(b) the interquartile range.

(c) The company director decides that any employees whose scores are so low that they are
outliers will undergo retraining. An outlier is an observation whose value is less than the
lower quartile minus 1.5 times the interquartile range.
Determine the number of employee(s) who will undergo retraining.

3.The number of customers entering a shop per minute follows a Poisson distribution with
mean 1.2. It is given that the probability that a customer entering the shop is female is 0.6.

(a) If 4 customers enter the shop in 1 minute, find the probability that exactly 2 of them
are female customers.

(b) Show that the probability that 4 customers enter the shop in 1 minute, and the numbers of
male customers and female customers are different is 0.017 0 (correct to three significant
figures).

receive.

5.A pharmaceutical company claimed that a course of its vitamin tablets would improve
examination performance. To publicise its claim, the company offered to provide the tablets
free to candidates taking a particular STPM examination. This offer was taken up by some
but not all of the candidates . The average mark in the examination for all candidates from
those who did not take the course or vitamin tablets was 42 and with a standard deviation of
12.8.
A random sample of 120 candidates from those who had taken the course of vitamin tablets
gave a mean mark of 43.8

(a) Why was it not necessary to know that the examination marks were normally distributed
before carrying out the test ? Determine the distribution of the sample mean.

(b) Test the pharmaceutical companys claim , at the 5% significance level.[6 marks]
