13.1 Cristo Rey / El Cubilete

a 86.
As se

CONTENTS
1.1 General information
This State Capital City originally goes back to the discovery of rich silver mines,
which since the XVI century invigorated the development of a unique and unimaginable
settlement. The harsh topography where this village was founded allowed the
establishment of one of the most wonderful cities of the new world.
This city, World Cultural Heritage has beautiful temples, plazas and palaces, all
provided by the generous viceroyalty.
Its easy to understand why this destination is considered one of the most visited by
both national and international tourists. Guanajuato seems to enjoy the astonishment
aroused by the busy underground street, never seen one likely in the world. You will never
forget the richness of its baroque style altarpieces and the beautiful landscapes which are
perfect scenarios for weddings and inspiration for many romantic legends such as La
Leyenda del Callejn del beso (The Legend of the Alley of the Kiss).
1.2 Weather
Guanajuato is 2000 meters above sea level and has nice and warm weather. From
March to June we can find warm or hot days, with an average temperature of 36F; on the
other side, July and September have mostly rainy days.

13.1 Cristo Rey / El Cubilete
This sanctuary was build on top of Cerro el Cubilete, 2,579 meters above sea level. Due
to its relevance it is considered a geographic main point in our country. Originally was
home of the Cristo Rey statue, smaller in size, it was bombed from an aircraft and
destroyed during the most critical period of the so called Cristera War, which was the last
period of the Mexican Revolution. The building is now base of the gigantic Cristo Rey statue
and proudly shows its greatness in the entire country.
13.2 Templo de la Compaa de Jess
This temple was built by the Compaa de Jess congregation and is one of the main
Jesuit churches in New Spain. Its construction began in 1746 and was finalized in 1765.

14 TOURS
14.1 Callejoneada con Estudiantina
Callejonear means to walk among the streets and alleys of the City of Guanajuato, it is a
custom that became a tradition in recent days with the estudiantinas or student music
groups.
14.2 Museo de las Momias
For many years San Sebastian was considered the main cemetery of the city, apart from
San Cayetanos and San Agustin, this last one is exclusively of foreigner property. In order to
provide the state of Guanajuato with a cemetery according with its needs and the
increase population of the city, made the municipal government ask for permission on
august 30, 1853 to build on the south part of the Trozado mountain a bigger and well
conditioned cemetery, these constructions were finished until the beginning of 1861. Due
to its location and topography this cemetery has the significant and curious property of
corpses conservation, mummifying them. It is said that the first mummy was exhumed from
number 214 of the first serial and the body buried on June 19 of 1865.
Since 1870 the mummies began to be placed in an administration room and tourists
started visiting them until 1894. Not all the corpses are able to mummify, even if they were
buried in continuous lots, people who worked at the cemetery noticed that the corpses
covered with charcoal and lime were the ones who mummified best, and the ones that
were buried in zinc boxes were only conserved about ten years. Until December 31 of 1907,
the number of exhumed mummies was about 86.
There are mummies with characteristic physical gestures denoting a horrible awaking and
desperation after being buried alive in a narrow grave. But most cases are followed by a
marked sign of serenity after the real death, without any trace of suffering. The childrens
mummies are among this kind, which give you the impression of dolls with no particular
interest in anything at all.
14.3 Presa de la Olla
Due to the water shortage suffered in Guanajuato, it was determined in 1741to build dam
in order to satisfy the water needs of its population. The dam, even unfinished, captured
water for the first time in 1747 and kept providing water to its surrounding neighbors until
the new dam of Esperanza began service in 1894. The Presa de la Olla and its
surroundings are one of the more attractive landmarks nowadays.
