Q: What are Rudraksha beads? Where are they available?
A: Botanically known as Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb., the Rudraksha beads are the seeds of the
Rudraksha fruit from Rudraksha trees. Rudraksha trees are found mainly in South Eastern Asian
Islands of modern day Indonesia and parts of Kingdom of Nepal. Around 70% of the Rudraksha
trees are found in Indonesia, 25% in Nepal and 5% in India. The Rudraksha beads have lines and

Q: What is the life of a Rudraksha bead? Can ladies and Non Hindus wear Rudraksha?
A: The life of Rudraksha beads is very long. If well protected, they can be passed on for

A: The nature and essence of rudraksha is hot so some people cannot wear it. Their skin show
signs of allergy. In such cases, the Rudraksha beads may be kept in the pooja room and daily
prayers should be offered to them.
Q: What precautions should be taken while wearing the Rudraksha beads?
A: The following precautions should be followed : Ancient Puranas recommend taking bath with
Rudraksha on the body. However, Rudraksha should be protected from the action of soap and
talcum powder that dehydrate and clog the pores.
Rudraksha may be worn on a regular basis. However, ladies should take off Rudraksha during
menstrual cycle. Rudraksha should not be worn when going to a funeral. It is recommended that
the mala should be taken off at night before sleep and worn again in the morning after bath.
Beads should be cleaned by dipping them into warm water overnight. Then scrub then with soft
bristle brush, wash again and let them dry. Then apply sandalwood oil. The beads should be
purified by offering incense, sandalwood paste and chanting the seed mantra of that Mukhi.

Astrologically it is said to treat the malefic effects of Sun. Both Mukhis have the power to treat

Two Mukhi Rudrakasha is ruled by the planet Moon. This Rudraksha symbolizes the

Rudraksha is a seed (fruit) covered with pulp and green skin which turns a blue black in time
after plucked from the tree. Rudraksha beads are generally round in shape, up to one inch
in diameter, and can have from one face Rudraksha to twenty-one faces Rudraksha, like facets of
a cut gem.The Rudraksha bead tree is considered the tear drop that fell from Lord Shiva.
Rudraksha (seeds) are found that are grown together in various formations. Each seed has a
naturally occurring hole in the center from the fruit itself. It is also believed that wearing the
rudraksha distracts the evil eye, it brings luck.

Rudraksha is a divine bead and it bestows all sorts of Spiritual, Mental & Physical benefits to its

* Then the mind is cleared of all negative thoughts so as to achieve a clear & positive mind
frame.
* A Matt is placed on the Floor in such a way that the face is towards East, North or North-East
while performing the Pran Pratishtha Puja of the Holy Rudraksha Bead.

* The Rudraksha is opened and washed with Unboiled Milk and Holy Water. After that

Emerald occupies an important place in many mythologies; according to the Bible, it was
believed that when Lucifer was cast out of Paradise an emerald fell from his forehead, from
which formed the Holy Grail. The ancients also believed that the Greek god Hermes recorded the

Coral or Prabal, Moonga

To still tempests and traverse broad rivers in safety was the privilege of one who bore either red
or white coral with him. That this also stanched the flow of blood from a wound, cured madness,

and gave wisdom, was said to have been experimentally proved. It increases blood and maintains

Coral or Moonga, which for twenty centuries or more was classed among the precious stones, to
retain its power as an amulet, must not have been worked, and in Italy only such pieces are
valued for this purpose as have been freshly gathered from the sea or have been cast up by the
sea on the shore. To exercise all its power against spells, or enchantments, coral must be worn
where its brilliant color makes it conspicuous.

Pearl or Basra Moti

In Early Chinese myths, pearls or Moti were thought to fall from the sky when dragons fought.
Ancient Greek legends say that pearls were thought to be the tears of the gods. When the goddess
of love was born from the sea, she shook from her eyes hardened tears of joy, pearls.
Greeks believed that wearing pearls or Moti would promote marital bliss and prevent newlywed
women from crying. To different cultures pearls have symbolized modesty, chastity, power, and
courage. Cultured or freshwater pearls are considered to offer the power of love, money,
protection, and luck. Pearls are also thought to give wisdom through experience, to quicken the
laws of karma and to cement engagements and love relationships.

The ruby or chuni has many names in Sanskrit, some of them clearly showing that it was more
valued as a gem by the Hindus than any other
The possession of a Padmaraga, or Burmese ruby, conferred perfect safety upon the owner, and
as long as he owned this precious stone he could dwell without fear in the midst of enemies and
was shielded from adverse fortune. Here the fortunate owner of a brilliant ruby is assured that he
will live in peace and concord with all men, that neither his land nor his rank will be taken from
him, and that he will be preserved from all perils. The stone would also guard his house, his fruittrees, and his vineyards from injury by tempests. All the good effects were most surely secured if
the ruby, set in ring, bracelet, or brooch, were worn on the left side.
The gorgeous ruby or manik, the favorite gem of Burma, where the finest specimens are found, is
not only valued for its beauty, but is also believed to confer invulnerability. To attain this end,
however, it is not thought to be sufficient to wear these stones in a ring or other piece of jewelry,
but the stone must be inserted in the flesh, and thus become, so to speak, a part of its owners
body. Those who in this way bear about with them a ruby, confidently believe that they cannot be
