Section I
General Description

SECTION I
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
1.1

GENERAL

Selective and Wideband Voltmeter 476J-l is a highly

sensitive, selective test instrument which measures
the voltage level of each frequency component of
complex wave forms in the 4- to 750-kc range. As a
selective voltmeter, it is used either in the laboratory
or in the field for several types of measurements:
(1) harmonic distortion, (2) intermodulation products,
(3) crosstalk, (4) attenuation, and (5) modulation
characteristics tests, relative to electrical filters,
cables, or open-wire lines. The frequencies of a
complex wave form are also indicated. As a wideband electronic voltmeter the 4 76J -1 measures the
rms voltage level of a single or composite signal or
noise in the 200-cps to 750-kc range.

1.2

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION

The 476J-l consists of four major circuits: (1) an

r-f amplifier with an input matching network and a
low pass filter, (2) an 800-kc i-f circuit, (3) a 15-kc
i-f circuit, and (4) a metered output circuit. See
figure 1-3.
The 476J-1 is a single unit which can be either rackmounted on standard 19-inch racks or used on a
bench. It is fitted with removable safety covers and
two carrying handles. A reinforced wooden carrying
case is available for transporting the unit. See
figure 1-2.

Standard construction techniques are used on internal

wiring with small parts accessible on composition
terminal boards. Critical circuits are enclosed in
metal containers which have removable covers.
Tubes are held in place by spring loaded holders.
The tuning condensor is ruggedized, vernier-driven,
and directly calibrated with the tuning dial. The dial
is illuminated with two 6. 3-volt a-c pilot lamps.

beat is heard in the headset.

This operation fixes the input resistance

of the unit at 5,000 ohms (non-inductive)
and prOVides a means of calibrating meter
M101 to accurately measure voltage ratios
of different input levels.

e. Reset the dial to the test frequency and set

function selector switch S105 to the SEL VM position.

3.4

VTVM MEASUREMENTS
(WIDEBAND)

The 476J-1 measures single or composite signal

rms voltage levels or voltage ratios (in db) over the
200-cps to 750-kc spectrum when switch S105 is set
in the VTVM position. The measurements can be
made on either balanced or unbalanced two-conductor
circuits.

NOTE
Compare the output impedance of the
circuit under test with the value indicated
by INPUT IMPEDANCE switch S101. The
two values should be the same. For very
low level measurements, the input leads
should be kept as short as possible. Check
all ground connections carefully.
4

Calibrate the meter as instructed in paragraph

b. Apply the signal which has the highest level

of the signals being tested to terminals E101 and
E102.
c. Set INPUT switch S102 to the 0 db position and
turn ADJ INPUT control R109 for a meter M101 indication of 0 db (0.775 v).
d. Remove the reference voltage (step b) and
indiVidually measure the remaining levels on the
test circuit. INPUT switch S102 can be adjusted to
maintain on-scale meter readings as necessary.
To compute the level indicated by the instrument:
a.

Record the meter indication in db.

b. Note the position of INPUT switch S102

and SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE switch
S104.
Revised: 15 October 1960

Section III
Operation

c. Add the meter indication and the two switch

indications algebraically to arrive at the total level
in db: i. e. value in db = -4(meter)-20(S102)
-10(SI04) = -:34 db.

c. Connect the output terminals of the network

under test to input terminals E101 and E102 on the
476J-1 and tune MAIN TUNING control C131 to the
fundamental frequency.

3.5

d. Set INPUT switch S102 to the +20 db position

and SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE switch S104
to the 0 db position.

SELECTIVE VOLTMETER
MEASUREMENTS

The 476J-1 measures harmonic distortion, intermodulation products, crosstalk, attenuation, and modulation characteristics when used in the selective
voltmeter application. The following paragraphs
describe these measurements. Calibrate the meter
as instructed in paragraph 3.3 and perform the
measurements in paragraph 3.4.1, a to e, before
attempting selective voltmeter measurements. The
latter ensures that input levels will not overload the
instrument. The instrument has a very narrow bandpass of approximately 200 kc. When making measurements in the SEL VM position, rotate the tuning
dial slowly to ensure measurement of all signals.
Adjust SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE switch
S104 to the -60 db range to measure very low level
. signals. Possible errors in measurement can occur
when other spurious frequencies in the vicinity of
1604 to 2350 kc are present. This situation can occur
when image signals differ in level by less than 30 db.
A low-pass filter can be used at the input terminals
to attenuate the spurious frequencies.

e. Increase the signal generator output for a full

scale deflection. Record the level.
f. Tune the voltmeter to the second, third,
fourth, ... n harmonics, and record the level of each.

The total harmonic distortion is obtained from the

following formula:

limited on the upper limits by the 476J-l internal
noise voltage, which is approximately 1 microvolt.

3.5.2 I;";TERMODULATIOl:" MEASUREME:t\;TS. Perform intermodulation measurements in the same way

as outlined above for harmonic distortion measurements.
a.

Connect the equipment as shown in figure 3-2.

b. Connect the two signal generators shown in

the illustration so the intermodulation products will
differ by at least 500 cycles. The voltmeter can
then differentiate between the intermodulation products.

d. Record the level of each measurable frequency

component as indicated by meter MI0l. Intelligible
near-end cross-talk attenuation measurements up to
130 db can be measured.

d. Scan the frequency band carefully and record

the level of each obs erved signal.

