1) Introduction :
In this chapter, it is required to plan the distribution
system of a quarter of the residential area. The plan of this
area is given in the drawing of fig. (7.1) . It includes 176
buildings of housings of flat type (B) , 138 buildings of
housings 0f flat type (D) and 440 villas of type (B) . The
population is 22 thousands. The population will be distributed
in the given area by the following ratios :
a)

For flat type (B) :

This type will be including 40% of the number of population.
i.e. 8800 person .
Assuming that the average no. of population per flat are 5

The no. of flats type (B) will be 1760 flat.

Assuming that the buildings consists of 5 floors with 2 flats per
floor

The no. of buildings of flats type (B) will be 176 flat.

b)

For flat type (D) :

This type will be including 50% of the number of population.
i.e. 11000 person .
Assuming that the average no. of population per flat are 4

The no. of flats type (D) will be 2750 flat.

Assuming that the buildings consist of 5 floors with 4 flats per
floor

The no. of buildings of flats type (D) will be 138 building

c)

For villa type (B) :

This type will be including 10% of the number of population.
i.e. 2200 person .
Assuming that the average no. of population per villa are 5

The no. of villas type (B) will be 440 villa

The area contains also several service buildings such as
. schools, hospitals and mosques as well as gardens

(4.2) Planning Procedure :

The planning of this area starts from inside the individual
,flats of the buildings . The various types of loads ; lighting
normal sockets and power sockets are estimated according to
standard forms. The feeding circuits are defined and the
wiring cross sections are calculated. The ratings of the
miniature circuit breakers and main circuit breaker of the flat
40

. as well as the energy meter are selected

The load of the flats being defined, the

diversified
estimation of the total load of the building is defined.
The
buildings are fed from distribution boxes and cables
of
suitable sizes, forming a part of the low voltage
distribution
network. The distribution boxes are fed from 11/0.4
kV
distribution transformers , preferably in loops , to
secure the
continuity of supply to the distribution boxes and
hence to the
buildings .
The distribution transformers are located in the
appropriate sites and connected in loops to the 11 kV
distribution points and the 66/11 kV substation .
Detailed calculations and planning of the 380 V low
voltage distribution network, the 11 kV medium voltage
networks as well as details of the 66/11 kV substation feeding
,the area, are presented in the following chapters. Before this
the principles of lighting and wiring are summarized in the
41

. following sections
