SUCCESS IN AN ONLINE MATH COURSE

It is not easier to take a math class online! If you were enrolled in a traditional faceto-face meeting MAT082 class, we would meet together 3 hours in the classroom
each week. It is expected that students need to put in approximately two hours of
study time for each hour spent in the classroom. This adds up to nine hours per week
so you need to plan on approximately 13 hours per week for this online class. We
study the same math content as if we were meeting together in the traditional
classroom.
The good news: you will be saving time that you would normally spend commuting to
campus and you can work on learning the course material anytime of the day or
night!
The following suggestions will help you be successful in MAT102
Success in Math Classes
You are expected to watch video lessons and example problems, read the
textbook, take notes, keep an organized notebook, and practice what you learn
by completing assignments. This course will require you to manage your time
well and dedicate yourself to learning the concepts. If you need help it is up to
you to seek tutoring.

The main form of communication from me will be through e-mails posted sent
through your e-mail addresses and in the MathAS
(https://mathas.pvc.maricopa.edu) homework system. You are responsible
reading all of the e-mails.

Allow yourself plenty of time to work on homework and quizzesbefore the

due date. This will allow you to take advantage of unlimited opportunities to
get all homework questions correct, to earn the best Module Exam grade
possible (you get three tries on each testthe highest grade is used in your
score), once the due date passesno further tries for a higher score are
allowed.

Statement of Technology Use

All homework and Module tests will be completed online. Students enrolled
in this course will use current technology in order to meet the requirements of
this course. The use of technology includes computers, learning management
system, content specific software, technology based instructional tools, and
other technology resources. The use of technology provides a flexible delivery
method to students and enhances the learning of mathematics. Students will
be required to use MathAS (https://mathas.pvc.maricopa.edu) online
homework, web browsers, manage emails, and a variety of online learning
tools. You will be required to have an email account for this class and to check
it regularly. The computer lab and class computers may only be used for
schoolwork, no other recreational websites may be viewed while in the lab (i.e.
Twitter, Facebook).

You will be required to gain access to MathAS

(https://mathas.pvc.maricopa.edu) to complete all course work. This is
where all of the math assignments will be located. There is no cost for
this access.

You must also have a valid email for this course. You can use any email address
you already use or the Gmail account through Phoenix College that all students
have. Please visit http://google.maricopa.edu or view this video if you need
help to activate this email account.
http://www.pc.maricopa.edu/legalstudies/gmail/gmailsw/gmailsw/gmai
lsw.html

You are responsible for reading all the emails that I send you. You are also
responsible for maintaining your own computer, email account and Internet
Service Provider account.

A calculator is required for this courseeither a scientific or graphing calculator

may be used. A set of headphones is also required for this course. These can
be purchased in the bookstore. A limited number of graphing calculators are
available for rental from the PC Math Department(room A230) for
$15/semester. To rent one, take a blue slip to the Cashiers and pay $15, then
take your receipt to A-230 (Math Dept. Office) to pick up your calculator. NO
calculators on your cell phones or sharing of calculators!!

Phoenix College campus has computer facilities in the following locations: (Be
sure to bring your own headphones)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
HOMEWORK:

The only way to learn mathematics is through practice.

Homework counts for 100 points (20%) of your semester grade.

If you get a homework problem wrong you are allowed to redo it. If you
miss a question twice, you can work a similar problem for full credit. Homework
problems have an unlimited number of attempts per question. This means you
can and should get 100% on every homework assignment.

It is important to spend time learning the concepts before you start the
homework. You should read the textbook and watch the video lessons that
have been created for the course before you start your homework.

Each chapter has an optional practice test. This does not count as part of your
grade, but serves as a review to assess your understanding of the major topics.
You should work on this prior to each test.

Each Homework assignment has a due date on the calendar. It is important to

complete all assignments by the due date. You can complete homework up to 3
days late if you submit a late pass BEFORE the due date. After you use the 5
last passes, you cannot submit work late. You submit a late pass by clicking the

late pass link next to the assignment or test. The link is not visible after the
due date.

Keep an organized notebook of your notes, homework, and test work. Your
notebook is a valuable resource for the course. Putting effort into an organized
and detailed notebook is well worth the time.

You can always review the correct answers to a homework assignment within
each question or through your online grade book.
Quizzes

There are 7 Online Module Quizzes. All tests are timed. Most tests have a two hour
time limit. Once you open a test, you must complete it. When you close the test, you
are locked out of the test.

The combined score for all chapter quizzes accounts for 200 points (30%)of your final
grade.

You may not consult another person for assistance during the Module Tests.

Do the following before you take the Chapter quizzes:

o Complete all Required Homework.
o

Take the Optional Practice Test under Homework.

Each test has two attempts for each question. If the question is wrong the second
time, the entire question is marked wrong and you will receive zero points for that
question. No help options are available during the test.

Each Test has a due date on the calendar. You can complete a test at the next class
meeting if you submit a late pass BEFORE the due date. After you use the 5 late
passes, you cannot submit work late. You submit a late pass by clicking the late-pass
link next to the assignment or test. The link is not visible after the due date.

You can view your answers and the correct answers to each test though your online
grade book.

TESTING:
There will be Two proctored Exams.
The first exam is a proctored midterm covering Chapters 1-4 the exam is
worth 150 points (25%) of your final score.
You will be allowed 5(five) 3 x 5 index cards to bring with notes to the
midterm exam.
Exam must be taken in the Phoenix College Testing Center (or an equivalent
approved Testing Center).
PROCTORED CUMULATIVE FINAL EXAM

If you do not pass the final exam with a 70% or better, you do not pass
the class.
There is a cumulative Final Exam which is proctored. It is your responsibility
to arrange for proctoring if you cannot take it at the PC Testing Center. The
Final Exam must be completed by Wednesday, May 13, at 6:00pm.
Proctored Exams can be taken in the following way:
o PC testing Center by appointment only No fee
o Another Community College- pre- approved by me. You need to send
name of testing center, phone number, email , and location. You will
have to pay a $25-$35 fee per exam depending on site

o PROCTORU.com -- You have to have webcam on your computer to use

this option, it must be approved by me and it is $25 per Exam.
o Other arrangements made exclusively with me and documented.
Proctored exams must be done with a third party supervison. Cannot
take exam alone at home unless using Proctor U. Someone has to watch
