SECTION III
THEORY OF OPERATION

GENERAL

The 4200 is basically a very Selective Superhetrodyne receiver with a calibrated attenuator
in the input section, and a precision meter and counter in its output for precise level and fre
quency measurements.
The following paragraphs are intended for use with the block diagram on Page 5-18, to give
the operator or technician the basic theory of operation.
Due to the fact that the 4200 Selective Voltmeter is comprised basically of several printed
circuit boards and each board performs a general function, the following will help to familiarize
the board name, its PC number and its function:
INPUT BOARD, PCl: This PC board, in general, provides mixing functions.
LOCAL OSCILLATOR BOARD, PC2: This board basically sets up the frequency range of
the 4200, oscillating between 250,020Hz to 450,000Hz.
LOW PASS FILTER BOARDS, PC3 & PC4: These boards allow only the frequencies in the
range of the 4200 to enter the mixer.
CRYSTAL FILTER BOARD, PC5:

This board contains the bandwidth switch and com

ponents for matching the crystal filters to the surrounding circuitry.

I.F. AMPLIFIER BOARD, PC6: Its function is to amplify the 250KHz I.F. signal and to
convert it to a d.c. current to be displayed on the 4200 meter.
COUNTER BOARD, PC7: This board contains circuitry for converting, counting and dis
playing frequencies.
RESTORED FREQUENCY L.P. FILTER BOARD, PC8: Rejects unwanted signals so that
only the proper one will be displayed on the counter.
POWER SUPPLY BOARD, PC9:

Here a d.c. voltage from the battery is converted into

various higher and lower values. Also contained on this board is circuitry for recharging the
battery and fuses for protecting the 4200.

BLOCK DIAGRAM THEORY

The signal to be measured is basically coupled through the Input Selector, S1, then on
through or attenuated in the attenuator AT1, through PC1Q1 and PC1Q2, Source and Emitter
followers, and if it is in the frequency range of the 4200, it is passed through the Low Pass Filter,
PC3 and PC4 to the Ring Modulator, PC1D2 through D5.
Frequency Selector, PC2S3 selects a certain value of capacitance which causes PC2Q 1 to
oscillate at a specific frequency.

This frequency, in the range of 250,020Hz to 450KHz, is

coupled through Source Follower, PC2Q2 and after being amplified in the Modulator Driver,
PC2Q4, is applied to the Ring Modulator, PC1D2 through D5 as the local oscillator injection.
The output of the Ring Modulator is the difference frequency, 250KHz, which is amplified
in the Filter Drivers, PC1(Q4 & Q5). This 250KHz is routed to one of two Bandpass Filters,
FL 1 or FL2 depending upon the setting of PC5S4, Selectivity Switch, through three stages of
I.F. amplification, PC61C1 through IC3, detected in the Meter Detector PC6(D1 & D2) and
displayed on the Meter MI.
The third I.F. Amplifier, PC6IC3, provides a 250KHz signal to a Balanced Modulator,
PC6(D3 - D4). A 249KHz signal is originated in the Crystal Oscillator, PC6Q5, and coupled
through the Modulator Driver, PC6Q6, to the Balanced Modulator.
The resultant frequency is the difference, a 1KHz signal, which is amplified by the Audio
Amplifier, PC6Q7, through Q12 and applied to the speaker, LSI.
The second I.F. Amplifier, PC6IC2, provides a 250KHz signal through Source Follower,
PC6Q4, to Amplifier PC6Q3 and then to Counter Mode Switch, S6.
Crystal Oscillator, PC7Q 1 generates a 250KHz signal which after being coupled through an
Emitter Follower, PC7Q2, is also applied to the Counter Mode Switch, S6.
The Product Detector, PC7IC1, receives one of the 250KHz signals applied to S6, depending
upon S6's position and a Local Oscillator Signal from an Emitter Follower, PC2Q3.
The mixed output of the Product Detector is applied to the Low Pass' Filter, PCB, where
only the difference frequency is passed to amplifiers, PC7(Q3 & Q4).
Crystal Oscillator, PC7Q5, generates a 1MHz signal that is coupled through PC7Q6, an
Emitter Follower, shaped into a pulse in PC7IC2, and divided by ten, six times in the Decade
Counters, PC7IC3 through ICB.
A 1KHz signal is taken out of PC7IC5, Decade Counter, and coupled through PC1Q3, an
Emitter Follower, and applied to the Input Selector S1 for use in calibrating the 4200.