The instrument can also be used as a very sensitive

null indicator in a bridge type crosstalk meter. No
additional balancing filters are necessary.

e. Compare the ratio of the intermodulation product levels to the test tone levels. System specifications determine the degree of permissible intermodulation distortion.

The 476J-l can be used in an actual carrier circuit

for analyzing crosstalk on specific channels. Measurements can be made with the meter for purposes of
pinpointing the disturbing frequencies. Headphones
can be used for audible interpretations of the crosstalk.

Section IV
Principles of Operation

SECTION IV
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
4.1

GENERAL

This section consists of a circuit analysis of the

voltmeter by stages, paralleling the block diagram
of 4-1 and the schematic diagram, figure 5-2.

The 476J-1 consists of four major circuits:

a. An r-f amplifier with an input matching network
and a low pass filter.
b. An 800 kc i -f circuit, consisting of an 804 to
1550 kc vfo, a ring modulator, an 800 kc band pass
filter, a stage of resistance-coupled amplification,
and another 800 kc band pass filter.
c. A 15 kc i -f circuit consisting of a 785 kc
crystal-controlled oscillator, a ring modulator,
a 15 kc band pass filter, a variable attenuator,
two stages of resistance-coupled amplification,
and a cathode follower.
d. A metered output circuit, consisting of
another 15 kc band pass filter, three stages of
resistance-coupled amplification with feedback, and
a metered output. Refer to figure 5-2 for circuit
identification.
e. A 50 kc crystal-controlled calibration
oscillator.

4.2

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

4.2.1 INPUT AND AMPLIFICATION. The 476J-1

input is either balanced or unbalanced, dependent
on the position of the INPUT IMPEDANCE switch
S101. Center INPUT terminal E102 is at ground
potential in the UNBALANCED position. Terminal
E103 is at chassis ground potential and can
be used for a test equipment common
ground.
The signal is coupled through capacitor C101
or transformer T101, INPUT IMPEDANCE switch
S101B and S10le to the INPUT attenuator switch,
S102. Through a series of switched resistances,
R110 through R115, input levels of up to +40 db
can be measured without overloading the voltmeter. ADJ INPUT potentiometer R109 is a
Revised: 15 October 1960

non-inductive variable resistance which further

varies the input leveL The signal is coupled
directly to tube VIOl, a dual-triode untuned
resistance-coupled amplifier, and from there to
the center tap of function selector switch S105B.
The 476J-1 functions as a vtvm when S105 is in
position 3, and as a selective voltmeter in
positions 1, 2, and 5. The CAL 1 position is a
no-signal position. Filter FL101 is a low pass
filter which presents a high impedance to signals
above 750 kc and a low impedance to lower
frequencies. The signal is applied from the output
of FL10l to the primary windings of ring modulator transformer T102.
4.2.2 800 KC I-F CIRCUIT WITH FILTERING.
The ring modulator consists of transformers T102
and T103, diodes CR101 through CR104, and
potentiometers R127 and R128. The vfo consists
of tube V102, MAIN TUNING capacitor C131, and
a series of switched LC circuits; inductors L102
through L107 and trimmer capacitors C133, C135,
C137, C139, C141, and C143, all switched by
FREQ RANGE switch S103. Trimmer capacitor
C132 permits accurate calibration of the dial
frequency with respect to the input signal
frequency.
The 800-kc intermediate frequency signal is
coupled from the output of ring modulator transformer T103 to the input terminals of 800-kc band
pass filter FL102. It is then applied from the
output of filter FL102 to the grid of tube V103 and
further amplified. The output from V103 is applied
to another 800 kc bandpass filter and to the second
ring modulator. The 800 kc filters pass only a 200
cps bandwidth.
4.2.3 15 KC I-F CIRCUIT WITH FILTERING.
The 800 kc signal mixes with a 785 kc .signal
from the crystal-controlled oscillator, tube V104,
at the second ring modulator. The 15 kc difference frequency is applied to switched series
attenuator, SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE
switch S104 and resistors R136 through R14L
The signal is then applied to resistance-coupled
amplifiers V105 and V107A, cathode follower
V107B, and to the input of the 15 kc band pass
filter FL105.
9

Section IV - V
Principles of Operation - Maintenance

4.2.4 OUTPUT CIRCUIT. The 15 kc signal is applied from the output of FLl05 to terminals 2 and 5
of function selector switch Sl05B and to the grid of
tube VIOS. The three resistance-coupled amplifiers,

VIOS and VIO 9 further amplify the signal which is

then applied to output meter MlOl or phones through
detector diodes CRllO and CRlll and switch Sl05A.

SECTION V

HOOK-UP WIRE CODE

The characteristics of the hook-up wire used in this equipment are indicated by groups of symbols on the
diagrams. Each symbol group consists of a maximum of three letters followed by a maximum of three
numerals. When three letters are used the first indicates the type of wire, the second represents the size
of wire, and the third is the letter' 'S", used only when the wire is shielded. When two letters are used, the
first and second letters indicate either the type and size of wire or the size of wire and shielding, respectively.
When one letter is used it indicates the wire size only. The first numeral indicates the color of the wire body
and the second and third numeral s, if any, represent the colors of tracers, all numerals being in accordance
with the standard EIA and MIL-W-16878 color code.
The symbols are assigned according to the following table.
