Interpretation: The majority of the residents of Salian receive their information
from watching television. A percentage of 17% listen to the radio to get their news,
while only 1% choose to read the newspaper. Some of the residents get their
information from talking with the neighbors.

Analysis. Television is widely accessible and more entertaining than listening to the
radio or reading a newspaper because you can simultaneously watch and listen. The
television is the cornerstone of entertainment in a majority of the households.
Purchasing a newspaper everyday can become costly, while watching television is
free and convenient.

Interpretation: The majority of the residents of barangay Salian obtain an average
monthly income of below P2,999. That is about P100 a day. 32% make between
P3,000-P4,000, an average of P167 a day. While 19% make between P5,000-P9,000,
2% make P10,000-P14,000 and 2% obtain P10,000-P14,000 a month.

Analysis: On average, a large sum of the residents of Salian live off of P100 a day.
Most of the residents make very little money in order to survive. An unskilled
laborer with no experience or education could make about P300 a day. This shows
that the residents lack work that is sufficient to cover their basic needs.

Interpretation: 93% of the residents of Salian own appliances. Only 7% do not have
appliances in their home.

Analysis: This shows that although a majority of the residents on Salian have little
means, they find that owning appliances is important and have made efforts to
obtain them. Appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines are known to
make life easier, while owning a television can make life enjoyable. The use of
appliances can help and provide more time for other activities. It allows ones energy
to be spent elsewhere.

Interpretation: Most of the residents of Salian choose to self medicate, spending


between P0-499 pesos a year on medical expenses. 7% have chosen to be outpatients and have spent anywhere between P500-4999 on their health. Only 3%
have been inpatients and spent P500 or more on medical expenses.

Analysis: A majority of the residents of Salian choose not to spend their money on
medical expenses. They rely on self medicating and using natural remedies such as
herbs. This is cost effective for them since hospitals are known to cost a great deal of
money.