4/71

3-2

BLOCK DIAGRAM THEORY (Continued)

From PC7IC8 the 1Hz signal is coupled through a portion of an Inverter, PC7IC9, it is then
converted to a 1 second gate in the Dual J.K. Flip-Flop, PC7ICI0. It is then coupled through an
Emitter Follower, PC7Q7, and Amplified in PC7 QI0. This 1 second gate is also coupled back to
other portions of the Hex Inverter, PC7IC9, where after inversion, it is taken out and converted
to triggers and amplified in PC7Q9, the Reset trigger Amp, and the other, Storage Pulse Amplifier
PC7Q8.
Counter Drivers, PC7ICII through ICI6, receives signal information from PC7Q4; a Clock
Pulse from PC7QI0; Reset triggers from PC7Q9, and Storage Pulses from PC7Q8. These Counter
Drivers decode this information and drive the Counter Display tubes, PC7V 1 through V6.
When the 4200 is connected to 115Vac, this voltage is converted to a lower value by Power
Transformer, Tl, and coupled through AC Fuse, PC9Fl, to the Bridge Rectifier, PC9BR1, filtered
and zenered by PC9(CI & ZI), then connected to a section of the Power Switch, S5.
Battery, Bl, furnishes 4.8V through fuse, PC9F2, to Power Switch, S5, then to the DC to
AC Inverter, PC9(Ql,Q2 & Tl), which converts the 4.8V to four different ac voltages.
These ac voltages are converted to dc by the following circuits, -27V Rectifier, Filter,
PC9(DI & C5); -13V Rectifier, Regulator, PC9(D2 & Q3);

~9.6V

Rectifier, Filter, PC9(D3 &

C4); +9.6V Rectifier, Filter, PC6(BRI & C19) and Regulator, PC6(QI & Q2), and are used
throughout the 4200.
Zener, PC9Z2, reduces the battery voltage to 4.3V for use in the Selective Voltmeter
Counter Circuitry and also after being coupled through a section of S5, it is used in PC9R2, the
Battery Test Resistor, for monitoring Bl 's charge.

3-3

DETAILED CIRCUIT THEORY

The signal to be measured is applied as follows, pOSe to BPI (Red), neg to BP2 (black),
which is also chassis ground. The signal is coupled through C1, a 4.0mfd, 200 vdc capacitor to the
Input Selector Switch, S1. When the Input Selector is set in the 600 ohm position, a 604 ohm
resistor is basically switched across BPI and BP2, establishing an input impedance of 600 ohms.
When Sl is set in Bridge position, the signal is coupled directly to the Attenuator AT1, which has
an input impedance of lOOK ohms.
Attenuator AT1 provides attenuation in 10db steps. In the -80 position the signal is coupled
straight through the attenuator. In the -70db position, a 10db pad, comprised of AT1 (R3 & R9)
attenuates the signal 10db. In the -60db position, a 20db pad, AT1 (R4 & RIO), attenuates the
signal20db. -50db position, AT1 (R5 & R11) provide 30db of attenuation.
In the -40db position, AT1 (R6 & R12) provide 40 db of attenuation.
AT1 (R 1 & R2) provide 50db of attenuation in the -30db position.
In the -20db attenuator position, a 50db pad, AT1 (R1 & R2) is added to a 10db pad, AT1
(R3 & R9) making a total of 60db of attenuation.
-10db attenuator position, 50db pad, AT1 (R1 & R2) plus 20db pad, AT1 (R4 & RIO) add
for 70db total. Odb atten. position, 50db pad, AT1 (R1 & R2) plus 30db pad, AT1 (R5 & R11),
add for 80db total. +10db atten. position, 50db pad, AT1 (R1 & R2) plus 40db pad, AT1
(R6 & R12) add for 90db total. +20db atten. position, 50db pad, AT1 (R1 & R2) plus another
50db pad made up of AT1 (R 7 & R8) for a total of 100db of attenuation.
The signal is coupled out of the attenuator to PCIP1 through a protection resistor, PC1R1,
coupling capacitor, PC1C1, and onto the gate of PC1Ql. The signal is then coupled from the
source of PC 1Q1 and onto the base of PC 1Q2. PC 1R4, being common to both PC 1Q1 & PC 1Q2
reduces distortion. The signal is then coupled from the emitter of PC1Q2 thru coupling capacitor
PC1C4, thru the impedance matching resistor PC1R6 and to PC1jl.
From PC1j1, the signal is applied to the Low Pass Filter input section, PC3. This Filter has
a pass band of 20Hz to 200KHz. Its cutoff frequency is around 210KHz, with its ultimate
attenuation frequency set at 250KHz. PC4 is the output section of the Low Pass Filter. The
signal is coupled to PC1j2, thru PC1R12, an impedance matching resistor, and into the center
tap of PC1Tl.
Local Oscillator, PC2, is basically a FET oscillator made up of PC2Q1, PC2L1, C2 & a
bank of capacitors controlled by switch PC2S3. Initial alignment is on Band B, which establishes

