Fillies lose

The Harrison County Fillies softball team saw their bats
fall silent over the last two games, dropping a 14-0 decision
to top-10 ranked Montgomery County on Monday and a 11-0
loss to 38th District foe Nicholas County on Tuesday.
The loss to Nicholas County was particularly damaging
as the Lady Jackets will now secure the top seed in the
three-team 38th District Tournament, which will be played
at Harrison County, assuring them of a berth in the 10th
Region Tournament in three weeks.

Jenkins

While Jerry Jenkins was playing baseball at
Transylvania from 1958 to 1962, compliments from
coaches and staff were non-existent. So, when
Jenkins was inducted into the Pioneer Hall of Fame
April 25, and former athletic director Harry
Stephenson said that Jenkins was one of the best
catchers to ever play for Transy, Jenkins nearly
asked him to repeat himself.
Jenkins went to Transylvania on a baseball schol-
arship. He played all four years. His senior year, the
team went 14-1 and captured the Kentucky
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Jenkins and teammate and best friend Jack Lucas
were the only seniors on that winning 1962 team.
“We didn’t play like they do today,” Jenkins
smiled, noting that aluminum bats were not even
considered.
Jack Wise was the baseball coach during Jenkins’
freshman year. Lee Rose finished up Jenkins’ three
years as head coach.
In addition to the four years Jenkins played base-
ball, he was also a walk-on basketball player for
C.M. Newton’s Pioneers.
“What you remember are the good times ... the
fun,” Jenkins said.
He said he was honored to have received the
induction and pleased that his family could be with
him as he accepted the award during Transylvania’s
Alumni Weekend.
Jenkins credits the education he received at
Transylvania with the successes he had in his
career.
He was a teacher, coach and principal at Harrison
County High School spanning three decades from
the late 60s to the early 80s.

weeks ago, we were shut out at the Donnie Carnes
Invitational. The 47 points we scored shows we are
an improving team.”
Catherine Darnell earned Harrison County’s lone
first place finish, taking the high jump with a per-
sonal best effort of 5-feet. Also in the high jump,
Harley Cunningham made her debut in the event
and took third place with a height of 4-feet, 8-inch-
es.
In other field events, Cunningham was sixth in
both the triple jump (25-feet, 1/2 inch) and the long
jump (12-feet, 8-inches). Swanice Holman was fourth
in the discus with a throw of 66-feet, 7-inches.
On the track, the 3200 meter relay team of Rachel
Thornberry, Katelyn Groom, Kelsey Carr and Mariah
Carr was third with a personal best of 12:23.6. The
1600 meter relay of Ashley Bradford, Thornberry,
Groom and Darnell was third as well, again estab-
lishing a personal best time of 2:02.2.
Megan Potter was third in the 100 meter hurdles
with a time of 19.09 seconds and Danni Kemplin was
fourth in 19.02.
Simpson has liked what he has seen so far with two
weeks remaining before the regional meet in
Lexington.
“Several of our young athletes are making bigger
contributions right now. As the girls become more
focused on the team, we grow stronger. We still have
a long way to go, but I’m impressed with our develop-
ment.”
With only one first place finish themselves, the
Harrison County Thorobred’s depth allowed them to
challenge Anderson County for the team title before
settling for a second place finish.
The Breds scored valuable points in 15 of the 17
events, with several events accounting for more than
one athlete scoring.
The 3200 meter relay team of Hank Whalen, John
Michael Reitz, Mark Schimpler and Ryan Puckett
won its grueling event with a time of 9:06.7 to earn
the only first place finish for the Breds.
Puckett led the way individually for the Breds by
taking second place in three other events, either
individually or on a relay team. He was second in
both the 1600 meter run (4:36) and the 3200 meter run
(10:43) as well as the 1600 meter relay along with
teammates Spencer Aubrey, Adam Fischer and Eric
Lewis in 3:57.95.
Harrison County scored multiple points in three
of the five field events. Bryant Warmouth, Brett
Perkins and Lewis finished third, fourth and sixth,
respectively in the long jump. Corey Bailey and
Brandon Barnett were fourth and fifth, respectively
in the discus. Austin Lucas and T.J. Moore took
fourth and fifth in the shot put. Stevie Neal was fifth
in the high jump, and Lewis was third in the triple
jump.
In the other running events, Caleb Reeder was
third and Warmouth fourth in the 110 meter hurdles,
Warmouth was second, Fischer third and Perkins
fifth in the 300 meter hurdles. Schimpler was third in
the 800 meter run and the 400 meter relay team of
Reeder, Aaron Newby, Van Isaac and Warmouth was
fourth overall with a time of :59.32.
“We had a lot of different guys score in a lot of
events, which is a good thing to see,” said Thorobreds
coach Robert Walker. “We just need to continue to
improve individually in every event.”
Walker and Simpson were both very complimen-
tary of how well run the meet was run.
“Coach Walker and I would like to thank our boost-
ers, parents and many volunteers who helped at the
Invitational,” said Simpson. “The meet was well run
and a great success. We couldn’t have done it without
everyone’s help.”

tournament began early on Saturday morn-
ing with a five-team field and ended with-
out a champion being decided.
Harrison County knocked off
Williamstown in their first game of the
tournament and defeated West Carter in
the finals of the winner’s bracket on
Saturday afternoon.
The Fillies then hooked up with long-
time rival Bourbon County in the champi-
onship game on Saturday night.
Harrison County scored a pair of runs
early in the game, but saw Bourbon County
come back in the top of the sixth inning,
scoring twice to tie the game. Bourbon
County actually scored a go-ahead run in
the inning, but an injury to Fillies third-
baseman Charley Hatfield, eventually led
both teams to agree to end the game prema-
turely.
On a foul bunt attempt down the third
base line, Hatfield made an unsuccessful
diving attempt to make the play. Her team-
mate, catcher Lorraine Dennie, retrieved
the ball and threw it back to pitcher Megan
Bullock. Her throw, however, accidently
struck Hatfield in the back of the head. She
was taken via ambulance to Harrison
Memorial Hospital where tests were con-
ducted. She was released that evening to go
home.
There is no word yet on how long Hatfield
will be out of action.
Harrison County hosts Pendleton County
this afternoon in a preview of the 38th
District first-round match-up, with the var-
sity game set to begin at 5:30. Tomorrow
night, the Fillies will host Tates Creek, and
on Saturday will travel to Henry County for
a 1 p.m. game.
