someofthecommondoubtsofanelectronicsbeginner.Dontworry,hereCGwillguideyouwith
thebasicconceptsandworkingofrelays..!Relayswereinventedin1835byanAmerican
scientistJosephHenry.Youcanturnonlargerelectricalmachinesandelectricalappliancesby
sensorcurrentswiththehelpofrelays.Whentherelaycoilisenergizedbyasmallcurrent,the
coilwillattractacommoncontacttoanothercontactmakingthecircuitclosed.
Relayhaswidevarietiesofapplicationsindifferentindustries.Wehavediscussedmanycircuit
applicationsmakinguseofrelaylikeautomaticwatertanklevelcontrollerandclapswitchusing
555timer.

WhatisRelay?

Usuallyarelayisusedinacircuitasamagneticswitchtoturnonasecondcircuit.
Arelayisanelectromagneticswitch,whichisactivatedwhenasmallcurrentispassed
throughitscoil.
Theinterestingfactisthatthissmallcurrentiscapableofturningonasecondarycircuit
whichworksonmuchlargercurrent.

Therearevarietiesofrelayavailableintheelectronicsmarket,eachofthemoperatesat
differentvoltages.
Whenyouconstructyourowncircuityoumustconsiderthevoltageratingsthatwill
energize(trigger)it.

Whyweneedarelay?UseofaRelay

Whyrelaysareusefultous?Asthenameindicates,manysensorsareextremelysensitive
typeofelectroniccomponentsandproduceonlysmalloutputcurrents.Butweneedtodrive
biggerelectricalmachinesusingthosesensors!Relays,makesitpossibleforsmallcurrentsto
triggerbiggercurrentcircuits.

Whatisinsideofarelay?

Theimportantpartofarelayisthecoil.Thiscoilmakestherelayasanelectromagnetic
switch.
Whatisanelectromagnet?WearefamiliarwiththetermElectroMagneti.e.anycurrent
carryingconductorthatinducesamagneticfield.
Iftheconductoriscoveredaroundanironcore,theironcorebecomesmagnetized.Thisis
calledanelectromagnet.
Thesameprincipleisappliedinrelaystoo.Whenacurrentpassesviatherelaycoil,an
electromagnetissetupwhichpullsoneswitchcontactawayfromanother.

AnordinaryrelayhastwocontactscalledNormallyOpen(NO)andNormallyClosed(NC)
contacts.WecanswitchthecommonterminaltoNCorNO.Pleaselookattheworkinganimation

Normallyrelaysaredrivenbyrelaydrivers.Whatisarelaydriver?Itisnothingbuta
transistor.
Readfurther:Relaydrivercircuitusingtransistor
Thistransistoristurnedonbysomesensors.
Whenthistransistorisactivated,itfeedscurrenttoanelectromagnetthatpullsametal
switchclosedandactivatesthesecondhighcurrent.
Therelativelysmallcurrentintheinputdrivercircuitactivatesthesuperiorcurrentinthe
outputcircuit.

Youcouldusesomekindofelectroniclightsensorcircuit(LDR)tosensedarkorlight
conditions,butLDRproducesonlysmallresistancevariationsaccordingtolightintensity.
YoucouldconnecttheLDRcircuittotheinputcircuitofarelayviarelaydriver.
Whenasmallcurrentfromsensorflowthroughthiscircuit,therelaywillactivateitsoutput
circuit,allowingamuchbiggercurrenttoflow.ThusturningONtheelectricalbulb.