4/71

3-4

DETAILED CIRCUIT THEORY (Continued)

the value of "L" in the ckt. This value of "L" remains the same for all three bands. On band B,
capacitors PC2CI, PC2C2, PC2C3 are switched in parallel with main tuning capacitor C2. 'This
combination of capacitors are in series with PC2LI & PC2L2. PC2Cl6 provides coupling to the
gate of PC2Q 1 while PC2R2 provides feedback to maintain oscillation. PC2C 1 adjusts the upper
end of Band B (350KHz), PC2L2 adjusts the low end of Band B, (260KHz). Band A switches
PC2(C6, C7, C8 & C9) in parallel with C2. It also switches the combination of PC2(C4 & C5)
in series with C2. PC2C6 sets the high end of Band A (260KHz) while PC2C4 adjusts the low
end, 250,020Hz,
Band C switches PC2(CI2, C13, C14) in parallel with C2. It also switches the combination
of PC2 (CIO & CII) in series with C2. PC2Cl2 sets the high end of Band C at 450KHz &
PC2C 10 adjusts the low end to 350KHz. This generated signal is coupled from the source of
PC2QI through PC2Cl8 to the gate of source follower PC2Q2. Capacitors PC2Cl8 and PC2Cl9
form a voltage divider which help keep the output of the Local Oscillator flat over its entire
frequency range. PC2Q2 is taken off of its source in two ways. One is coupled directly to the
base of PC2Q3, Emitter Follower. The other is from a voltage divider in the source of PC2Q2,
made up of PC2R5 & PC2R6. Emitter Follower PC2Q3 is utilized to provide isolation for the
Local Oscillator. The output is taken from a voltage divider, PC2(R7 & R8), in the emitter of
PC2Q3 and applied to PC2P3 for use in PC7.
The signal taken from PC2(R5 & R6) is coupled thru C20, a coupling capacitor and applied
to the base of amplifier PC2Q4. PC2Q4 drives the primary of PC2TI, while degenerative feed
back thru PC2(C22 & R 11) help to keep the output distortion free. The signal is then taken from
the secondary of PC2TI thru connectors PC2(P5 & P7) to PCI (P7 & P9).
The ring modulator, basically is made up of hot carrier diodes, PCI(D2, D3, D4, D5). Re
sistors PCI(RI4, R15, R17, R18) are 316 ohms, 1% precision resistors used in series with the hot
carrier diodes to improve their forward conduction characteristics, making the ring modulator
easier to balance, and improving its distortion characteristic. From PCI(P7 & P9) the Local Os
cilIa,tor injection signal is applied to the ring modulator at PCI(D3 & R15) and PCI(D5 & RI8).
When the Local Oscillator signal is positive at PCID5, diodes PCI(D4 & D5) are switched on,
allowing current to flow from PCIRl5 to PCID5. When the Local Oscillator signal is negative
atPCID5, Diodes PCI(D2 & D3) are switched on, allowing current to flow from PCIRl8 towards
PCID3. The rate, of course, that this switching occurs depends upon the local oscillator frequency.

