INITIAL ADJUSTMENTS
2.4.1 PRIMARY POWER. Attach the line cord connector to recessed male input connector P101 on the
rear chassis. Check the primary power selector on
the rear of the Lmit to ensure that proper a-c operating voltages are applied to the power transformer.
2.4.2 ADJUSTMENTS. Follow the procedure outlined in paragraph 3.3, CALIBRATION, of Section
III, OPERATION, for the initial adjustments and
calibration of the unit. If these procedures
indicate equipment malfunction, follow the maintenance procedures outlined in paragraph 5.4,
Section V.

VTVM MEASUREMENTS
(WIDEBAND)
NOTE
Compare the output impedance of the
circuit under test with the value indicated
by INPUT IMPEDANCE switch S101. The
two values should be the same. For very
low level measurements, the input leads
should be kept as short as possible. Check
all ground connections carefully.

SELECTIVE VOLTMETER
MEASUREMENTS
The 476J-1 measures harmonic distortion, intermodulation products, crosstalk, attenuation, and modulation characteristics when used in the selective
voltmeter application. The following paragraphs
describe these measurements. Calibrate the meter
as instructed in paragraph 3.3 and perform the
measurements in paragraph 3.4.1, a to e, before
attempting selective voltmeter measurements. The
latter ensures that input levels will not overload the
instrument. The instrument has a very narrow bandpass of approximately 200 kc. When making measurements in the SEL VM position, rotate the tuning
dial slowly to ensure measurement of all signals.
Adjust SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE switch
S104 to the -60 db range to measure very low level
. signals. Possible errors in measurement can occur
when other spurious frequencies in the vicinity of
1604 to 2350 kc are present. This situation can occur
when image signals differ in level by less than 30 db.
A low-pass filter can be used at the input terminals
to attenuate the spurious frequencies.

Maintenance
The instrument now provides equal gain in the VTVM
or SEL VM positions.
5.3.3 50 KC OSCILLATOR LEVEL-CALIBRATION.
When calibrated in the following manner the 50 kc
oscillator can be used for an internal calibration
reference signal.
a. Turn switches INPUT, S102, the function selector, S105, and the SELECTIVE VOLTMETER
RANGE, S104, to the CAL 2 position.
b. Adjust the dial for maximum meter deflection
at 50 kc.
c. Adjust CAL 1, R180, for a 0 db meter
indication.
The 50 kc oscillator is now adjusted to the correct
level.
5.3.4 OUTPUT AND METER ALIGNMENT
a. Switch the function selector S105 to the
CAL 1 position.
b. Adjust rheostat R184 for a 0 db meter
indication.
The last three stages of amplification, VI07 and
VI08, and the meter are now properly calibrated
to correspond to the 50 kc oscillator calibration.
5.3.5 NORMAL CALIBRATION. After completing
the steps of alignment in the preceeding paragraphs,
and prior to using the 476J-l for test purposes,
again perform the steps of calibration outlined in
paragraph 3.3.
5.4 TROUBLESHOOTING
Under conditions of normal operation the 476J-l will
not require more than the routine maintenance
g. Perform d-c voltage and resistance measurements to locate the circuit which is not functioning. Resistance voltage, and level values are
shown in figure 5-2.
