Each May, LMB and our partners host the Lucinda Means
Bicycle Advocacy Day at the State Capitol. We advocate for legislative
policies that advance bicycling and defend against attacks on the
rights of bicyclists in Michigan. Join us May 25, 2016.

LMBs Mission:

To promote bicycling and the safety of

bicyclists on Michigan roadways.

LMB continues to be your voice

for safe bicycling in Michigan.
Your generous donation will allow LMB to
continue to advance the following priorities:

Adopt bicycle-friendly legislation

LMB has a proven record
of creating policy change
that supports our mission
of promoting bicycling
and safety of bicyclists
on Michigan roadways.
Through your support,
LMB has led the charge
on key campaigns to
advance bicycling. These
include enacting a statewide Complete Streets law
resulting in the construction of more bicycling facilities, the adoption of the Nathan Bower Act (requiring
drivers education to focus on bicycle awareness) and
successfully petitioning Amtrak to allow bikes on trains.
Building on these victories, LMB is now advancing
safe passing legislation. A bill requiring drivers to give
bicyclists five feet of space when passing is now before
the House. Michigan is just one of a handful of states
with no law directing motorists to pass bicyclists safely.
LMB is advancing legislation to establish protections
for vulnerable roadway users by creating enhanced
penalties for drivers who injure or kill bicyclists,
pedestrians and wheelchair users. In the past 10 years,
nearly 20,000 cyclists were involved in motor vehicle
crashes in Michigan. Your support will allow LMB to
advocate for these important legislative safeguards.
We are also working to define e-bikes in Michigan.
Currently, our vehicle code classifies electric assist
bicycles as mopeds. This means that e-bikes are
technically prohibited from trails and bike lanes.
This misclassification has created further confusion
among law enforcement over license and registration

requirements. Your contributions will help LMB clarify this

emerging issue for e-bike users, manufacturers, retailers
and law enforcement.
LMB continues to voice support for a solution to our
states transportation funding needs. We stand strong that
a solution must be sustainable, equitable and preserve
dedicated non-motorized funding to support Complete
Streets implementation.

Defend the rights of bicyclists

Your support has helped LMB defeat past legislative
attempts to expand governmental immunity. Such efforts
undermine the rights of bicyclists to make liability claims
against road agencies for injuries caused by roadway
defects. In 2015, LMB took our concerns all the way to
the Supreme Court. We filed an Amicus Brief on behalf of
Michigan bicyclistsregarding a case that could expand
government immunity even further.
LMB is also working with coalition partners to educate
policy makers on the dangers increased speeds pose to cyclists. Ongoing legislative efforts endanger non-motorized
users, who already represent a disproportionately high
number of injuries and deaths in Michigan. Your support
will allow LMB to continue to demand that the safety of
bicyclists be considered when setting speed limits.

Expand Share MI Roads campaign

Our Share MI Roads campaign works to educate
drivers and bicyclists about
co-existing on the road.
Our safety pledge asks
drivers and bicyclists to make
a personal commitment
to keep our roads safe and
offers guidance on avoiding common crashes. Your
support will help expand our outreach efforts. We are
developing an online safety quiz to be utilized by bicyclists,
drivers and drivers education instructors to reinforce share
the road principles in the classroom.

Distribute bicycle-safety literature

LMB annually distributes
more than 40,000 copies of our What Every
Michigan Bicyclist Must
Know and What Every
Young Michigan Bicyclist
Must Know booklets. This
provides bicycle safety
information to bike clubs,
shops, event organizers,
law enforcement and individual bicyclists across the
state. Since 2003, LMB has distributed nearly 400,000
copies of these award-winning booklets. They explain
the rights and responsibilities of bicyclists. Your support
makes these valuable resources possible.

Promote Michigan bicycling

2016 marks the 32nd year
LMB will distribute the
Michigan Ride Calendar
a comprehensive listing
of our states cycling
events. Since 1984, the
publication has been a
go-to resource for bicycle
enthusiasts from across
Michigan and beyond.
These events play an essential role in Michigans
economy. A new report by the Michigan Department
of Transportation finds that bicycling provides an
estimated $668 million per year in economic benefit to
the states economy. The Michigan Ride Calendar is just
one of many ways LMB actively promotes Michigan
cycling.
On behalf of the LMB board and staff, thank you for supporting our efforts to make Michigan a more bicyclefriendly state!

Together we are
Making Michigan Bicycling Better!