4/71

3-5

DETAILED CIRCUIT THEORY (Continued)

The input signal that was earlier applied to the center tap of PC 1T1 is switched to ground as the
local oscillator alternately switches legs of the ring modulator on and off. The signal path that this
input signal takes is thru either PCIR13 or PCIRI6, thru the "on" ring modulator leg, thru one
half of PC2Tl and to ground at PCIP8. Current is now flowing in the primary of PC1Tl in rela
tion to both the input frequency and the local Oscillator frequency. Controls PCIC7 & PCIR13
are course balance controls to compensate for variations in the diodes. These controls relieve the
problem of matching diodes, both in production and field repair. Controls PCIR16 & PCIC8 are
fine balance controls to allow the operator to balance out the undesirable effects of the local os
cillator injection.
The output of the Ring Modulator is taken by the secondary of PClTl. Capacitor PCICI0
is a 200 pfd unit that tunes the secondary to 250KHz, the difference frequency of the input
signal and the Local Oscillator. This 250KHz is applied to the base of PCIQ4 and amplified.
From PCIQ4's collector it is coupled thru PCIC12 to the base of PCIQ5, Crystal Filter Driver.
Both PCl(Q4 ,& Q5) are low distortion amplifiers. The amplified signal is taken from the
collector of PCIQ5, thru PCIC13 and out of PCl via PCIPI0.
The 250KHz signal is coupled to PC5S4, selectivity switch, which serves two functions.
First, it allows the operator to select the crystal filter bandwidth desired, and it shorts the unused
filter to ground. Crystal Filters FLI & FL2 have center frequencies of 250KHz. FLI has a
bandwidth at 3db down of 25Hz, while FL2 has a 250Hz bandwidth at its 3db points. Capaci
tors, PC5C1 through PC5C8, are attached to the inputs and outputs of both filters and are used
to minimize ripple in the passband of the filters. Resistors PC5Rl & PC5R2 used in conjunction
with certain types of crystal filters, pads the output of FL2 down so that the same 250KHz sig
nalloss is present in it as in FLI. From PC5S4 the signal is coupled to PC6Pl.
From PC6Pl the 250KHz signal is coupled through PC6Rl, an impedance matching resistor
to pins 1 & 4 of the First I.F. Amplifier, PC6IC1. Here the 250KHz signal is amplified and
coupled from pin 6 of PC6ICI to the center tap of PC6Tl, the 1st I.F. transformer. PC6C4 and
the primary of PC6Tl are resonant at 250KHz. The signal is coupled between pins 1 and 4 of the
2nd I.F. amp PC6IC2 by PC6Tl's secondary. The amount of I.F. gain is varied by the Cal poten

0-

tiometer R3 which is in PC6IC2's emitter leg. The signal is amplified by PC6IC2 and is coupled
out pin 6 of PC6IC2 to the center tap of the primary of PC6T2. PC6T2's primary is tuned to
250KHz by PC6CI0. One of PC6T2's secondaries couples the signal between pins 1 & 4 of

4/71

3-6

PC6IC3, the third I.F. amplifier. After amplification the signal is taken out of pin 6 of PC6IC3
and coupled to the center tap of PC6T3's primary, which is tuned to 250KHz by capacitor
PC6CI5. Another output is taken from pin 6 of PC6IC3, thru coupling capacitor PC6CI6. This
signal will be used in the audio section of the voltmeter. Out of the secondary of PC6T3, the
250KHz signal is coupled to the meter detector circuit. Diodes PC6(DI & D2) rectify the 250KHz
signal, while capacitors PC6(CI7 & C18) filter the rectified current. Resistors PC6(R2 & R3) are
used to match the impedance of the meter, keeping it linear. This dc current is taken out PC6P3
and applied to a section of S5, the Power Switch. This section of S5 allows the operator to re
move this dc current and connect the meter to the battery test circuitry. From S5, the signal is
connected to the positive side of M1, a 100 ua meter.
In the audio section PC6Q5 and PC6Yl, a 249KHz crystal, basically make up a 249KHz
sideband oscillator, the emitter of PC6Q5 is bypassed with PC6(L4 & C26) which being tuned to
249KHz helps start PC6Q5 oscillating. The audio 249KHz signal is coupled out of its collector
through coupling capacitor PC6C27, into the base of PC6Q6, modulator driver. Modulator Driver
PC6Q6 drives the balanced modulator, PC6(D3 & D4) through coupling capacitors PC6(C28 &
C29). PC6Q6, by its phase shifting characteristic turns either PC6D3 or PC6D4 on.
The 250KHz IF signal that couples through PC6C16 is connected to PC6(D3 & D4), the
mixed signals are then coupled through PC6R21 and to PC6C30, which act as a low pass filter.
The output, a difference frequency of 1,000Hz, is coupled through coupling capacitor PC6C31,
through PC6P12 and out to the Audio poteniometer, R4. R4 allows the operator to adjust the
audio level out of the speaker in the voltmeter.
The 1KHz signal is taken from the arm of R4 and is coupled through PC6PI3, PC6C34 and
into the base of the 1st audio amplifier, PC6Q7. The signal is amplified and taken out the col
lector of PC6Q7. It is further amplified by PC6Q8 and coupled to the bases of PC6(Q9 & QI0),
which are push-pull amplifiers which drive another push-pull amplifier PC6(Qll & QI2).
The output is coupled through coupling capacitor PC6C37, to PC6PI4, to LSI speaker.
PC6T2 has a secondary winding for the purpose of furnishing a 250KHz signal to the counter
portion of the 4200. This signal is coupled to the gate of PC6Q4, a source follower, used to pro
vide isolation for the I.F. The signal is coupled to the base of PC6Q3, and after being amplified,
is taken out of the collector, through PC6C22, and out PC6PI0 to the counter mode switch, S6.
PC7Q 1 transistor and PC7Y 1 crystal and their associated circuitry, make up a 250KHz

