Read-Aloud: The Lorax by Dr. Seuss

Objective:
Students will be able to make and share their predictions during the read aloud.
Students will be able to make and share connections with the book.
Students will be able to think about their role in protecting the earth.

Materials:
The Lorax by Dr. Seuss
Think Pair Share Sheet
Pens or pencils

Procedure:
1. Pass out the Think Pair Share Sheet and have students write their name on it.
2. Read aloud the book until page 9. Then stop and have students write on their sheet
about what they think the Lorax is and what they think happened to him.
3. Share in partners and then take volunteers as a whole class.
4. Continue to read aloud until page 23. Stop and ask students What do you predict
the Once-ler will do with those trees?
5. Share in partners and then have volunteers share as a whole class.
6. Continue to read aloud until page 27. Stop and ask students How does the authors
description of the Lorax help you understand the story? What do you predict the
problem will be?
7. Share in partners and then have volunteers share as a whole class.
8. Continue to read aloud until page 43. Stop and ask students Should the Once-ler
feel guilty for what he has done? Why or why not?
9. Share in partners and then have volunteers share as a whole class. Encourage
different students to share.
10. Continue to read aloud until page 53. Have students write about whether or not
they think the Once-ler will stop now and if they would if they were in his place.
11. Share in partners and then have volunteers share as a whole class.
12. Continue to read aloud until page 63. Ask students What do you think UNLESS
means?
13. Have students share with their partner and then as a class.
14. Finish the book and then on the bottom of the sheet, have students answer the
question What can you do to make the earth a better place? individually.
15. Collect the sheets.

Evaluation:

Look over student writing and write comments and feedback for the students
Grade students based on participation in the individual writing, group sharing, class
sharing, and final wrap up question (5pts each)
