Commission Approves Proposed Fish &

Game License Fee Increases____________

The New Hampshire Fish and Game

Commission approved proposed license
fee increases at its October meeting. The
new rules will not be final until approval is
received from the Legislative JLCAR
committee. Most increases would take
effect on January 1, 2016. See a complete
list at www.wildnh.com/funding/fgvalue.html.

The final rules included some revisions from the initial proposal.
The over age 68 annual fishing or combination hunting/fishing
license would cost $5, plus habitat, agent and transaction fee or
fees (it was originally proposed to be $10). Over-68 muzzleloader and archery permits would be $2. Over-68 clam and oyster
permits would be free, with no additional fees. Resident and nonresident annual hunting and fishing guide permits will both be set
at $100. Fishing derby fee changes would take effect in 2017.

Residents who reach their 68th birthday before January 1, 2016,

would continue to be eligible for a free permanent license.
Permits for turkey, bear and pheasant must be purchased.

Under the approved proposal, regular

hunting and fishing license fees would
increase by $10. The basic price (not including
habitat, agent or transaction fees) for resident freshwater fishing
licenses would go from $33 to $43; hunting licenses from $21 to
$31; and combination hunting/fishing from $44 to $54. Annual
hunting and fishing permit fees for nonresidents, who already pay
more, would also increase by $10. One, three and seven-day fishing permit fees would not change. Various miscellaneous permits
would also increase, from special permits for taking additional
deer to recreational lobster permits.

years, likely due to the warmer
weather at the beginning of the
season and the abundance of
natural foods, which can make
deer more difficult to pattern.
Now that the weather has
become more seasonable, hunting conditions should be more
favorable. I have been seeing
lots of deer in my hunting area
and have been receiving reports
of good deer activity throughout the state."

by a properly licensed adult
who is at least 18 years of age.

Veterans DayA time to give thanks

Veterans Day on November 11th is a day to give thanks to all who

have served or are now serving in the United States Armed
Forces, to let them know we appreciate them for their service, for
their patriotism, and for their willingness to serve and sacrifice
for the good of our country. It is a day to honor and show respect
to those men and women from all branches of the service who
courageously served and continue to serve our country in uniform during peace or war.

On Veterans Day recognize our veterans with a special Thank

You For Your Service. A handshake, a pat on the back, or heartfelt greeting will make their day and yours too. On this day
acknowledge and give a special thanks to our aging WWII,
Korean War, and Vietnam era Veterans. As with all veterans they
have earned and deserve our thanks and support.

Dear Friends, the Bible has many wonderful

passages, but none as wonderful as this one.
John 3:16 says, For God so loved the world,
that He gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believes in Him should not perish,
but have everlasting life. Because of God's
amazing love for all of us, He sent His Son to
take our place. Read the Bible. God loves you.
God Bless you all.

The Outside Story - by Joe Rankin ________________________________________________________________

Witchs Broom

Harry Potter rode one during

the Quidditch matches at
Hogwarts. The Wicked Witch
of the West zipped around on
one in the Wizard of Oz.

Were talking, of course, about

witchs brooms. No one knows
exactly why witches were associated with with flying brooms.
But the trope is remarkably persistent. The witch is the perennial favorite in Halloween costume popularity rankings, and
she always carries a broom,
generally a twiggy bundle with
a handle that doesnt look like it
would do much for a floor.

But theres another type of

witchs broom. This one grows
on trees, or, more specifically,
from the tree. Its a tightlypacked mass of shoots, a deformity caused by organisms that
have invaded the tree, or a
genetic mutation.

Witches brooms occur when an

organism attacks the apical
buds of a tree the growing tips
causing a disruption of the
normal growth regulators, especially auxin, which turns off or
slows down the growth of buds
that are away from the tip, said
Kevin Smith, the supervisory
plant physiologist at the U.S.
Forest Services Northern
Research Station in Durham,
New Hampshire.

another example of the intimacy of the relationships among
different groups of organisms
that have been living together
for a very long time.

Hiking The Lakes Region With Gordon Dubois______________________________________________________

Hiking enthusiast Gordon
Dubois will share his stories of
hiking in the Lakes Region, at
Taylor Communitys Woodside
Building, Monday, Nov. 2 at
6:30 p.m. The event is free and
open to the public.

Dubois hails from up-state New

York and spent many summers
with his aunt and uncle who
lived in the Adirondack
Mountains. It was there he
learned a love of the outdoors
hiking, swimming and fishing.
He and his family moved to
Laconia in 1977, but it wasnt
until 1980 that he climbed his
first 4,000 foot mountain with
his 9-year-old son. Ten years
later he tried winter hiking with
a trip up Mt. Hale and was
hooked.

Gordon has hiked extensively

in Northern New England and
the Adirondacks of New York
State. In 2011 he completed the
Appalachian Trail (2,285
miles). He has also hiked the
Long Trail in VT, The
International AT in Quebec,
Canada, Cohos Trail in northern
NH and the John Muir Trail in
CA. Gordon has summated the
New Hampshire Hundred
Highest peaks, and the New
England Hundred Highest, 98
of these in winter.

He spends much of his time

hiking locally and in the White
Mountains with his dog Reuben
and especially enjoys hiking in
the Lakes Region due to the
proximity to his home in New
Hampton. He is also a trail
maintainer for the Belknap

Range Trail Tenders (BRATTS)

and can often be found exploring the many hiking trails in the
area.

Using personal stories and photos from his adventures in the

mountains around the Lakes
Region, he will take you on the
trails near his home. Come hear
about his passion and maybe
find one of your own!
