1. CHOOSE A RESEARCH TOPIC. THE TOPIC CAN BE ANY TOPIC/ISSUE YOU ANTICIPATE
WRITING ABOUT IN YOUR ESSAY FOR ASSIGNMENT 4 OR ANY TOPIC/ISSUE DISCUSSED IN
MODULE 3 LECTURES OR ASSIGNED READINGS.

Identify the broad subject that you are researching in the space below. (Example:
Racism, Debt, Development, Miners experiences, Mineral resource extraction,
Migrant Labour, Ecotourism, Histories of colonialism, Market transactions, etc.)

Globalization and Agriculture

2. MOVE FROM A BROAD TOPIC TO A NARROW TOPIC:

Look at your broad topic from several different angles.

Survey what you already know or get background information

o

Examples: 1) Broad topic: Racism. Narrow topic: How does racism persist in
Canadian high schools despite anti-racist education?
2) Broad topic: Mineral resource extraction. Narrow topic: Do African
countries with rich oil deposits benefit from resource extraction? If so,
how? If not, why not?

Use the space below to write a short sentence or two about how you will
narrow the focus of the broad subject you identified above. (Tip: how
questions work well):

How has the agricultural demand of

Western consumers and the relatively new concepts of

globalization and neoliberalism affected the conditions
under which indigenous and migrant labourers work?

3. TRANSLATE THE SENTENCE ABOVE INTO TWO OR THREE KEY WORDS

1996 Labour Organisation in Western Cape Agriculture: An Ethnic Corpatism? The
Journal of Peasant Studies 23(2-3):146-165

This article explores the modernization of the agricultural farming business

after a resolution that was put forward in 1973 at the South African Agricultural Union
congress, which called for farmers to be treated better, fed properly, and
compensated adequately, without exception. This article pertains to the question of
changing conditions in agricultural workers lives after the initialization of
globalization and neoliberalism. The article outlines the fact that efforts were made

to hire long term workers so that there would not be a need to constantly turn over
and train incoming workers. The approach of this article, in relation to the changing
labour conditions, is to exhibit the necessary demand for skilled workers. Competition
is growing, which in turn leads to companies trying to do the most possible to achieve
the best product. This article investigates the newly (at the time) adapted methods of
management in the field. The approach changed from an autocratic rule, where one
person was the boss, and transformed in to a more structured and branched
managerial style. This created greater opportunities for some people, but at the same
time created less opportunities for others because workers were so well organized
and productive, which created less of a demand for labourers. Most importantly, this
article outlines and exhibits the reasons for poor conditions within the agricultural
sector. This article brings anthropological concepts to demonstrate the problems of
the wages, living, and working conditions of African migrant workers who are trying to
create and produce the best product to be exported to Western countries.

Annotated Bibliography #2 (Journal article found through search of JSTOR database)

Reference citation:
Collins, Jane L.
1995 Transnational Labor Process and Gender Relations: Women in Fruit and
Vegetable Production in Chile, Brazil, and Mexico. The Journal of Latin American and
Caribbean Anthropology 1(1):178-199

This article pertains directly to the concept that American or Western people
have become extremely demanding in their consumption of agriculture. This lead to
Page 7 of 9

the restructuring of farming methods which created more efficient production. This
globalization of agriculture has heightened the demand for farmers to increase their
output. This article exhibits the cost-cutting exercises of corporate farmers. These
exercises include paying the labourers less than they already make, which is done in
many ways, one of them is to hire women because it is socio-culturally acceptable in
third world countries to pay women lower wages than men. This has become a major
way that agriculture businesses save money. This article stresses the importance of
efficiency, noting that every step of the process, from picking the fruit to putting it
on shelves, is imperative that it is done in the best way with the least amount of
money. The competition of companies is fierce and any way of lowering the cost of
production is utilized. This article portrays the agriculture business as a true capitalist
approach. They do not care about anything other than money and profit. The article
makes reference to three studies in Chile, Brazil, and Mexico to support its points.

Annotated Bibliography #3 (Chapter in an academic book found through search of

Library Catalogue)
Reference citation:
Aguiar, Tomic, Ricardo Trumper
2011 Mexican Migrant Agricultural Workers and Accommodations on Farms in the
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia In Metropolis British Columbia. pp. 5-33 Metropolis
British Columbia

This resource focuses on the Canadian side of the border, more specifically in
the Okanagan Valley, B.C. This resource is especially unique to the concepts of

neoliberalism and globalization because it explores the migrant workers who are on
our side of the hemisphere, rather than in third world countries. This resource
conveys the information about Canadian legislation and law which are put into place
to prevent migrant workers from being taken advantage of. The paper discusses the
unfortunate situation that these migrant workers are put into. There is not enough
government supervision of these companies to ensure that the law is followed and
that legislation is not forgotten. The paper also argues that Canada is negatively
involved and responsible for the worsening conditions under which migrant labourers
work. The chapter argues that this new neoliberal approach to agriculture is weeding
out the weak and only the top businesses are succeeding. The paper offers advantages
towards outsourcing work to Mexicans, including more structured labour. This paper is
relevant to the big question of proper treatment of labourers in a neoliberalism era.
The paper exhibits suggestions in which the image of labour workers and their working
conditions could be changed. The demand from Western countries for agriculture has
created a detrimental situation for labourers who are in need of any job they could
find.
