Effects of Technology to Children

Introduction
What is technology :
Technology (from Greek, techne, "art, skill, cunning of hand"; and logia) is the collection of
techniques, skills, methods and processes used in the production of goods or services or in the
accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific investigation.
Technological development:
Technological development effects the child growth greatly both in positive and negative
manner depending on what type of technology used and to what extend it is being used .

advantages of technology
-

Helps the childrens brain growth to be more efficient

1. Makes their brain to be focused and imaginative by strengthening the ability to
scan information quickly
Games which makes children to think and act faster
It develops and improves attention ability , reaction time
Keeps them up to date
1. Social media and other online resources share useful information and help the
children to be up to date.
Makes learning easy
1. Many internet sites provide learning material for free
Helps children to gain knowledge easily
Learning process become fun with videos and online tutorials

disadvantages of technology
-

Childrens exposure to real world become limited

1. Children are no longer involve in physical sports and tend to have lower exposure
to the natural
Causes child obesity ( due to lack of physical activities)
Health related issues ( coordination disorder, developmental delays, anxiety ,
depression )
Academics led by Dr Gavin Sandercock, a children's fitness expert at Essex
University, studied how strong a group of 315 Essex 10-year-olds in 2008 were
compared with 309 children the same age in 1998. They found that:

The number of sit-ups 10-year-olds can do declined by 27.1% between 1998 and
2008
Arm strength fell by 26% and grip strength by 7%
While one in 20 children in 1998 could not hold their own weight when hanging
from wall bars, one in 10 could not do so in 2008.
"This is probably due to changes in activity patterns among English 10-year-olds,
such as taking part in fewer activities like rope-climbing in PE and tree-climbing for
fun," Sandercock said. "Typically, these activities boosted children's strength, making
them able to lift and hold their own bodyweight."

2. Children are highly exposed to entertainment technology (e.g: television ,
smartphones, tablet pc)
This limits their time with friends and family
Limits their creativity and imagination
According to a study by Common Sense Media in 2013, the total average screen time for
children ages 0-8 years is just under two hours a day. Traditional screen time in front of a
TV is still the preferred form of screen time, but not surprisingly, mobile screen time is up.
According to the study, 38% of children under two have used a mobile device.

Solution
-

Parental guidance
1. Must monitor their children on technological usage
2. Guide them to use technology wisely
Limit usage time
Set parental control during internet usage
Monitor their usage frequently
3. Must give exposure to their children negative effects of technology
4. Help them to organize childrens time
Include physical activities such as participation in sports
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommended just that in a policy statement
issued last fall. They suggest parents control the quantity (less than an hour or
two a day of screen time) and content of various media their children consume,
keep gadgets out of kids bedrooms, and model appropriate behavior by limiting
their own technology use. (This last one may perhaps be more important than
most parents wish to acknowledge.)

Government and schools

1. Entertainment technology must be filtered thoroughly
2. Children education must include proper way of using technology
Schools must improve the usage of technological gadgets as learning aid for
children

Conclusion
Technology has both positive and negative effect to children. Children must be guided to
utilise technology to obtain maximum positive effect and minimize negative effects.