oscillator. Capacitor PC7C5 allows the output frequency to be adjusted to 250KHz precisely. The
output is taken from the collector and is coupled through PC7C8 to the base of PC7Q2, Emitter
Follower.

This 250KHz signal is then taken from the emitter, through coupling capacitor

PC7C9, through PC7P3 to the counter Mode Switch S6.

Mode Switch S6 allows the operator to select the type of counter readout desired, which will
be the difference of the 250KHz crystal controlled frequency (Mode 1) or the 250KHz. I.F.
signal from PC6T2 (Mode 2) and the Local Oscillator frequency which is taken from PC2P3.
The output of S6 couples through PC7P8 to pin 3 of PC7IC1, Product Detector. The Local
Oscillator frequency from PC2P3 couples through PC7P9, through coupling capacitor PC7CI0
and into the product detector, PC7ICI on pin 7. The product detector, when both signals are
received, mixes the two and the output is coupled out pin 10. Resistors PC7RI0 through
PC7R13 assist in setting the amount that PC7ICI suppresses the carrier.
The output is coupled through PC7P5 to PC8Pl. PC8 is a low-pass filter, which has a band
pass of 20Hz to 200KHz, PC8 shares the same specifications with the L.P.F. made up of PC3 &
PC4. PC8 passes only the difference frequency that was mixed in the product detector and re
jects all others. The difference frequency is coupled out PC8P3 to PC7PI0, through PC7C13
and to the base of PC7Q3. Here the restored frequency is amplified and taken out of the collec
tor of PC7Q3. The signal is coupled through PC7C15 to the base of PC7Q4. Here the signal is
inverted and amplified to a level of approximately -12.5V and is coupled out PC7Q4's collector
to Pin 3 of PC7ICI6.
PC7Q5 and PC7Y2 basically make up a IMHz oscillator. Capacitor PC7C17 allows the
oscillator to be precisely tuned to IMHz. The IMHz output signal is taken out the emitter of
PC7Q5 and direct coupled to PC7Q6, an emitter follower.
PC7Q6 provides isolation for PC7Q5.

The IMHz signal is coupled out the emitter of

PC7Q6, through PC7C21 to pin 1 of PC7IC2, Pulse Shapero Resistor PC7R29, along with capaci
tor PC7C21 preshape the IMHz signal into a pulse. Resistor PC7R28 aids PC7IC2 by providing
feedback to shape the signal into a pulse, which is then fed out of pin 14 to pin 1 of PC7IC3.
PC7IC3, Decade Counter, divides the IMHz pulse by 10. This 100KHz pulse is coupled out pin
12 and direct coupled to PC7IC4, pin 1. PC7IC4, is another decade counter which divides the
100KHz pulse down to 10KHz. This 10KHz pulse is direct coupled from pin 12 to pin 1 of
PC7IC5. PC7IC5 decade counter divides this down to 1KHz. This 1KHz pulse out of pin 12 is

