STATISTICAL METHODS, 2015

Second Year, Chemical Engineering Department

Problem Sheet 2
1. Determine the critical t value (s) to be used for the following tests:
a) n = 13, left-tailed test, = 0.05.
b) n = 21, two-tailed test, = 0.01.
c) n = 9, right- tailed test, = 0.05.
2. How does a p- value procedure differ from the classical hypothesis testing procedure?
3. In an experiment where different formulations were used in a drug delivery device, a sample
was taken from one formulation on the first total drug reading (milligrams):
603 534 542 591 610 489 516 570 596 654
The desired result was for the mean of this amount to exceed 450 mg. using a level of
significance of 0.05, test to see if the formulation appears to be delivering the desired mean.
4. A calculator battery has a population mean life of 80 hours. A random sample of 21
calculators are tested, and it was found that the variance in battery life span was
4.1.Assuming the battery life is normally distributed, at the 0.05 level, test the hypothesis
that the population variance is less than 9.
5. A light bulb manufactures claims her bulb have a population mean life of 1000 hours. Is this
claim justified at the 0.05 level if a random sample of 25 bulbs has a sample mean of 994
hours with a standard deviation of 30 hours? Assume the population life expectancy of the
bulbs is normally distributed.
6. Which test distribution is used for a test of the population mean when a large sample is
available? When a small sample is used?
7. Use a two-tailed test and test the quality of population variances at the 0.05 level of
significance given the following data: For sample A, n= 16, s2 =457.21 and x = 247.16. And
for sample B, n= 7, s2 = 99.08, and x = 247.27.
8. Design a decision rule to test the hypothesis that a coin is fair if we take a sample of 64
tosses of the coin and use significance level of 0.05. How could you avoid a type II error?
9. A random sample of 10 patients is treated with the cream on one arm and with a placebo on
the other arm (control arm). After 4 days; a measure of muscle soreness is then taken for
each patient on each arm. The results are

Using a paired t procedure, test the hypothesis at the 0.01 level that there is less soreness in
the treated arm (Data = soreness).

10. A career counselor claims that there is no difference in career decision-making skills among
various groups. A test to determine career decision-making skills is given to random samples
of people belonging to three ethnic groups. The results of this test are shown below.
Test the counselors claim at the 0.01.

be rejected. Give the rationale behind this statement.
