkaandSobibor
deathcampsinPoland.Hewasresponsiblefortheexterminationof
around900,000men,womenandchildren.Attheendofthewar,he
escapedtoItalywherehejoineda"ratline"organisedbyVatican
officials.Fromthere,hedisappeared.SimonWiesenthalwasasurvivorof
theHolocaust.BornintheUkrainein1908,hewasroundedupwithhis
familyin1939andimprisonedinalabourcampwhereheservicedthe
Germanrailroad.InMay1945,hewasliberatedbyAlliedsoldiersfrom

JosephMengelewhoexperimentedonadultsandchildreninthe
Auschwitzdeathcamps.Hewasaprimetargetandwas,formanyyears,
theworld'smostwantedcriminal.TheHunterswereSimonWiesenthal,
theUNWarCrimesCommissionandevenMossad.Butnoneofthem
succeeded.Wiesenthallackedtheresources.Theofficialinvestigators
madeblunders,twicelettingMengeleslipthroughtheirhands.Mossad
preferredtoconcentrateonEichmann.Afterthewar,thevictorious
powershadliterallymillionsofPOWstoscreen.Amongthemwere22
peoplecalledJosefMengele.Soeventhoughthehuntwasoneforthe
"Angelofdeath"ofAuschwitz,hesimplygotlostinanAmericanPOWcamp.Onceout,Mengelewas

ThestoryoftheJewishAvengersaftertheSecondWorldWarhasbeen
rarelytold.Forthefirsttime,agroupofmenandwomen,nowintheir
80s,telltheextraordinarystoryofhowsomeJewsdecidedafterthewar
hadendedtoseekbrutalandshockingeyeforaneyerevengeonthe
Germans.Theybelievedthatthosewhoddeliveredtheholocausthad

TheycalledhimTheHangman.ReinhardtHeydrich,becameoneofthemosthatedmeninallofoccupied