4/71

3-8

DETAILED CIRCUIT THEORY (Continued)

used in two ways, one way, it is coupled out PC7P6 to PC1P4. From PC1P4 it couples through
PC1C5 and into the base of PC1Q3. PC1Q3 Emitter Follower provides isolation for the count
down chain. Its output is taken through PC1R8 and potentiometer PC1R9 in PC1Q3's emitter.
PC1R9 allows an adjustment in level of the 1KHz pulse. This set level is taken out through
PC1P3 to the input switch 81. When 81 is placed in the Cal position this 1KHz signal is coupled
into the attenuator AT1, for use in the 4200 to set its total gain.
PC7IC6 pin 1 receives the other output from PC7IC5. This 1KHz signal is counted down to
100Hz. It is coupled out Pin 12 to pin 1 of PC7IC7. Again the signal is divided by 10 and its
10Hz output on pin 12 is coupled to PC7IC8. PC7IC8 divides the 10Hz pulses to 1Hz. It is
coupled out of pin 12 and is fed to pin 13 of IC9, Hex Inverter. Here in one section of the Hex
Inverter the signal is inverted and taken out pin 2, direct coupled to pin 2 of PC7IC10, a dual J.K.
Flip-Flop. PC7IC10 converts the 1Hz signal into a one second gate. It supplies this one second
gate at pins 13 and 14, at opposite polaritys. The gate from pin 14 is used to make up the clock
pulse, and is direct coupled to the base of the PC7Q7, an emitter follower, which provides iso
lation and couples the gate to the base of PC7Q10. PC7Q10 amplifies the 1 second gate to a level
of approximately -12.5V and it is taken from the collector and applied to pin 2 of PC7IC16, to
be utilized as the clock pulse.
The other 1 second gate that is originated in PC7IC10 which is taken out of pin 13 is direct
coupled back to another section of the Hex Inverter, PC7IC9. In on pin 10 and after being in
verted it is coupled out on pin 5 to two places. One is through PC7C23 and into the base of PC7
Q8. Capacitor PC7C23 and Resistor PC7R34 make up a differentiating ckt to provide a differ
entiated waveshape.
As the positive going pulse of this waveform is applied to the base of transistor, PC7Q8, it
drives it into conduction. As a result, a sharp negative going pulse of approximately -12.5V is
present on its collector. This is fed to pins 13 of PC7IC11 through IC16, as the storage pulse.
This storage pulse is timed in conjunction with the negative going side of the clock pulse.
Pin 5 also feeds back into pin 14 of the hex inverter. After being inverted it is coupled out
pin 1 through capacitor PC7C24 and into the base of PC7Q9. Here PC7C24 and PC7R36 make
up a differentiating network. Again as in the storage ckt, the positive going pulse is used to turn
PC7Q9 on. This negative going trigger, around -12.5V, is coupled out the collector to pin 4 of
PC7IC11 through IC16 and is used as the Reset trigger.

4/71

3-9

DETAILED CIRCUIT THEORY (Continued)

This reset trigger is timed in conjunction with the positive going side of the clock pulse.
When the clock pulse, reset trigger, storage pulse, and an input pulse are present to PC 71CII
through ICI6, these integrated circuit decoder-drivers decode the information and drive their
respective seven-segment readout tubes, PC7VI through V6. The tube segments are illuminated
when the following conditions exist. When 1.6V is across the filaments, pins 6 & 9. When a -27V
is references to one side of the filaments, on pin 6 of the tube and when the driver switches
ground to a segment, on pin I, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, or 8.
Battery BI is a rechargeable 4.8V, 7 AHR nicad unit. Its voltage is brought in through a red
lead into PC9PI, through PC9F2, a 2 amp, so-blo-fuse, used to protect BI and wiring. From
PC9F2 4.8V dc is taken out of PC9P5 and applied to a section of power switch S5.
When 115VAC is connected into the 4200, jl furnishes 115VAC to the primary of Tl.
Power transformer TI, is a step down transformer whose secondary supplies 7.5VAC to PC9P3
and PC9P4. This 7.5VAC is coupled through PC9FI, a 3 amp slo-blo fuse, and is applied to a full
wave bridge rectifier, PC9BRl.

Here 7.5VAC is converted to a d.c. voltage and filtered by

PC9Cl. PC9RI and PC9ZIlimit this voltage to 5.6VDC, which is coupled out through PC9P6
and into S5, the Power Switch, for use as a charging vOltage for BI.
If the Power switch, S5, is setting in any position besides HOFF" or HAC", 4.8VDC is

