Lesson Plan 2
Title of Lesson Plan:
Divisibility Rules
Length of Lesson:
40 min
Grade Level:
6
Subject Area:
Math
Standard:
6.N.14 Accurately and efficiently add, subtract, multiply, and divide positive fractions
and mixed numbers. Simplify fractions.
Objectives:
Students will be able to determine if a number is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 or 10
using the divisibility rules
Materials:
Wipe board and Marker
Mad Minute: Division Worksheet
Divisibility Rules Information sheet
4 sets of yes and no signs (can be made out of construction paper and
popsicle sticks for example)
Divisibility Rules Worksheet
Procedures:
Activity 1(3-5 min)
Tell students we are going to a quick review of division by completing a Mad
Minute Worksheet
Place one worksheet facedown in front of each student (when youre ready tell
them to begin and stop them after one minute)
Go over the worksheet by have the students volunteer answers
Have students put the Mad Minute in their math folder
Activity 2 (10-15 min)
Tell students we are going to be talking about the divisibility rules of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,
9 and 10.
Ask if any students know any of the divisibility rules (write them on the board)
Once students have come up with all they can, begin guiding students to discover
the other rules

o First write examples of numbers that are divisible by a given number (i.e.
3: 3, 9, 21, 36, 45, 81, 123)
o If they still do not discover it, give them a clue (i.e. Do you notice
anything about the sum of the numbers? or Do you notice anything about
the last two digits of the number?)
After identifying each rule, give a couple of examples (i.e. is the number
1,684,378 divisible by 2?)
Once all rules are revealed, hand out the divisibility rules information sheet and
tell students to tape or glue the sheet into their math notebook
Activity 3 (10 min)
Divide students into groups and give each group a no sign and a yes sign
Explain that they are going to be given an example and they are to discuss in their
groups the answer (i.e. is 593,565 divisible by 10 or if 596,306 is divided by 3,
will there be a remainder?)
Tell students that when they are asked to give their answers, they are to hold up
either their yes or their no sign
Keep track of points on the board
Activity 4 (10-15 min)
Pass out a divisibility rules worksheet to each student
Tell them that they are to complete this worksheet on their own
If they finish early, they may pass it in and work on their memoirs
Discussion Questions:
*questions will be discussed throughout the lesson such as
1) What do you notice about.?
2) Is this number divisible by.?
3) Will there be a remainder if this number is divided by.?
Evaluation:
-class participation
-in class worksheet
