Tampa Bay’s New World-Class Recording Facility Opens!

There’s nothing on the planet quite like Clear Track Productions, the newly open
ed 4,000 sq. ft. world-class recording facility located in the heart of tropical
Clearwater, Florida, just across the bay from Tampa. The project began a year a
nd a half ago, fueled by the dreams of young, passionate musician and recording
engineer, Mr. Mike Johnson. His purpose? To create an ideal studio environment,
built from the ground up, with the right equipment and acoustics to perfectly ca
pture sound.
Working with renowned studio designer Wes Lachot of Wes Lachot Design, plans wer
e made for a harmonious, natural and comfortable studio A with an acoustic desig
n to match no others. For example, a wide sweet spot in the control room extends
from the engineer’s seat at the SSL 8056G+ console all the way back to the clie
nt couch. This allows both the client and engineer to save the time and frustrat
ion of making multiple “guess mixes”. This efficiency is achieved by side wall d
iffsorber trapping and an array of RPG Diffractal diffusors, giving the control
room the industry standard ±3dB variance throughout its frequency range.
A valuable feature at Clear Track Productions is a recent piece of equipment cal
led CLASP, by Endless Analog. This allows you to simultaneously record to tape
while CLASP imports the audio into Pro Tools with no latency. This achieves the
desired sound of analog tape with the convenience of Pro Tools. Thanks to this,
the studio doesn’t have to charge clients for multiple reels of tape; it s now a
re-usable medium.
Recorders include Pro Tools HD3 as well as Studer A827 2" 24-track and Ampex ATR
-102 1/2" 2- track machines. An excellent array of outboard gear, including Neve
, API, Calrec, GML, Lexicon, Bricasti, Eventide, TC, etc. more than satisfies cl
ients. Dynaudio M3As, Chord SPA1032 amplifier, and Avalon crossovers make up the
active main monitor system. Impressive yet relaxing, Studio A’s control room is
the ideal space to record and mix sound.
Past a wall of guitars is the 700 sq. ft. live room, home to a 6’-11” Yamaha C-6
grand piano. Shades of light blue-gold acoustic panels line the walls in a neat
, puzzle-like formation, giving the room a neutral sound so any instrument or vo
ice will reproduce truly in the recording. With a unique array of absorbers and
RPG diffusors on the sidewalls, extensive bass trappings and a set of four large
custom gobos (two with vision glass), this live room exceeds most standards. A
large, diffusive Iso-booth and a smaller, more absorptive booth each face the co
ntrol room and live room, allowing band members to feel more connected while rec
ording.
Studio A’s comfortable private lounge offers clients a tropical, relaxing space
of their own, complete with a kitchenette and entertainment center. The same car
e that went into building the perfect studio environment is also shown in workin
g with our artists. Creativity flows naturally in this studio, so clients can fe
el they’re in the right hands as soon as they step through the oak doors. Our ta
lented production team, headed by Spencer Bradham, with Head Engineer Mike Johns
on, work to enhance the artist’s own style and sound, mutually working to achiev
e the exact artistic expression desired.