coupled from it through PC9P7 to the center tap of PC9T I 's primary, and biasing resistor PC9R3.
This voltage causes either PC9QI or PC9Q2 to conduct, rapidly building flux lines in the primary
of PC9Tl. PC9TI has core material that is easily saturated and when saturation takes place, the
feedback winding of PC9T I, causes the conducting transistor to be switched off. The resulting
collapsing field switches the other transistor on.
The frequency of oscillation is controlled somewhat by resistor PC9R3.
Capacitor, PC9C2, is used to keep the spikes from the Inverter from coupling back into the
battery or to other circuits.
The oscillating of PC9(QI, Q2) and the primary of PC9TI, causes an AC voltage to be
coupled into the secondaries of PC9TI, one of which is coupled out PC9(PI3 & P14) to PC6
(P7 & P8).
After being coupled into PC6BRI, it is rectified and then filtered by PC6CI9.
PC6(QI & Q2) provides regulation while PC6ZIlimits the dc level to 9.6VDC. This voltage
is used throughout the 4200.

4/71

3-10

L
DETAILED CIRCUIT THEORY (Continued)

Another AC voltage is coupled out PC9Tl's secondary, rectified by PC9Dl, filtered by

PC9C5 and coupled out PC9Pli to a section of 85. When 85 is placed in AC or Bat 1 this -27VDC
is coupled to PC7PI2.
A third vOltage is coupled out PC9Tl's secondary, rectified by PC9D2, and filtered by
PC9C3.
Regulator, PC9Q3, regulates this voltage and PC9Z3 limits its output to a -13VDC. This is
coupled out PC9P12 to a section of 85. When 85 is placed in AC or Bat 1, this -13VDC is
coupled to PC7Pll.
A fourth secondary winding on PC9Tl furnishes AC voltage to PC9D3, which rectifies it to
dc. Capacitor, PC9C4, filters this -+9.6VDC. The positive of this -+9.6V is referenced to the -27V
by a connection on PC9. The negative side of the .9.6V is coupled out through PC9P15 to
PC7PI3. This voltage is used in 85's AC Qr Bat 1 positions for the filament potential of PC7Vl
through V6.

SECTION IV
L
TROUBLE SHOOTING

GENERAL

In case of difficulty with the 4200, the following suggestions may be helpful.
1. Check the battery condition, make sure it reads HO"db or above on the meter, when the

power selector is switched to the Bat. Test Position.

2. Check the 4200's control settings. If you are making measurements, check to make sure
that the Input Selector is not on HCal." or that the attenuator setting is not too high. Check to
make sure the proper Frequency Selector button is pushed HIn". If the 25Hz Selectivity position
is used, turn the Audio Control up and rotate the tuning knob slowly, so that a signal will not be
unknowingly bypassed.
3. If the Power Selector is set on the AC position, make sure that 115VAC is connected to
it.
4. If no solution has been found as to why a problem exists, try calibrating the 4200. This
will give it a system check that will quickly tell if a problem exists within it.
5. If the unit will not calibrate properly, determine what section or sections of the volt
meter are causing the problem. The problem in most cases, should fall under one or more of the
following catagories.
a. Unit totally inoperative in all power selector settings.
b. Unit inoperative in AC power selector setting.
c. Unit will not calibrate, counter tubes illuminate, mayor may not display in Mode I.
d. Unit calibrates, shows correct level and frequency measurements, but has no audio indi
cation.
e. Unit will not read out frequency in one setting or another of counter Mode Switch, all
other indications ok.
The following is probably the most common cause of the problems, a through e.
To isolate the defective component and to repair it will of course necessitate removing the
unit from its case. Do this by placing the 4200 face down on a soft cloth and remove the two

4/71

4-1

TROUBLE SHOOTING (Continued)

screws from the back of the case.

Lift the case from the unit.

If the problem resembles a or b, remove the power supply cover and check fuses PC9F 1 or

PC9F2.
The remaining problems are more difficult to isolate and it will be very helpful to use the
following in locating problems, the Schematic, the component placement photographs, and the
dc. voltage measurements.
Now, breaking problem c down further, if the unit will count in Mode I, this tells us that the
Local Oscillator PC2, is functioning the counter is developing the Cal signal, and that the power
supply, PC9, is supplying the proper dc voltages out.
This leaves the possible cause in the following areas: input board, PCl or I.F. board, PC6.
If the unit would not count in Mode I in problem c, then we would also have to look at

PC9, the power supply board, PC7, the counter board, and PC2 the Local Oscillator board.
Problem d would most likely involve PC6, the I.F. board.
Problem e would likely be caused in PC7, the counter board, or possibly in PC6, the I.F.
board.
