ChoiceofBearings
Bridgebearingsaredevicesfortransferringloadsandmovementsfromthedecktothesubstructure
andfoundations.
Inhighwaybridgebearingsmovementsareaccommodatedbythebasicmechanismsofinternal
deformation(elastomeric),sliding(PTFE),orrolling.Alargevarietyofbearingshaveevolvedusing
variouscombinationsofthesemechanisms.

DesignConsiderations
Thefunctionsofeachbearingtypeare:
a. Elastomeric
Theelastomericbearingallowsthedecktotranslateandrotate,butalsoresistsloadsinthe
longitudinal,transverseandverticaldirections.Loadsaredeveloped,andmovementis

b. PlaneSliding
Slidingbearingsusuallyconsistofalowfrictionpolymer,polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE),

longitudinalortransversedirectionsandonlyresistsloadsintheverticaldirection.Longitudinal
ortransverseloadscanbeaccommodatedbyprovidingmechanicalkeys.Thekeysresist

c. Roller
Largelongitudinalmovementscanbeaccommodatedbythesebearings,butverticalloadsonly
